1) Bradley V Illinois State - War on 74...by far the most intense.
2) SIU V Creighton
After those 2 the intensity of any of the rivals falls off significantly in my mind.

Rivalries have to have staying power. That is why Bradley-ISU is and will probably always will be the league's "best" rivalry.
I've thought SIU-Evansville would be a good one and it still might be. There is some history there.
I think Drake-UNI should be as well but isn't for some reason.

Same state, but that's about it. The schools have no real history between each other prior to UNI joining the MVC. I guess it's similar to Bradley-SIU....same state, but not a true rivalry.

For Evansville. They're best non-conference rivalry is with Western Kentucky. In conference, it's the battle of the bottom dwellers with Indiana State. Southern Illinois has some history too, but they've been out of our league here recently.
I would say the best MVC rivalry in recent years is SIU and Creighton, that series is usually picked up on national TV

After Wimbledom, the announcer asked Andy Roddick about his rivalry with Roger Federer, Andy said, "I have win one once in a while for it to be a rivalry."
That said, Drake playes Iowa and Iowa State annually, and I think coaches, fans and players want to win those the most. I agree with DUBulldog that the UNI game is not anything special. That came out like a slam but it wasn't meant to be, UNI has a great program, but not a big history with Drake. I would guess that there is no extra buzz in Cedar Falls when the BUlldogs come to town either. I'd say in the Valley, Drake has a long a storied rivalry with Creighton and a lot of fans make the trip over from Omaha. I'd say that's the big one for the Bulldogs.

Yep, EVERY Creighton fan I've ever ran into had their noses in the air and were jerks. I've never had one reason to do anything but hate them. Goes back to when I was a student at WSU and there was a Creighton fan in the student section. Biggest jerk I've met....and oh was it so sweet when we beat them and I got to rub it in his face while he was leaving. Almost as sweet as laughing at all the Creighton fans that were trying to run me over on their way out of the Saavis after they lost this year LOL. Good memories!!

IlSt/BU is the best rivalry in the Valley hands down. Always has been and always will be. Its one of those games where you basically throw records out the window (which given our record this year that was a good thing  ) and just have at it.
IlSt/SIU is another good one, but its not as heralded or advertised as the rivalry w/BU. (Probably because weve been so up & down the past 5-6 years while SIU has remained consistent). But there still have been alot of great games between the two, especially in the 90s when both teams were always atop the conference. (The '90 MVC title game for example...biggest and loudest crowd ever at Redbird Arena. What an INSANE game that was).
Non-Conference wise, IlSt/DePaul was always a good one in the 80s and 90s. Id love to see that matchup revived. We nearly had them on the sched this year but they couldnt return the game for 2 years and thats when the Cincinatti deal happened.

I don't think Creighton-Nebraska is a rivalry. In order for it to be a true rivalry, the other team must win at least some of the time, Nebraska has not.
CU - SIU I think is the best rivalry in the Valley, but if we don't start getting some wins against the Dawgs, it too will no longer be a rivalry.
CU - WSU is somewhat of a rivalry. I think WSU considers it a rivalry more than the average Jays fan, IMO.
CU - Drake - Even though Creighton owns the series, some of the best and most exciting games I have seen in the MVC have been between these two. Last year in Des Moines was a game to remember for sure.

The best rivalry the MVC has ever seen is WSU vs. Tulsa. Nothing comes close to matching two nationally ranked top ten teams with a slew of All Americans and NBA talent. And let's not forget the regular season barn burner national tv matchup on CBS between WSU and Tulsa.
I know BU-Ill St. love their series, but to claim it as best ever is ridiculous.

I'd have to go with BU vs. ISU as a real good rivalry because it's almost always a complete war every time these two teams play one another. Even when both schools records may not be the best, it's still BU vs. ISU and it's a battle versus an arch-rival.
IMO Creighton vs. SIU is a fantastic rivalry now, but if one of those two programs drops off record-wise in the future, I don't see that rivalry having near the same instensity. As for WSU and the Golden Hurricane, yeah that WAS a crazy fun rivalry, but the keyword is WAS. When was the last time WSU and Tulsa played each other?
IMO, the 35 miles seprating BU and ISU plays into the continued intensity of their rivalry. With the upswing of all the MVC teams, I think we might see some more heated rivalries coming in the next few years, and that's good for us fans. I LOVE IT! :valley: :original:

I don't have a clear sense that Drake has an MVC rival right now. :ermm:
When I attended Drake in the early 80s, it seemed the student rivalry was with Bradley (lots of suburban Chicagoans at both schools), but the non-alums at the games got more fired up for Creighton. Must've been a Des Moines-Omaha rivalry more than a school rivalry.
At most D-I schools, rivalries are mostly driven by football, which has made it tough to maintain a rivary at Drake. Iowa State...Grinnell...Creighton...Bradley...all big football games that won't return.

DaShox, I am completely in agreement with you about the WSU vs. Tulsa rivalry being amazing and great for the Valley. However, when I think of a rivalry, I consider it two teams that play each other on a semi-permanent basis. I'm not disrespecting Valley history at all, but it's been awhile (notwithstanding the 2003 game), that the Golden Hurricane and Shockers have been true rivals. Man, I would love it if Tulsa's b-ball program would get better (BAD idea leaving the Valley), so the two schools could heat up their rivalry. Unfortunately, now all WSU would get out of playing Tulsa would be a major hit to the Shockers RPI rating.

