Have not seen it mentioned here on the WSU board yet, but SIU announced that they will be in a Thanksgiving tourney, played on the grounds of Disney World in Orlando. Field includes West Va. (sans Pittsnoggle, thank God), Minnesota, and Virginia Tech. Will be a chance for the Dawgs to make some pre-conference noise.

Do you EVER have anything positive to say? Must be a boring night as usual down in Wheatchita.
Congrats to the Salukis, that is a great field and I wouldn't be surprised if you guys win that tourney. WVU will still be tough, but certainly not anything like what you faced in the NCAAs and Minnesota will be, well, Minnesota, very beatable. Its just too bad that the only time our programs can face the "big boys" are in tourneys like these. I would love to see WVU at Carbondale or Minnesota here at the Phone Booth.

Cold ... can you re-size the picture on the right in your signature and maybe get Koch in the middle of the photo? You could also use just a tad bit of space between photos. If I have to look at the Wichita skyline, I'd appreciate the shot to be pleasing to the eye. That's all.

And since 2003 you now have a fairly tall building, congratulations! Right now our downtown is "booming" with cultural, structural, and residential improvement works. We have a river that runs right along the city and the nearly 150 million dollar Riverwalk project modeled after San Antonio's Riverwalk will spice things up nicely. Because of the success of OldTown (our downtown entertainment district) there has been tremendous demand for urban lofts/apartments downtown. Investors have been pouring in from Minnesota and yes, even Omaha to convert old warehouses into apartments. There is even talk of another "high-rise" building being built for residential purposes only. I had a friend who was trying to get into this new downtown warehouse/loft community and she was willing to pay 135k for a one bedroom. She was informed that the building is full. :noexpression:
It's a great day to be a Shocker or a Wichita downtown developer!

Once the new 200 million dollar downtown arena, the nearly 150 million dollar Riverwalk project, and the 40 million dollar Keeper of the Plains project is finished, things are going to look mighty different in downtown Wichita. New investment dollars have been pouring in like crazy since the arena vote passed.
P.S. We have an apartment building downtown that is nearly 300 feet tall. That has to account for something. :bounceblue:

I am glad downtown Wichita is trying to turn itself around, congrats. Downtown Omaha has had 3 billion in capital invested alone in the past 5 years and 20 billion will be spent over the next 10 years. If you are interested (probably not), United Airlines' magazine devoted an entire spread for the month of May as their "Featured Destination City." :

You are right, your new arena should (hopefully) be a catalyst for new growth downtown. If I remember correctly, the site for the arena is in a pretty blighted area (much like the spot where the Q was built)?
I have been to Wichita many times, OldTown was nice and has a lot of potential. But, outside of downtown, McConnell AFB, and I-35 I have only "passed through."

You are missing the point. Wichita may be the air capitol of the world (that is debatable, at least after the turn of the century) but your GMP and "big business" presence is nowhere close to Omaha's. (Beech/Raytheon is a great company with a huge international presence, but it still doesn't compare to the Union Pacific's, Mutual of Omaha's, ConAgra's, Berkshire Hathaway's, etc of the world at least in terms of $$$
Fortune 500 companies:
Omaha 5 (tied for 15th highest in the country and by far the highest per capita) http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/cities/
Wichita 0
Fortune 1000 companies:
Omaha 8
Wichita 0
You wanted to talk about gross product? Leave the STATES out of it.
GMP:
Omaha $32 Billion
Wichita $20.7 Billion
How about air travel (since Wichita is the air capitol of the world):
Total Passengers -
Omaha Eppley Airfield 4.2 Million
Wichita Mid-Continent 1.5 Million

Those figures are surprising and I don't have time tonight to research them. Koch Industries (located in Wichita) has revenues north of 60 billion a year. I don't believe they are being included in your figures for some reason. GDP/GMP definitions can sometimes be funny...

