Bears recover from sweep
Missouri State baseball players get day off to regroup from losses in Wichita.
Lyndal Scranton
News-Leader
After a lost weekend in Wichita, Missouri State baseball coach Keith Guttin gave his players Monday off to regroup.
"Son of a gun that sucks," Guttin said of a Missouri Valley Conference sweep at the hands of Wichita State. "Wichita State is just by far the best team in college baseball.”
"There's ample time to do some good, to make our own destiny and contend, but we will probably never be the Shockers." Guttin said with a laugh.
The Bears, who had won nine of 10 before dropping three straight, look to regain the winning form today at Kansas.
Jake Shafer (2-1) looks for his fourth straight quality start. The Missouri State sophomore right-hander pitched six shutout innings in a victory over Arkansas a week ago.
The Bears will be without starting catcher Matt Weglarz until at least the start of a weekend league series with Southern Illinois. The junior is hitting .080 with 1 runs batted in.
Weglarz dislocated and cut a finger Saturday at Wichita State covering third base as the infield rotated on a bunt situation. The cut required stitches and the Bears were without Weglarz in Sunday's 8-7 loss.
"We'll just have to wait and see how long it takes to get the swelling down and flexibility back in his finger," Guttin said.
Sophomore outfielder Nolan Keane was one of the few Bears who were productive at the plate over the weekend. Keane went 5-for-12 with four RBIs against the Shockers and raised his team-best batting average to .365.
Kansas also is coming off a rough weekend, though the Jayhawks did win the final game at Oklahoma State to avoid a sweep.
The Jayhawks are hitting .286 with 43 home runs, compared to Missouri State's .270 average with 19 homers.

Not making fun, he is just stating the facts. MSU will NEVER be WSU. It would take about 26 more postseason appearances, 6 more CWS appearances, 3 CWS title game appearances, oh yeah, and a national championship. On top of that he needs 28 straight 40 win seasons and his own stadium. So, in summation, I think it is safe to say that MSU will never be anything close to what WSU is and has been. Great deductive skills Mr. Guttin, I guess that is what happens when you lose 15 straight to a team.

After a lost weekend in Wichita, Missouri State baseball coach Keith Guttin gave his players Monday off to regroup.

"There's ample time to do some good, to make our own destiny and contend."

Couldn't find the bold word above in a dictionary, so I decided to post the nearest illustration.

3 years ago would be great for the bears if they sustained anything positive from that appearance but have not. You are a complete joke with your pathetic attempt to make the bears out to be a college baseball power they are 19-14 this year or something close to that, they are now 76-71 since the appearance. Where as the Shockers have only missed out on one regional since that CWS 13 years ago and have never won less than 40 games a season. You make an *** out of yourself everytime you type on this subject.

Wow. You go to regionals. So it's like you're the winner of the Patriot League every year. Good for you.
It is truly sad how far OGU's baseball program has fallen.

I guess I should be one of the *smart* ones who finance something that depreciates by 500 dollars per month than fill it up with fuel that costs about .20 cents per mile.
Some of you guys are sooo stupid its pathetic.

Will you be riding your bike to the MVC Tourney this year? It's Saddam's turn to host it right, since they will forever be the host of every tournament WSU wants.
Upon further review, you'd better start riding your bike now. Ride West. To Wichita. For the second year in a row.

You may not have to worry about making the trip if MSU continues the "slide into the abyss" it began last weekend.

Wasn't the only reason they made the tourney field two years ago because they were the host?

There were other reasons. JQH bought it for a year and touted GoSMSGo's circus act as a big attraction that year.

There was also a cheeseburger eating contest on Friday night. Guess who won??
And they also lined up a bunch of girls and picked a local fan out of the stands. He participated in "guess which one of your cousins is your sister?" contest.

My favorite MOST/SMS/swomo/ story was this year on the way to the WSU at most-sms-swomo basketball game.
We asked for directions to the game and we were told to turn right when we saw Hammons field go straight passed Hammons statute and the street will turn into John Q. Hammons Parkway in front of Hammons hotel. Keep going past the Hammons Fine Arts Center and then turn right and you will be at the Hammons Student Center. You can't miss it!
