According to Fox News SIU men are ranked 14 in their preseason poll. After such a great showing last season from MVC teams glad to see media starting to look at us at the begining of the season not the middle. Here is the article http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/5473798

It's always good to see a valley school get pub. I would think if they knew much about the valley then CU would have to get some kind of mention too.

Great to see the Valley get some pre-season pub!! CU and WSU should both be getting plenty of votes this season. It's fun to see the MVC turning the corner and getting some love....COOL! :original: :valley:

Fox News is dreaming! Look at the reality:
1. Coaching: Lowery was again the youngest coach in the NCAA tourney...only 2 years of experience. I know, I know he's undefeated against the 2 best coaches in the midwest (Dana and Gramps), and he's got the best 2 year record in the MVC, and has the most championships and post-season bids as player, assistant, and head coach in the Valley's history. But he lost the regular season trophy (Okay, maybe it was just a couple of overtime freethrows that done him in, but we still finished tied for 4th) and the home court string was broken, and we lost to a divII team.
2. Senior leadership: 2 returning seniors...THAT'S ALL...You can't win in the Valley without a lot of seniors...I know we did last year, but usually you can't.
3. Guards: Same nucleus...slow, small, and poor shooters and ball-handlers. Good defense.
4. Forwards: Strong, but slow. Good rebounders, fair shooters. Can't handle bigs, otherwise good defenders.
5. Centers: None...unless you count putting Young on POB, and since POB has moved on we're back to scratch.
6. Redshirts and recruits: Who knows and with only 8 guys on the team last year they'll be extremely important.
7. Facilities: Same old, same really old...but relief is in sight.
Summation: I know that the rest of the collegiate basketball world thinks of the Salukis as the flagship of the Valley (and probably replacing Gonzaga as the masters of midmajors), but I don't know if our unparralled MVC basketball dominance this century justifies us being compaired to Duke, UConn, and the other programs joining us in the elite preseason rankings. (Just my opinion, I could be wrong and SIU might really be that good. Sometimes it's hard to be king.)

I have a bar in my home, and I've made it into a sports-themed place that I and my friends enjoy quite a bit. (Yes, I AM a divorced bachelor.) There's a bunch of great Valley stuff in there. I'm a huge BU fan, but I have hung banners in there from every MVC school. Yes, I'm such a geek that I had them specially made.
I've noticed on this board that every time I post something positive about BU, some ***** will post something negative. Post something positive about SIU? Some ***** will post something negative. Post something positive about WSU, some ***** will post something negative.
Why in the world would Valley fans not wish one another the best, especially when it comes to recruiting and national exposure? What a bunch of morons.
I'm taking down the banners. Go BU! Screw the morons.

If you are serious about your comment, I would have to agree with barkeep that you haven't been on the board long. I just start about a month ago, and I, at first, found a lot of the comments disturbing. I finally realized that the function of the Board is to share information, but a side highlight is the "stackin' the s***" on the other teams that goes along with it. Most of it is done in fun. Take it in stride or you will go nuts.

I was not serious about taking the banners down. And I'm all for friendly banter. The negativity about other programs in the conference surprises me, though. I've always wanted the whole conference to succeed, but when I see the ill-will some Valley fans have for BU or SIU or WSU or whomever, sometimes I wonder whether I've been supporting teams whose fans don't support mine.

Brocks..you also must remember that the message board is a very, very, very small percentage of team's total fan bases.
Sure, you see some of the silly smack talk and name calling on this board. It happens everywhere. But for the most part the posters are cordial and support each team.

I wouldn't call it whining. He's just not used to the board yet. Most of the posters on this board have posted on many boards, and this is the way of the world there. Those of us that are new to posting, have to get used to you guys. I've learned to take what is said here with a grain of salt and let it slide (for the most part). But it does take some getting used to. So cut us "newbies" some slack. We'll get the hang of it. Just takes a little time.

Even in league play I'll kind of root for some of the other teams. As long as they're in the top half of the league and playing the bottom half. The better the showing of the upper teams in conference play the better it looks for the Valley. So if you want a little love during that time, be in the upper part of the conference.
Although even then I find it hard to root for CU, SIU and SWOMO.

didn't say SIU being ranked wasn't good for the valley it is, any team ranked is good for the valley. But when we're on here comparing teams, asking who is better, or who should be ranked, don't expect any niceties. It's one thing to root for the good of the valley, it's a completely different thing to root for your own team to be better than anyone else in the valley. Again, we all support the MVC as a whole, but when we're on a chat board about valley schools, comparing each of those school against each other, it's gonna get heated, espeically if you are an alumni of that school. I'm all for Bradley beating Kansas, but when we discuss Bradley in context with any other valley school, it's on like Donkey Kong, as it should be.

Oh here we go. George W. Bush has by far committed more atrocities than any other president in the last century. The war in Iraq is a farce, complete a mission his daddy couldn't, all the while using the scare tactic of Weapons of Mass Destruction only to find there were none. Using the events of 9/11 to scare Americans into allowing the government to take away many of civil liberties, Using Bin Laden and 9/11 to create a false link between alqueida and Iraq, I'll just touch on the wonderful job his admin. did during hurricane Katrina, and then there is this whole oil crisis and gas prices all the while with his hand in the back pocket of oil rich Saudi Arabia (that whole debacle would take years to explain). Shall I go on? Giving a tax break to the rich, while increasing taxes on the poor and middle class. His top two aides of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfiled are whole discussion on stupidity in them selves. Not to Mention John Ashcroft was on his cabinet, this is the same man who lost an election in missouri to a dead man. I could go on for hours and hours about all the problems with the Bush administration, and yet some how you support this man, un real.