I think a lot of downtowns would be enhanced if certain organizations would build downtown instead of disgusting, sprawling office parks in the suburbs (which Omaha has way too many of). Here is the link for the GMP figures, to save you research time (http://www.usmayors.org/74thWinterMeeting/metroeconreport_January2006.pdf)
Also, trust me, I am not trying to trash Wichita, I wish you guys all the best and hope the $$$ you are putting in to economic development pans out. I am just somewhat of a city geek and am throwing out figures. Numbers are just that, numbers.
The reason why I threw out air passenger numbers is because it's a good indicator of the overall economic importance of a city (outside of traditional tourist destinations of course), thats all. I am not trying to throw a curve ball or anything. :original:

I can't argue with that, either. Honestly the only true "tourist" destinations in Valley cities are the Omaha Zoo (which is ranked 2nd or 1st, depending on what source you read) behind/ahead of San Diego and the tourism areas around Springfield (Branson and Table Rock Lake). However, I don't think the discussion was about tourism...Most midwestern cities, focus on trying to be centers of commerce and business, which a lot of midwestern cities are very heavy-hitters in (Des Moines - Insurance, Omaha - Telecommunications & Insurance, Wichita - Aerospace, etc, etc...).

During the last 20 years businesses have relocated all along the periphery of the city. That was the trend all across the nation. Everybody wanted to live minutes from their home and the golf course. We have nearly half a dozen major aircraft manufacturing companies along with several banks and major (see Koch) industries located in a radius around the center of Wichita. Before Pizza Hut and Rent-A-Center left Wichita their home offices where in the suburbs as well. Koch Industries is located about 5 miles from WSU which also happens to be about 10 miles from downtown Wichita. Sprawl has killed our city but like most major cities around the U.S. we are moving back downtown.
Your air passenger numbers mean one thing, our airport has been mismanaged and our airfares are so ridiculously high that people will drive to K.C. to save a few hundred dollars. The disparity of our airline traffic is in no way indicative of our comparative economic importance. A 3:1 ratio? Pleeease...
And yes, you are definitely "trying" to trash Wichita and if I had enough time tonight and didn't have a final to study for I would make you eat your words even with the facts being disproportionately in your favor -I'm good like that! :naughty:
P.S. Ever wonder why Koch Industries isn't included in the Forbes 500? Let me give you a hint.. because it's the largest PRIVATELY HELD COMPANY IN AMERICA! I can assure you that whatever economic prowess you think your city enjoys in regards to corporate prosperity, it pales in comparison to Koch's 60+ billion in annual revenue.
And as far as our Zoo is concerned, Sedgwick County has been listed (somewhere) in the top 20 best zoos in the world. And yes, I did see that Omaha's zoo has a highly rated exhibit (In America) but nothing else I uncovered listed the zoo as high as SCZ.

North America's largest cat complex, world's biggest indoor desert, rain forest, swamp, orangutan exhibit, and nocturnal exhibits. The best part, Panda's are on the way.
You could probably interchange the top 5 in the U.S. (San Diego, Omaha, St. Louis, Bronx, Columbus). Wichita, does in fact have a nice zoo, but you will never find it in any "top" lists.
Yes, Koch is a privately owned company, but when you want to talk about "prowess", Koch is a midget compared to Warren Buffett & Berkshire Hathaway, F500 #13 and $82 billion + Buffett's personal wealth of $42 billion (soon to overtake Bill Gates as the worlds wealthiest man, yet certainly doesn't give anything to CU! :ranting:).

You speak of your zoo as the final destination of Christ when I can't locate one single authoritative source that backs your claim up. Oh, save for a little blurb in Readers Digest? You refer to the Koch brothers in Wichita who's combined personal net worth is 24 billion and who own the largest private company in the U.S. with sales of nearly 70 billion as midgets compared to what is virtually a insurance/holding company conglomerate in Berkshire Hathaway at 82 billion? The majority of Warren's net worth is in publicly traded stock, while Charles and David literally privately own a company that could be worth over a 100 billion if sold outright. Do you have any idea what they would be worth if they took Koch Industries public??!! Also, Koch Industries employs nearly 100,000 people worldwide...

One last post from me....
If you don't consider airport passenger figures indicators of economic health & importance of a city, how would you describe it then? These passengers are coming here for a reason and we have established that it is obviously not tourism. Why do airlines like Southwest, Frontier, Northwest, and Midwest Airlines, find the Omaha market highly desirable and plead for terminal expansion (by 2009 we will have a new terminal, increase from 21 to 40 gates) so they can offer more flights/destinations and setup the market as a hub or focus-city (Midwest & Northwest)? Whereas Wichita has to beg and setup a travel bank just to get/retain AirTran, just to have some sort of low-fare presence? Airlines are one of the best examples of market-driven entities, they only go where they know they will make money, otherwise they get out of Dodge in a real hurry. You can blame poor airport management all you want, but if a particular airline (ie Southwest) finds a market they can profit in, believe me, they will enter it.
Lets face it, trying to rank a zoo is next to impossible. All I know is, the Omaha Zoo has several exhibits that are world's largest, which is proof enough. Afterall, "exhibits" are what make up zoos, right?

