Just thought I would throw that out there and see what kind of reponse I get, seeing as how about 90% of this board seems to be WSU fans, are least 90% of the posts come from WSU fans this should be entertaining.
And GO!!!

Great player, and I don't see any reason why he couldn't be POY. Had UNI won the Valley this year, he probably would have been POY this year. Not sure what you think most WSU fans are going to say that is different.

Very positive choice. Great player. We'll just have to wait until the end of the season. Agree with MKR that if UNI had won the Valley, Stout would have probably been POY. Sorry not to ruffle your feathers, but don't see any argument here.

Stout...possible...but not a lock by any means.
I'm going with either Kyle Wilson of Wichita, Tatum of SIU, and Funk of CU. Sorry I can't narrow it down farther than that, there isn't a clear cut favorite at this time.

Stout, Wilson, Tolliver will be good. If Tolliver has another drastic "improvement" gain, he will be very smooth.
I think Falker will surprise some people and be even more of an intimidating force this year. I believe he is the only Valley player listed in the top 100 picks (NBA) for next year.
However, I think after all is said and done, it is Funks to lose, with all the pre-season accolades last year and then he got hurt. The question being his "ring rust" and rehab.

It's gonna come down to Tatum and Funk. No doubt Stout will and should receive some votes though.

Thats a cool link my friend. I've said since Falker came to SIU that he had an NBA physique, the question was, did he know how to use it. He's learning and getting better, but he's not quite there yet. For him to be in the top 100 is pretty impressive. I think before anyone jumps all over this, saying Falker doesn't deserve this, remember that the NBA looks at POTENTIAL, and not at results. He has an NBA ready body, and some glimpses of good post moves. and for many NBA teams, thats enough to consider him a "project."

I think he deserves it, I think he could be the next Rodman type, because he won't block many shots at the next level or score much. he could be a universal garbage man and defender/rebounder. He's very strong and could probably put on more muscle, he has the frame.
Its probably a matter of him wanting to fight for it, because it won't be easy for him without being a few inches taller.

I agree that Falker has potential. Needs to develop a little more range though IMO.

possible early POY candidates
Funk
Tolliver
Wilson
Stout
Ahearn
Tatum
Young
Questions:
Will Funk be back to preinjury form?
Will Tolliver maintain his production from last year, with a healtier line up (hopefullly) and more offensive options?
Can Wilson step up when defenses don't have to worry about Miller?
Can UNI's new guards get Stout the ball and run the system?
Will Ahearn ever be viewed as more than a shooter?
Can Tatum rebound from a season many consider below expectations?
Can Young, Tatum, and SUI's offense produce outside of just getting points of turnovers consistently?

Yah, range would be one area, and that would be just the start. I'm not bagging on Falker, He's the best NBA potential SIU's had in a while, but if Roland Roberts Didn't make it back in the day, I'm kinda worried he won't either. But he's got time, he's only a junior, if he keeps progressing as he has, he'll be a monster by his senior year.

Odd that the leading vote getter from the returning players (2nd overall) is hardly even mentioned as a POY candidate.

Candidates are Funk, Wilson, Ahearn, Stout, Tolliver, Young, Tatum and Cooz.
Funk is a candidate for obvious reasons. The guy can play no matter how much I dislike him.
Wilson is a warrior and I think will step up and be the man. Not having Miller inside will make it tougher but he has enough surrounding talent to help him.
Ahearn is a great shooter and has improved his game. Can he do enough to get the Bears in the hunt. He needs to be a leader and take this team into a top 3 finish to have a chance
Stout is a good player who I really like alot. Great fundamentals and always suprises me with how good he really is. If his gaurds can handle stepping into big roles he has a very good shot. I agree that if UNI won this year he was POY. Has to have gaurd play to keep UNI in the hunt as well.
Tolliver really impressed me this year. The guy has improved a ton and if he can continue to get better watch out. Having Funk may help or hurt his chances depending on how things go. CU will be in the top 3 unless they lose half the team to injury again.
I believe Young is probably the best player SIU has. I think he has a better all around game then anyone else on the team and see him stepping up and being a leader and really start to stand out more from Tatum.
Tatum is a good player that seems to have potential to be better. Not having Brooks and Co. around seemed to hurt him a little this last season. Maybe he wasn't quite ready to take over. He needs to trust his teammates more and step up and he has a shot.
I don't know if this is really the year for Cooz but I think the guy has a ton of potential to really stand out. WSU should be in the hunt again. And Cooz could/should be one of the big time go to guys for the Shox. He does everything well and if he can become more aggressive and/or a little more selfish at times, he could put up very good numbers. This may be one year too early.

