View Full Version : Home Advantage: Floor or Crowd?

There has been talk about 3 game series with a home, away, neutral site format. For example SIU vs UICU: One in Carbondale, one in Champaign, one in Chicago. My question: In that situation, would the unfamiliar surroundings or the partisan fans be the biggest advantage? Or is there really no advantage?

The game WSU played on a "neutral" court against Michigan St. in Detroit was more of a home game for MSU. The fans were primarily from Michigan.
A game in Chicago for SIU against UI would draw more Illinois fans but I would suspect that there would be many that are not die hard fans that would cheer SIU if they were winning over UI. Still it would be a fan advantage for UI.

Maybe but It seems to me that Illinois citizens are like Nebraskans they all like the Fighting Illini.

Well I can say for certain that there are an awful lot of people here in Normal that are UI fans, most of which are bandwagoners. (TOO many people in fact...its pretty sad).
I would bet if SIU played UI in Chicago the majority of the crowd would be wearing orange....and then hopefully be silenced when the Dawgs win.

Yes, there would be a ton of U of I fans at a game in chi. But us Chicago SIU alums(there are a ton of them) have been waiting for a game in chi for a long time. so the siu contingent would be strong. plus i would say some bu/isu alumni from chi would go and root for the dawgs! I think the siu turnout at a game in chi would surprise a lot of people.

Other than maybe California or Texas, Illinois has quite possibly the largest number of D-I programs of any state in the Union, not to mention several that play I-A football. Nebraska has two and only one with pointy ball.
... and if I wanted to be a real jackass, I'd point out that, no, not very many Nebraskans like the Fighting Illini at all. :innocent:

Yeah I reread my post and missed the "are like Nebraskans about Nebraska" but could npt figure out how to edit it. Still most understood what I meant. And even though there are a number of Div. 1 schools in Illinois most fans (even SIU) seem to have some affinity to the orange.

Maybe so, but Illinois is primarly a basketball school. In Nebraska, UNL is primarly a football (and secondarly, baseball) school. Most Husker fans don't pay attention to their own basketball program. Since the move into the Qwest Center, the most Husker fans there's been at any one CU-NU game was maybe 2500. Saying there was 1200 at the game in Omaha this year would likely be extremely generous, IMHO.
That's another reason the game in Lincoln should be interesting next year. Coming off a 30+ year low in attendance and their disasterous offseason, that's a prime opportunity for Creighton fans to dominate a "road" arena.
If you're referring to the handful of fans that root for Nebraska in football, who cares? You see that at every school that doesn't have football.