Can't we all just get along. Wichita and Omaha are both great cities, both better than Evansville. Congrats to SIU on getting in a high caliber tournament, they're the only mid-major in the tourney, and with returning all 5starters, they have a legitimate chance to start the year off right for the valley.
Now Damn-it, no more dead bluejays.

Let me shed some light on the zoo peeing contest. You can't really compare the two zoos as their purposes are fairly different. The Dorley Zoo in Omaha is mainly an exhibit/visitor/tourist type zoo while the Sedgwick Co. Zoo in Wichita has traditionally been a breeding type zoo. They both rank fairly high in their particular areas and are very nice.

This gets funnier by the post. I think the Brookfield Zoo has more than just one "exhibit", if thats what makes a Zoo. Fragile Kingdom, The Seven Seas, Tropic World Asia/Africa, Habitat africa savannah, Salt Creek Wilderness, Wolf Woods, The Swamp, Be a Bird, etc. al.
And we get to check out the Chicago skyline in the process.
Can we get back to the Mickey Mouse Salukis in a good tournament to start the year? How do each of the teams look to fare this year?
"air capital" . . . . if Cold is any indication, that would be HOT air capital!

Once the new 200 million dollar downtown arena, the nearly 150 million dollar Riverwalk project, and the 40 million dollar Keeper of the Plains project is finished, things are going to look mighty different in downtown Wichita.

I do consider airport passenger figures an indicator of economic health but not to the point where I will relate person for person traffic to dollar for dollar economic viability. We must take into consideration various subsidies that each city supports, other competing airports that consumers may choose from. Hey, the leadership in Wichita are aware that our airport is underutilized and we lose a ton of traffic to Kansas City. Things are changing and the Wichita City Council has approved the building of a new 150 million dollar airport terminal to ease congestion and facilitate more traffic. Another sign of improvement is that we were recently ranked in the top 20 of fastest growing airports in the nation. That came as quite a shock to me.

I'm not gonna say that SIU is a lock to win that tournament, but I think they have a pretty good shot. Although many of those teams are from the BCS schools, none of them are what you call top-tier teams. If the they could win the tourney or even make the championship game, it would be a huge shot in the arm for the MVC RPI.

I think these tourneys at the very least can give you a barometer of what you have to work with. It can either be a huge confidence builder for the players or it can zap their confidence in a hurry. I think it is a good tourney for the Dawgs.

Inevitably (sp?) someone will bring up the alaska thing from last year and try to say that SIU will repeat their same fate. I don't think so. As disasterous as Alaska was last year, it may have been a blessing in disquise for this year. That should have been a huge learning experience and a good motivational tool to use in future tournaments, especially with everyone coming back. Don't expect SIU to overlook or lay down for anyone in Disney after what happened last year.

I'm just mad nobody's commented on Carbondale's downtown revitalization!
In hindsight, what happened at the Great Alaska Shootout last year to SIU shouldn't have been a surprise. Take a team with mostly freshman and sophomores and ship them 3,000 miles away to play in a tournament and the result was predictable. Too many people were drinking 44 oz. Saluki Kool-Aids at the time and didn't realize that in the early part of last year there would be growing pains.
Now, if SIU goes to Orlando and lays a big-time egg, then it's open season on the Salukis because while they have just two seniors, this is an experienced team.
It'd be good for the Valley if SIU can perform well there.

Yeah, saw that on a recent flight!!! It was a very complimentary spread.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be able to make the trip to Orlando for this tournament. And, I'm not going to waste one lousy minute scoping out the buildings in the downtown there. My #1 priority will be to attend all of our games while there. After that, it'll be more fun and games at WDW!!! :salukis:  :bounceblue:

The fact is that no Valley city is a tourist destination. If you ask an average person in Chicago, Miami, or Seattle about Omaha, Wichita, or Des Moines, they laugh at you.
We're all inflating the appeal of our cities.
You are right! except for one week of the year, CWS...

I drove through Carbondale the other day. When I saw the sign welcoming me to Carbondale I was shocked, I hadn't realized I was in Illinois. There was a lot more sites to see, a lot more things goin' on and the town looked much cleaner than I expected. Come to find out I was in Carbondale, Kansas.
