"They want a costume that looks more like the WuShock logo: their beloved fisted caricature with wheat sticking out of his head and clenching a wheat stalk in his teeth.

Officials said in a news release they hope a more accurate, professional mascot out on the playing field will give the university a better image.

Wichita State, formerly Fairmont College, is in the heart of Kansas' wheat-growing country. Back in 1904 the team was known as Wheatshockers, an unofficial name that caught on and survived until it was shortened to Shockers, according to the school's Web site.

It was fitting at the time because many football players earned their tuition harvesting, or shocking, wheat during the summer harvest. Early games were played on a stubbled wheat field and pep club members were then called Wheaties."

for those of you keeping score......

A Bluejay fan threw the first "rock' in this thread. Not surprising, IMHO.

Wichita State, formerly Fairmont College.....

Just in case anyone is wondering, the article was a bit misleading.....between Fairmount College and it's days as a state educational institution (WSU), it was known as the University of Wichita.

1895 - Fairmount College
1926 - University of Wichita
1964 - Wichita State University
