View Full Version : Charging the Valley - Too Many Charging Calls?

This is a simple topic, but it sways the outcome of so many games. Are you for all the charging calls in the Valley, or against? I think there are clearly too many of them called. They are called almost 100% even in physical games.

Since this conference is becoming more and more powerful, do we want them to call these things more or less? I seriously doubt there are that many charges called in the likes of the Big 10.

part of the reason so many charges are called in the valley is this league is loaded with blue-collar types who aren't afraid to take a charge.
in bigger leagues, they go for the blocked shot or play no defense at all.

Depends upon the call. I don't recall too many being called wrongly except against WSU. I do recall several flops that were called as charges and several charges that were not called.

I'm all for the Valley calling charging calls when needed if it keeps Funk from using his patented spear move.

Call the game the way the rules say it should be called. If it's a charge, call it. If it isn't, don't. I hate when officials decide to let calls go just because they think they're calling it too much. Leave the fudging w/the rules to the NBA, since we know how much credibility it brings that league...

Joey..come on now. Let's get off this "MVC is the little engine that could" idea with a bunch of gritty, gutty white guys with floorburns. I don't think there is any evidence that players in the MVC take more charges than guys in "bigger leagues".

We disrespect the league with this kind of stuff. That being said, if its a charge, call it. I dont think there is a charge epidemic going around.

I'm with Joey on this one. I swear half the stuff that "the truth hurts" posts on this forum is just this side of garbage.

After watching many games in this past years NCAA tourney, it seems the Big Ten style of officiating doesn't really fly with the Big Dance officials. How many Big Ten schools survived? Illinois who played probably THE most marginal team in the tourney (Air Force), and Ohio State who was crushed in their second game by Georgetown (who UNI played straight up) were the only 2 schools that held up the Big Ten banner...

Sure NCAA tourney games are alot about matchups, but IMO a league's officiating can help prepare teams for what to expect from Big Dance officials.

I'm going to get right to the heart of MetDrakeFan's question: Yes, I think Chris Bryant gets called for too many charges

Ok..couple of things.

A) what does your post have to do with anything regarding the topic? You talk about Big Ten officiating and how the Big Ten did in the NCAA's. What does this have to do with too many charges called in the MVC or the idea that MVC guys take more charges than players in other leagues?

B) Is the Big Ten the only major conference out there?

C) what other things have I posted that are "garbage"? I mean, do you have any examples? Hey, I don't necessarily disagree but I'm just curious what "garbage" you are referring to.

I've found that if you post anything that isn't in line with what the majority beleive, that makes it garbage. God forbid we have more than on opinion on a subject.

So true Dawgie. This is what frustrates me about some MVC fans. We don't like the mid-major label. We want to be considered bigtime. We think we are as good as many BCS teams. We think our players are just as good.

And I agree for the most part. But yet we come back with this obsession over the BCS schools. We love this Cinderella story thing. We use this "we are just little gritty, tough guys who take charges, and dive on the floor" while the "big" schools have all this talent.

No. If you want the same respect act like you belong. Quit obsessing over the BCS schools and what goes on there. Admit/expect that your athletes/players are just as good. Stop the us-against-big brother attitude. It kinda implies that you don't actually THINK you belong.

If you want to be major, act it.

Saying MVC players know who to take a charge isn't a "MVC is the little engine that could" idea.
It shows we have SMART basketball players. Guys who are willing to do what it takes to win a game. I don't think that belittles anybody in our league. And, that might be a reason we keep kicking BCS butt in the NCAA tournament.

If it is a charge call it ie... Creighton v. Miami last whiny statement. (for tonight at least) The no call came from Big east officials if that makes a difference. I do think that sometimes Valley refs do call too many fouls both ways. Let them play a little.

I think it is very simple. If the offensive player charged - you call it. If the defensive player blocked - you call that. Has nothing to do with how many times a charge is called or not call during a game.

Who in the world is Chris Bryant??? Ok, I think I am going to have to get myself a new moniker on here so Drake people will start talking to me again! From now on Drake fans, whenever there is a new Drake poster, you will wonder, "Is this MetDrakeFan?" :original:

Right. To add to that, it also has to do w/the fact that Valley teams play position defense. They aren't necessarily pick-pocketers (some SIU players the most notable exceptions) and there aren't a lot of big shot blockers. But the defense played in this league is as good as almost any league out there. To me, that's as good a reason as any for there being more charges. (And if the defenses are ahead of the offenses too much, maybe we should put the onus on coaches to fix that, not the officials).

Watching the Big East tourney this yr, there was no way that league played better defense than the Valley did. In fact, it wasn't even close. Better athletes, maybe. Taller athletes, in some cases. Better defensive players, no. And comparing them to the Big East isn't a matter of an inferiority complex, just an attempt to put in perspective how good the MVC is right now.

MVC=Top 5 basketball conference. :valley:
