What pitcher has
*an overall record of 8-1,
*a conference record of 5-0,
*an ERA of 1.95
*allowed an Opp Btg Avg of .196,
*walked only 14 and striking out 53
*in 69.1 innings
* NOT been named a Valley Pitcher of the week yet this season?
If you guessed Aaron Shafer, you're absolutely correct. Mystifying.
Are freshmen not eligible for Player / Pitcher of the week consideration?

An easy answer, he does not play for the best team in the Valley.

Shafer has been consistent game in game out all year, but each week doesn't throw the "best" game by the numbers. However he never has an off game giveing him the most impressive season for any starting pitcher this season. About time he gest recognized for this stat "In six Valley starts this season, Shafer is 5-0 with a 1.66 ERA. He has allowed just 27 hits in 43.1 innings, while walking eight and striking out 37" Maybe next week the powers that be will reward his effort with the Pitcher of the Week nod. Sure am glad Aaron chose the Shockers. Hard to believe THE ACE of the valley is a freshmen.

When we play in the NCAA tourney, I'm going to be glad we have Kris Johnson, Aaron Shafer and the other WSU pitchers. I would not be surprised if Kris is the star of the MVC tourney and the NCAA tourney but I'll also be happy if it is Aaron (or Anthony Capra or Max Hutson or Noah Booth or Rob Musgrave or Travis Banwart or Damon Sublett or Noah Krol or ...).:shockers:

Aaron is likely to be All-MVC, All-Newcomer, All-Freshman - and mentioned somewhere in All-American.
I'll take that over PoW any day.
I'm certain Aaron will gladly accept his $3+ mill in a couple of years as a first-round pick rather than have any MVC PoW stats.
Chances are overwhelming that Kris Johnson is going to want another year before he goes pro.
Capra is a potential Fr All-American.
Regionals only need 3 starters. Johnson, Schafer, Banwart. I'll take that. Relievers - Booth and Capra. Closer - Sublett, if he can recover from injury and illness.

It is hard to believe that Aaron hasn't been named Pitcher of the Week yet.
So far, he has been the pitcher of the year in the Valley, I guess the sum of the parts is better than the parts.

It's OK, let those individuals have their little plaque signifying a good week. We'll take the big team trophy that signifies another good year.

The reason Shafer is the pitcher of the year is told beyond the ERA stat - in 12 MORE innings pitched Shafer has allowed 14 fewer hits, given up one less run overall although he has given up 3 more ER, walked only 3 more and struck out 27 more. Oh yeah - 8 wins for Shafer ( 4 more than Schaecher) 1 loss for Shafer (1 less than Schaecher) in the same number of starts. Some other stats from the same site:
#2 in opponents batting average -Shafer at .196 (#1 in Sinkbeil at .189) Schaecher doesn't appear on the list.
On the list for Sac bunts allowed and Sac Flies allowed - Schaecher tied at #1 for bunts with 11 and tied for 3 for flies with 4. Shafer doesn't appear on either of these lists.
So yeah - Schaecher is doing fairly well - but he ain't no Shafer. As a matter of fact, look over the pitching stats- http://www.mvc.org/baseball/lgplyrs.htm
and it becomes clear - if he can keep finish out pitching with the same intensity he has so far . . . SHAFER is the clear MVC Pitcher of the Year . . and perhaps a few other honors as well.

While win/loss record is not a good measure (e.g. good pitcher on a bad team), you have persuaded me that Shafer should be the MVC POY (Pitcher of the Year).

Agreed - W/L record can be a poor measure - but with Shafer it is impressive because as a Freshmen he had the first 3 MVC wins for the Shockers. Each time winning the final game of a series and keeping the Shockers from being swept - and at least one of those was in pretty poor weather conditions if I remember right. I know others have said it - but I think we are again going to have the pleasure of watching a 1st round draft choice hone his skills.

WOW! Great stats. Of course the season isn't over yet, but at this point it looks very good for Shafer.:shockers:

Shafer just keeps showing his stuff. Last night during the 14th as a pintch hitter gets the ball on the ground to move the runner over and ends up safe at first after a poor throw due to his hustle down the line. What a ball player.
By the way . . a look at Division One NCAA stats shows Shafer making a case for himself as the best freshmen pitcher in the nation with the lowest ERA and most wins of any freshmen. Overall he has the 28th lowest ERA in division one. He has been named to the Roger Clemmens watch list and the following stats from NCAA show up on their web site. These stats are through May 7.

Can't wait to see how he steps up his game with the Friday night start.