If we're discussing rivalries of the past, Bradley and Cincinnati had a great one through the 1960s. BU and UC, led by multiple consensus all-Americans Chet Walker and Oscar Robertson, spent a lot of time ranked together in the top-5 as they battled for Valley crowns.
Twenty years later, after the Bearcats had left the Valley, Bradley and Cincinnati played the longest game in NCAA history. The 7 OT Bearcat win in Peoria likely bumped the 1982 MVC champion Braves from the NCAA Tournament to the NIT, which they won handily....

To me, rivalries must mean some give and take - a cloes series. Thus, CU really doesn't have any right now.
Geographically, Drake would be it and from what I hear, their place is pretty quiet until CU shows up with 1/2 the crowd which pisses off the DU fans so they rowdy up for the game. However, CU dominates for quite some time.
SIU would seem to be a natural since SIU and CU have carried the Valley for the past 6 years but SIU is kicking our arses the last three years so it's hard to call it a rivalry until CU gets a win.
WSU would be a rivalry for everyone in the Valley since they have the most obnoxious fans in college basketball but Altman owns Turgeon 11-3 so not much of a rivalry there except the fact that the Midget beat the odds and hit a lucky shot last year.:naughty: Still 5-1 in the last 6.
MSU has turned into something of a rivalry as MSU was dominating but CU has won 2 of the last 3 so there is something starting there. However, there isn't any real geographic proximity and MSU hasn't proved to be a Valley banner carrier with no NCAA appearances in quite a while.

As an MSU fan, I'd rank the Valley rivalries as follows:
(1) SIU. Same colors, a series that dates back to the 60s, tons of matchups in St. Louis with a fairly even record overall. There's always a special feeling to beating the Ugly Dawgs.
(2) Northern Iowa. A rivalry that started in the AMCU, it's been up and down but is currently back up. UNI won the 2004 tournament title over the Bears, then the Bears knocked 'em out in '05, and the Panthers repaid the favor this year (in what seems pretty clearly to have been an NCAA elimination game).
(3) Creighton. The Bears have had the edge in the last few years in regular-season matchups, but have been owned in St. Louis. There will be great rejoicing in Springfield when the Bears manage to beat the Jays in STL (no matter how many years/coaches/teams it takes).
(4) Bradley. Between Deon Jackson and Coleco Buie, two of the most dramatic moments in Valley tournament history have come from Bear/Brave matchups. The teams are usually evenly matched in the regular season, too.
(5) Illinois State. It's been a while since the Redbirds dominated the league, but the fact that they did so on the backs of the Bears hasn't been lost. This rivalry has quieted down significantly in the past few years, but if Moser can turn the 'Birds around, this one could be back in a hurry.
(6) Wichita State. Always seems to end up on the other side of the tournament bracket, and if I recall correctly, have only met the Bears twice in St. Louis. (EDIT: Three postseason matchups, with the Bears winning all three.) Regular-season matchups have featured long winning streaks on both sides, which don't make for good rivalries.
(7) Indiana State. The '99 Bears probably needed their overtime win over the Sycs to earn their at-large bid into that year's Dance. That's the high point in the rivalry (at least in the Division I era), with lots of one-sidedness in the regular-season matchups.
(8) Evansville. In the Division II days, both the Aces and Sycamores beat the Bears for national championships. But those days are long gone, and there hasn't been much to build a rivalry on in the Valley.
(9) Drake. Only met once in St. Louis. The Bulldog program has struggled during MSU's short time in the Valley. No prior history to build on. This rivalry is all potential, still waiting to get started.

I think the point has more to do with CURRENT rivals. CU-Nebraska could be considered a rivalry since the two teams play every year. If you look back through history, a lot of Valley teams have had good rivalries with other schools, but obviously hold no relevance now.

Hmm.. maybe not.. I just noticed your time-stamp! Good-thinking then brother Shock! I was holding my pics for a few days until Rasputin's tool started chirping. Sure enough.. he did in the off-topic forum. Boy these guys are so predictable.

What are you talking about? I was just responding to your half-witted attempt to try and bash CU and the Q. Do you honestly expect people not to respond to such comments? You need to chill out, you get offended too easily.

don't you love that blue curtain and their 450 lbs. retarded dragon for a mascot? were you physically threatened by one of the hundreds of bussed (sp?) in inner city kids? isn't "the lighting of the eternal flame" the WORST pre-game ceremony EVER?
all i know is this: we parked, got out of the car, viewed the landscape and got back in the car to wait until closer to game time. i called my insurance agent and added an extra $200,000 of life coverage. then, we went inside and watched some jimmy collins-bought felon beat siu in the closing seconds.
it's a scary scene.

Oh come on now. Up until Bruce Pearl arrived UW-Milwaukee played in one of the worst DI facilities in America. A fan smells a little success and forgets most of the program's history ;)
FYI, I don't find the UIC Pavilion to be that bad of a place. Is it the best? No. But certainly not the worst I've been to.

i don't think the facility is all that bad.
it's just the area it's in and the atmosphere surrounding games there we're talking about.

the Klotsche Center wasn't great but there's one different between us and UIC; we've upgraded.

CU - Drake - Even though Creighton owns the series, some of the best and most exciting games I have seen in the MVC have been between these two. Last year in Des Moines was a game to remember for sure.
Very true the best game I went to all year was Creighton v. Drake at Drake. It was great there were almost as many Jays fans as Bulldog fans. Very fun game!

HIBMA! HIBMA!
That was a great time, I had no idea that the seats I bought were literally on the floor behind the basket, it was great. Then there was the drunken convoy of cars that seemed 10 miles long heading west on I-80. :fear:
Good times though, hopefully next year will be just as fun