Which is the only reason you won't see Matt Webster's name mentioned. Because of the "ugliness" of his game, it's hard to think of him as a POY candidate, but if the Aces were a top half team, he would get mentioned. He was, at times, unguardable one on one in the low block (look at his FT attempts compared to anyone else in the league). He finished top six (I believe) in scoring and rebounding. There is no reason he shouldn't be top four in each next year.

Can't believe we haven't had a massive outcry for GodShawGod for next year's POY.
He'll be a junior right? And based on this quote:

Re: Matt Shaw, beginning of soph year
“Just remember what you say now, because by the time he graduates from SIU, he will be a great college basketball player.”
You would think that Shaw, a "great college basketball player" big man in the company of Christian Laettner, Wes Unseld, Wilt Chamberlain, Lew Alcindor, Bill Russell, Bill Walton, Elvin Hayes, Antoine Carr, Xavier McDaniel, Ralph Sampson, Charles Barkley, and others would certainly be able to garner an MVC POY award his junior year. No?

You're one of the first to mention Ogirri...he's one of my favorite players to watch. He always seems to be under control. I predicted good things in the NCAAs from him and he did pretty well. If they keep him at the #2 he could be POY, but I think Funk will be the prohibitive favorite...if he's healed.

Were people really saying Falker has a chance to be in the NBA? What is he going to play, shooting guard? He's not nearly big enough to play the four or five spot, and doesn't shoot well enough to play the three. Sorry, but there is no way.
SIU fans told us last year that Shaw had an NBA body. I still can't wrap my head around this one. He has the NBA body of a 3 guard, not a power forward like he plays in college.

One person that could garner a few votes, not sure about win the award could be Greg Dilligard. He is always a candidate for DPOY, but I think he can really step up his production now that he has a lot more help. I don't think he could average 20 a game, but I do think he can get 15 a game. He had 9.9 a game but no help beneath.
I do think it's really early for preseason picks...but if Funk comes back healthy, he's got my vote.

I think Stout is a good player, definitely a first team All-Valley player, but there is Tatum, Funk, Tolliver, and Ahearn as well. I think any of those 4 could easily make this argument as well, bottomline is we won't be able to determine this until during the season. All though I would put my money on one of the Creighton players being Player of the Year, when they are both healthy they are the top 2 players in the Valley and I am not just saying that because I am a Creighton fan. Anyone who was at the MVC tournament saw Tolliver against O'Bryant and Tolliver definitely won that battle, and he won the one earlier in the year as well.

We're seeing the same usual suspects here. POY will likely go to the best player on the champ. Since I see only CU, SIU and WSU as having a shot, I say it will be one of Funk, Tolliver, Young, Tatum, or Cousinard.
As a change up, here is my list of the most underrated returning players.
WSU: Brauer. Great job of running the show for the Shox.
SIU: Mullins, Shaw, Faulker. Hell, the whole team killed us in Omaha. Dawgs, why couldn't you play like you did against La. Tech against us just ONCE?
UNI: Coleman. Tough match-up inside.
MSU: Bilyeu (sp?). Tough cookie. Always hustling.
Most underrated coach: Porter Moser, Ill. St.

DogShawDog and KW can be nice players but I don't think either has a POY in them. They get the same number laughing smileys as Ogirri.
Shaw needs to grow some balls. When he wants to play, he's a very good player. But, the boy tends to take full games off, like his 0-fer klunker at Wichita last year. For SIU, that's trouble.

I tend to drink from clean Kool-Aid glasses, unlike some of my Saluki brethren. I've NEVER posted one word on this site extolling the virtues of Matt Shaw. He can be a very good player but I'm not riding the same GodShawGod train others are.
If he doesn't get an attitude adjustment and realize he could be a top 10 player in this league with a little effort, he's useless and a waste of a scholarship.
