I read somewhere that Indiana plays Duke next year. I am knowledgeable about the college game but not so much all the rules. I was just curious what this does for Ind st and Siu as far as strength of schedule and RPI?

Nothing if they don't play Indiana or Duke. If they do, it would be part of their "opponents-opponents" factor.

Well, since Indiana is on the schedule.....

You may remember that Indiana State was in the top 15 of the RPI through the end of December. That included a win over Indiana who had played (and almost beat) Duke. It will help the RPI and SOS a lot.

I can't seem to remember what happened in the season after that... :chair:

Damn injuries!

And way too many miracle shots by the "other" team......of course, it would be clutch if it were the other way around......:sycamores:

(apologies sycamore fans, not truly directed at you)

It doesn't matter how it affects the RPI, the RPI is worthless and obviously not a reliable signal for determining the quality of a team.

I can certainly understand why MSU fans would feel that way. For that matter WSU in 2005 did not get in with a RPI of 42. Of course that rating was not near high enough to make the tournament.

The RPI is not worthless. It is what it is -- one component of a team's entire season-long profile.

An RPI ranking of 21 is pretty impressive -- until you start looking at the details and see a 4-8 record against other teams in the RPI Top 50. Then the #21 ranking falls into doubt; and when four other teams in your conference can put together Top 50 RPIs, and better records against Top 50 teams, and truly impressive nonconference road wins, and regular-season and tournament titles... well, you shouldn't get mad at the RPI when you have the fifth-best profile in a four-bid league.

Man I hate it when someone brings logic and reasoning into a discussion. Still MSU should have had a fifth bid for the MVC this year, To thow out the 19 or 21 RPI as not worthy does not do justice to the ratings system when the MVC had a good showing in the tournament and MSU did pretty well in the NIT. Obviously, the RPI does stand for something when it is used to justify keeping a team out until this year.

I think that there have been years where the Selection Committee might have taken five teams from the Valley; it just so happens that this year's committee chose to reward the second-best teams in the WAC and Mountain West instead.

There's no reason to whine about it, and no reason to overreact. The Bears could have won more games; they didn't, and gave the committee an excuse to overlook them. Maybe next time the team has a gaudy RPI and weak peripherals, the coach won't declare openly that a win in St. Louis is unnecessary.

losing ugly in the first round of the valley tournament certainly didn't help mo. state's chances.

I think this last year was about the only year that the MVC would have gotten 5 teams in. Next year maybe just 2 or 3 if the RPI's are not high enough. I am not whining just discussing a topic. I think the NCAA selection committee looked at conference affliations in offering bids, not just who the best teams were, and were not going to allow 5 teams in from the MVC.
