Ummm... that wouldn't be my first design if I was trying to attract young people to the games. That thing would scare some adults away..

And some think WUShock frightens little kids. At least WU's teeth (all the better to eat you with) don't show. The fangs would scare most under 6. Wu is just strange looking, this guy is SCARY.

Not so fast Shockers!!!! Your mascot also made the list at number 6....

I wouldn't being saying much about attracting young people to games with a mascot if I were a Shocker fan.

Plus you guys made the not hot mascot list as well.
Here's what SI had to say about wushock.

Wichita State: We assume this is a corn stalk, but the Shockers’ stubbed-out cigarette butt of a mascot looks like a walking no-smoking ad.

Guess we can't all be as original as the Bluejay.

Where is the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at? When the 1st round ncaa tourney was here in 94 or 95, I was mesmerized by that thing. It looked like an orange grimmace, but shorter and fatter...

I have checked the hot and not so hot lists. These are lame lists. Nebraska's is #4 on the hot list. so is Cal's both are horrible.
Not so hot
Iowa (too much plastic cheap looking)
K-State (big head)
NW (looks OK)
SIUC (looks OK)
San diego St (looks OK)
WSU (fantastic)
Stanford (really bad trash heap?)
Virginia (looks OK)
Wake Forest (looks OK)
UConn (bad looks like a nice dog )

Hot
Dayton
Mich St.
Auburn
Nebraska (really bad)
Santa Cruz
Syracuse
Tenn.
Ok St
Wisc.
Cal bad

Nope, I guess not. But you're right MKR, its better to have one of the ugliest mascots in the whole country instead :banghead: Congratulations!

Don't care about the mascot. Care more about the Sweet 16. How far did the BJ's make it in the tourney this year?

Well even if we did go to the sweet 16, it wouldn't matter since we don't own the Q right...?

It's a great day to have your All-American returning!

This thread happens to be about mascots. So MKR if you don't care....go post on the tourney thread. As for being original, Creighton is the only D1 school that uses Bluejays as a mascot. While it may not be as "original" as wheatshockers, it isn't like we're the Tigers or Bulldogs.

Do you think its worse that Sport Illustrated thinks your mascot is a corn stalk or that it resembles a cigarette butt?

The fact that they would even use the corn stalk thing says something about them. Thier logic is pretty lame that the Wheat Shockers would use corn.

Anyway, Nebraska has a horrible mascot. I don't know about all the others since I don't care that much about mascots.....

"Today’s Billy is, for a lack of better terms, lame. First of all, Billy the Bluejay looks nothing like a real blue jay. Just because he’s a blue bird doesn’t mean he’s a blue jay.

Secondly, the expression on Billy’s face is one of discomfort and frustration, not intensity and determination. He’s just frumpy.

Also, looking at Billy, it’s a lot easier for me to imagine him standing in my bedroom doorway telling me to clean my room or do my homework than it is to imagine him leading a crowd of enthusiastic Jays fans in a post-game celebration. To be quite honest, he looks more like a middle-aged woman with a bad hairdo than he does a legitimate college mascot."

A mascot's purpose is to be highly identifiable, unique, and entertainment for children. Pretty has never been a requisite to becoming a successful college mascot. That being said, notoriety is a whole heckuva lot better than insignificance -Bluejay.

you and your fellow first-graders may be entertained by mascots but a lot of folks think they are a symbol of the university, too. there's no correct definition of what a mascot is supposed to bring to the table. some are fierce looking (michigan state, florida state), some are jokes (western kentucky).
i'd prefer the gray and brown dawgs of siu undergo an operation to look more vicious.

Clod,

You really need to stop bringing children into the discussion with the WSU mascot.

Really.

Wushock has all the "notoriety" it ever needs.

WSU fans want a child friendly environment??

Let's see how the conversation might go:

small child to his little brother- "I heard some older boys at school talking, and I know what that thing they are doing with their fingers REALLY means, it is gross!"

little brother to mother- "Mom, what are those people doing with their fingers, we don't know what that means, do we?"

Mom- no.

Mom to Dad (in a hushed tone)-do you know what it means?

Dad to whispers to Mom, who looks as though she has just discovered a cockroach in her salad at The Wheat Shuck Cafe. Older brother whispers to younger brother, who looks as though he has just smelled a chili fart. Little brother ponders the whole thing as the Salukis go on a 12-0 run.

Little brother to Mom- "Mom why would guys want to stick their fingers...Mom, look! The cheerleaders are doing it too, and they are girls! Oh, this is a very strange place Mom, I told you I didn't want to move to Kansas, I wish they would stop doing that, it is creepy. I want to go home. I don't like Emerald City."

As Mom and Dad are drifting off to sleep that night, "Honey why do the cheerleaders do that, don't you think that is pretty strange?"

"We're in Kansas now Dorothy".