Just one more comment about this (or maybe two or three). We don't disagree, but you're disagreeing with me anyway. I'm not talking about conference play or order of finish. I'm talking about people saying SIU should not be ranked, or Creighton or WSU, because they're not that good. Or people saying that without POB Bradley won't win 7 games next season (what an insult to Tauai and some other graet kids), or Jim Les sucks as a coach after he's done more for the reputation of this conference in the OFF-season than at least 6 or 7 other Valley coaches have ever done. In my opinion, that's BS. I know a lot of Big Ten fans, and they are always huffing and puffing about the BIG TEN, not their own individual teams. I think we should do more of that. Bradley may just finish 7th next year in the MVC, but that doesn't mean BU sucks or Coach Les sucks. It means the Valley is a force.

I'm sure someone will come along and point out how much of power house CU will be, and dis credit SIU as much as they can. Fact of the matter is that The players CU returns are bigger question marks due to injury than anyone SIU brings back, and like it or not returning from injury really is that devestating some times.

Giving CU credit going into next year is not discrediting SIU.
Funk is a great player. Every team will have to alter plans when he is on the court (devastated or not).
I give CU the benefit of the doubt because of the Dana factor.
All Dana had last year were question marks, and he turned every one of them into an exclamation point.

That's true. I just put a lot more emphasis and concern than Jay fans do on Funk's ability to be the player he was before the injury. Him coming back to any where close to where he was, isn't a guaruntee by any means. Maybe its just blind faith in Funk, I can respect that out of a fan, but in reality Funk may come back and be a stud but he could also come back and be awful. I'm just not sold on how good CU will be when Funk comes back, because he is the key, and that key maybe brand new and shiny or really rusty and busted.

DawgieStyle, I don't know why you keep bringing up the injury? If it has ANY effect on his game he will have that rust off by the time the MVC starts. Let's be honest with ourselves here CU is going to be tough along with WSU, MSU and UNI. It will be a dawgfight!

no question CU will be tough. But I keep bringing up the Funk injury because it's more important than anyone is giving it credit for. How many athletes both pro and collegiate have you seen suffer a bad injury and never return to the playing level they were at before the injury? You know the answer as well as I do is the majority. Do some come back full strenght and even better, yes, I will acknowledge that. But the vast majority don't. They still can come back and be decent players, and Funk probably will be a decent player, I just don't see him ever reaching the playing level he was at, I just don't, there is too much precedent for the performance of atheletes deteriorating after a major injury.

I'm curious Dawgie -
Do you even know what Funk's injury was? Do you even know what body part was involved (hint: it wasn't his knee)? Do you know what treatment he got for that injury?
He should be fine. Don't forget, Tolliver will also be back next year and he wasn't injured.

Not to Mention John Ashcroft was on his cabinet, this is the same man who lost an election in missouri to a dead man. I could go on for hours and hours about all the problems with the Bush administration, and yet some how you support this man, un real.
Add another victim/sheep to Michael Moore's pasture of lunacy. Let me guess, you were sitting there opening night, mouth full of popcorn, leaning over to your sweetie, "No _ _ _ _, he really did all of that??".

Be very, very careful when naming Funk's injury - his labrum. That is not a word where you want a typo.
There is one thing I wanted to add to the Bush discussion - can he play PG?
I had the same injury as Funk and he will come back just fine. I have 6 staples in my shoulder and was playing bball in 6 months. It is an injury you don't want as a Pitcher. He will be just fine.

cold it strikes me as no surprise where your political ideals reside. but swing on over the off topic disicussion, you'll find plenty of fodder, facts and intelligent thought on the topic. But be warned, truth hurts.

I'm with Joey here. As an independant I find the Fat Man to be a complete fool. No inteligent person would use him as a basis for rational debate.

actually I've never seen a Miachel Moore film. I would agree it's probably propoganda for Democratic fodder. But from what you've said, I'd probably agree with alot of stuff he would say. The Bush administration has been a disaster, I find it difficult to beleive so many people are still blindly following this man as the leader of the free world. It's one thing to make a mistake to support and vote for him, it's a down right tragedy that AFTER the path he's taken this country down and the repeated ignorance Bush has Shown, that you still would support and vote for him. Here's to hoping that at some point you might realize that blind allegiance to a particular party might kill this country. Luckily for most American's as is evident by Mr. Bush's 30% approval rating they have discovered the errors of their way.

I wasn't buying into all this "sleeping giant" hype or the one-year run to the S16 proving something hype, but...
If other Valley schools are producing and marketing Shocker memorabilia and displaying it in their arenas, maybe all the hype is true.
I'm glad to hear that SIU is contributing to WSU's record year for licensing income from WSU-themed products.
WSU needs to market some urinal guards (those things right under the breath mints) with Shocker logos on them. Those would sell like hotcakes in Valley towns other than Wichita.
If people want to wipe their butts or p~ss on Shocker-licensed products - no problem. Just keep sending that licensing revenue in. We may have some more coaches who deserve raises next year.

I thought my post might catch some fish. I had no idea the fish would be jumping into the boat, landing on the cutlery and filleting themselves.
To express the weakness of that post I have to go to a knockoff of Wierd Al Yankovich knocking off a Madonna song.
"Like a sturgeon"
"Filleted for the very first time"
