Game 1 wrap-up:

OMAHA, Neb.—The University of Evansville baseball team pounded out 13 base hits, including seven extra-base hits, on Friday afternoon, and senior RHP Adam Rogers tossed his third complete-game victory in a row, as the Purple Aces posted a 9-2 victory over the host Creighton University Bluejays at the CU Sports Complex in Omaha.

“This was a great team effort,” said UE head coach Dave Schrage. “From an execution standpoint, we really couldn’t play much better as a team.

“Different guys up and down the lineup came up with key base hits today, and Adam Rogers was able to settle down after being up in the strike zone early to toss a great game.”

UE sophomore outfielder Jim Viscomi set the tone for the contest in the first inning, as he roped a triple to center field to lead off the game. Junior outfielder Kern Watts then followed with a solid single to right field to score Viscomi and give UE a 1-0 lead. Watts would eventually come around to score on a Pat Tumilty sacrifice fly to give UE a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Purple Aces would add two more runs in the second inning on a lead-off triple by junior Robbie Minor, a sacrifice bunt by fellow junior Ryan Barrett, a double by Viscomi and a sacrifice fly by Watts. Creighton would chip away for single runs in the second and the third innings, including a solo home run by senior third baseman Zach Daeges, to trim UE’s lead to 4-2, before Rogers would settle into a groove and quiet the Bluejay bats.

Rogers (4-3) did not allow a runner to advance past second base following Daeges’ home run, as he scattered four base hits over the final six innings. On the afternoon, Rogers gave up just two runs on nine base hits while striking out four to move into fifth place all-time at UE with 269 career strikeouts.

“I really think that Daeges’ home run was a wake up call for Adam,” said Schrage. “After he gave up the home run, Adam relaxed and was able to work ahead in the count. And for any pitcher, being able to work ahead in the count is key, especially while pitching with a lead.”

Evansville would put the game out of reach in the fifth inning, as the Purple Aces scored three runs against the Creighton bullpen. Tumilty opened UE’s three-run fifth inning rally with a double off of the wall in right field. Senior outfielder Jeff Fontaine and Minor then followed two batters later with back-to-back doubles to give UE a 6-2 lead. Barrett would bring home UE’s final run of the rally with another RBI sacrifice bunt.

Evansville would tack on single runs in the sixth and eighth innings on an RBI base hit by senior Kyle Smith and a wild pitch by CU reliever Pat Venditte to grab a 9-2 lead.

Tumilty launched two doubles for UE, while Viscomi and Minor each collected a double and a triple offensively. In all, eight of UE’s nine starters collected base hits, with Tumilty, Viscomi, Minor, Smith, and Watts all posting two-hit games.

“It was great to see guys like Pat Tumilty, Kern Watts, Jim Viscomi, and Robbie Minor swing the bat well today,” said Schrage. “Pat and Kern have really been swinging it well, and when you are able to get the same type of production out of Jim and Robbie, it makes our lineup very tough to pitch to.

“This was a very good win for us, but the job is not done. We still have two games remaining in the series, and we need to come to the ballpark ready for a battle tomorrow, because Creighton will be ready to play.”

With the victory, Evansville moves into third place in the Missouri Valley Conference, as the Purple Aces are now 23-17 overall and 7-6 in the MVC. Creighton, meanwhile, slips to 21-13 overall and 6-7 in the Valley. The same two teams will continue the series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., as junior RHP Matt Brinkmann (2-3, 2.91 ERA) will square off with Creighton LHP Marc Lewis (3-0, 3.67 ERA). Game 2 wrap-up

OMAHA, Neb.—The Creighton University Bluejays scored four runs in the first inning Saturday and never looked back, as the Bluejays flew past the visiting University of Evansville Purple Aces, 13-3, at the CU Sports Complex in Omaha, Nebraska.

Creighton scored runs in only three innings, but the Bluejays scored four runs in the first and fourth innings before ending the game early with five runs in the eighth inning. Creighton set the tone early, sending 10 men to the plate in a four-run first inning.

The Bluejays took advantage of uncharacteristic wildness from UE starter Matt Brinkmann (2-4) in the four-run first, as Brinkmann walked four of the first eight men he faced in the frame. He entered the contest with just 12 walks in 58.2 innings of work.

Outfielder John Nowaczyk began Creighton’s four-run frame with a solid single to right field. Brinkmann then walked the next three men he faced to force across the first run of the game. CU first baseman Darin Ruf then followed with a two-run single to left-center field, and outfielder Ross Sinclair added an RBI sacrifice bunt to give CU a 4-0 lead.

