View Full Version : Shocks host Braves this weekend

I took a little break from live WSU sporting events until this past weekend. Sweet 16 extended basketball season and took me awhile to recover.

This series will definitely be one to watch. Not only for what goes on between the lines, but I always get a kick out of watching Dewey Kalmer's antics.

I believe that the last time he and the Braves were here, half of the BU coaching staff got tossed for arguing (rightfully so) a non-call on a swinging 3rd strike to Brandon Green during the second game of the Saturday doubleheader. The poor umpire lost count of balls and strikes, and his ineptness gave Green and the Shockers new life.

After 15 minutes of heated argument, in which Dewey and the Braves pitching coach got tossed, all while Green patiently stands by waiting, play is resumed. Brandon lines a double down the RF line, igniting another comeback by the Shockers.

Not saying what the ump did was right, Braves fans. Too bad you were vicitimized by this. It was not deliberate, he just blew it. Umps do this on occasion. The series of events was fun to watch. Probably more fun since the Shocks won the ball game.

There's never a dull moment when Dewey's in the house.

It should be a great weekend of baseball.

Another first place team comes into town. Hopefully we will have some nice weather and huge crowds.:valley: :shockers:

2-time defending MVC Pitcher of the Week Brandon Magee should be on the hill for Game 1. No doubt about it; we need to win that first one....

Freshman Aaron Shafer with a 7-1 record and a 1.80 ERA will be on the bump on Sunday. It should be a great series indeed.

Should be some great pitching duels this weekend.

I hope the home team brings out the brooms; we need to get back into the title race and a sweep would be great. WSU hitting is an adventure lately and I'm hoping for the best. I think Bradley will be tough and expect great battles. :shockers: :valley:

I was looking at Aaron Shafer's stats over his 4 MVC starts and they are freaking ridiculous:

- He is 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA
- He has 22 K's and 5 BB's in 29 Innings.
- Opponents are hitting just .160 against him in MVC games.

Impressive indeed. What year is Mr. Magee?

Magee is a senior, as is Walker. Our #3 starter, Collin Brennan, however is a freshman and has not lost a game on the year. He should be the one facing Aaron Shafer on Sunday.

As I said earlier, some really nice pitching duels this weekend.

I hope the Shocker bats react like they did this past weekend.:shockers:

I don't think Mr. Magee's numbers will look quite so impressive after tonight.

I think the Shox played their best game of the year. Let's keep it up and go for another win on Saturday!:valley: :shockers:

After trailing 12-3, WSU wins 19-12. Damon Sublett hits two home runs including a grand slam.

Dewey has to really be scratching his head after this one. We've ripped just about any pitcher he has trotted out there so far this weekend.

I wonder why he pulled his starter so early. We were hitting him pretty well too, but he kept us at bay for the most part, leaving with an 11-3 lead. At least Dewey doesn't overdo it on the pitch counts.

After Sublette's second round-tripper, he came up again in the bottom of the 8th. The reliever, I think Porter was his name, plunked him with a lame off-speed pitch. Probably should have been tossed.

Amazing how we came from close to being run-ruled to damn near being the run-ruler.

It was one of the strangest games I have ever watched, but it was very sweet in the end.

I had a feeling all along we were going to come back.

Even after giving up 9 runs in the first two innings I kept thinking we were going to settle down and stop them and start scoring runs ourselves.

Boy did we!

I kept nudging my wife, told her it's early after BU's 4-run first inning.

Wow, mad props to WSU on the comeback. Going from being close to being mercy ruled to winning 'comfortably' by 7. Hate to see the BU ERAs after this series is over. 30 runs already-although how many earned?

Well, we can't all play the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Congratulations to the Shockers on one hell of a performance thus far. I really did believe for a second there that our pitchers were legit....

The Shox scored one unearned run yesterday and one unearned run today. Everything else has been earned.

BU had 4 unearned runs today, as the Shox made FOUR ERRORS (BU only made one error today).

Game 3

Shocks 5
Bradley 3

Josh Workman hits a dramatic 2-run walk-off HR in the 9th inning. Dewey leaves frustrated again.

Twice in the late innings, the Shocks tie the game up on 2 out RBI hits, setting the stage for Josh's heroics.

As Josh came up to bat, I was thinking......If I'm Dewey, would I want to pitch to the all-time Kansas high school HR leader? Or would I want to pitch to Damon Sublett (who was on-deck at the time)?

What a dilemma.......:fear:

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I was thinking about their announcer, John Sterling, as Josh hit the ball.......

"IT IS HIGH.......!
IT IS FAR......!
IT IS GONE......!"

Kennedy called it pretty well, but he didn't sound convinced that it was leaving the park.

The wind had been playing tricks with the ball all day. I'm sure he didn't know if it was GONE until he could see it was.

I agree. I think Josh hit it into a cross-wind.....most of the time it was blowing more to left.

It seemed like a HR right off the bat to me, but I am sure Mike was being cautious, especially with the way the wind was blowing.:shockers:
