I'm not a CU fan, but I researched this on the NCAA site when Funk got hurt.

There is a rounding factor. If 20% of the games results in 5.5 or more, then 6 games will be allowed for medical RS status.

A hypothetical. Here's the rule: If a player plays in less than 20% of the team's games, and has his season ended by an injury before the half-way point, he can get a medical redshirt.

Now, if that 20% would end up being a number like 5.5 games, he can play in 6 games and still be eligible, which is what happened with Funk. He'll be back next year.