Evansville would load the bases against Creighton starter Marc Lewis (4-0) in the second inning, but Lewis induced an inning-ending ground out to get out of the jam. The Bluejays would then tack on four more runs in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double by third baseman Zach Daeges, an Evansville error, and a two-run triple by Sinclair to take an 8-0 lead.

The Purple Aces would finally get to Lewis and the Bluejays for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to trim the lead to 8-3. Junior Ryan Barrett and sophomore Jim Viscomi produced back-to-back RBI singles to kick-start Evansville’s two-out rally, while junior Kern Watts followed with an RBI double to cap the rally.

The game would remain 8-3 until the eighth inning, when Creighton would score five runs (one earned) against UE relievers Kai Tuomi and Mark Murray. Pinch-hitter Mark Wellwood capped the rally and ended the game with a walk-off, three-run triple to center field to induce the MVC’s 10-run rule.

“Creighton came out very aggressive today and did a good job of taking the game to us,” said UE head coach Dave Schrage. “Now, we have to respond tomorrow and be ready to go from the first pitch.

“Tomorrow’s game is a very important game for both teams. The winner wins the series, earns the series tiebreaker, and remains in the top three or four of the conference race. The loser, meanwhile, falls back in the pack and will have some work to do down the stretch in the conference race. We need to come out with the same type of intensity that Creighton played with today, and we have to be ready for a battle.”

Freshman Jeremy Kuester and junior Robbie Minor paced the Evansville offensive attack with two hits apiece. Ruf led Creighton by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Lewis earned the victory for Creighton by scattering two unearned runs on three base hits and six walks in 5.1 innings of work. Brinkmann suffered the loss by giving up eight runs (five earned) on six hits in four innings of work.

With the loss, Evansville drops to 23-18 overall and 7-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Meanwhile, Creighton improves to 22-13 overall and 7-7 in the Valley. The two teams will square off in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., as junior RHP Ben Norton (4-3, 3.35 ERA) will get the start for the Purple Aces.

Game 3 wrap-up:

OMAHA, Neb.—The University of Evansville baseball team picked up its third Missouri Valley Conference series victory in a row on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Aces rode the arm of junior pitcher Ben Norton and the bat of junior third baseman Kirk Bacsu to a 7-1 victory over the Creighton University Bluejays at the CU Sports Complex in Omaha.

Norton (5-3) tossed his second strong start in as many weekends, as he held Creighton to just one run on five base hits in 8.0 innings of work. Norton took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and held the Bluejays to only a seeing-eye single through the first six innings.

While Norton was strong in the center of the diamond, the Purple Aces’ offense scratched across one run in the first inning and four more in the third inning to grab a commanding 5-0 cushion. UE took advantage of a two-out error by Creighton third baseman Zach Daeges in the first inning to score its first run, as after Daeges’ two-base error, Bacsu roped an RBI single to center field to give UE a 1-0 lead.

Bacsu would then kick-start Evansville’s four-run third inning, as he launched a two-run triple off of Creighton starter Ben Mancuso (3-4) to score UE’s first two runs of the frame. Fellow junior Pat Tumilty then followed with his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field, to move UE’s lead to 5-0.

The Bluejays finally touched up Norton for a single run in the seventh inning on a pair of doubles by Daeges and outfielder Chase Odenreider, but Norton was able to get out of the jam and his teammates scored two runs against preseason All-America relief pitcher Scott Reese in the eighth inning to grab a 7-1 lead.

The Bluejays would threaten once again in the eighth inning to trim into the lead, but the Norton induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to get out of a bases loaded jam. Senior reliever Scott Souther then pitched a perfect ninth inning to nail down the victory.

“The players really responded today,” said Schrage. “We talked to the team about how important the first three innings were going to be today in terms of momentum, and the team really responded. We were able to score the run in the first inning, and then added four more runs in the third to put things out of reach.

“And, what can you say about Ben Norton? He was phenomenal once again this afternoon. He did a great job of attacking Creighton’s hitters all day long, and did a great job of keeping their offense at bay. Ben has really stepped up the last two weekends and has helped us win each of the last two series.

“This is a big victory for us. Now we own tiebreakers over four teams in the conference, and we are standing in the top four of the league standings heading into our upcoming six-game home stand.”

Bacsu led Evansville’s offense by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Odenreider and fellow outfielder John Nowaczyk each collected two hits apiece to lead the Bluejays.

With the victory, Evansville improves to 24-18 overall and 8-7 in the MVC, while Creighton falls to 22-14 overall and 7-8 in the Valley. Evansville now returns home to Braun Stadium to open up a six-game home stand on Wednesday night, as the Purple Aces will welcome cross-town rival Southern Indiana to Braun Stadium for the third-annual “Battle at the Braun.”

Well,

I was hoping that CU would win the series for our benefit...but now looks like I have to also be a fan of whoever plays CU.
