Is on the hill for the Mets vs Puerto Rico, he started the 3rd down 1-0, got the 1st out on a 5-3, then a 2B by Bernie Williams so far...Wearing #66 I think

Here is a clip from a paper about Pelfrey's outing:

Their faith in Wagner is equal to the enthusiasm about Mike Pelfrey's future, which was once again on display Sunday.

The 6-foot-7 right-hander threw two scoreless innings against Puerto Rico, a debut that allowed Met fans to rightfully project the kid at Shea sometime in 2006.

Not only was Pelfrey a match for the Puerto Ricans' best hitters, he was poised in front of an ESPN audience, as well. There was only one fluttering of Pelfrey's nerves, facing Williams -- "I started thinking, 'Wow, I grew up watching that guy,' before I said, 'Enough of that' but still allowing a double to right -- otherwise, the Mets had another reason to believe their $3.7 million investment may pay dividends sooner than later.

Even though Pelfrey is slated to begin the season at Class A, Randolph said: "You have to like what you see. With his potential, if he comes quick, he could help us. I'm not counting on it, but ideally, those are the guys that come up quick."

If I could remove my CU hat and put on my Mets hat for a moment... Man am I excited to see this kid in the Mets organization. I had followed him somewhat in college and was pretty excited when the Mets drafted him, and everything I have read/heard about him since has only served to add to that excitement.

Everything points to him being up to Shea by mid 2007 at the latest, although with the lack of depth in the Mets starters, I wouldn't be surprised to see him up for the stretch run this year. Of course the Mets will probably trade him to Tampa by then...

In case anybody is interested, Mike has been named the opening day starter for the St. Lucie Mets tonight at 6 PM Central against the Vero Beach Dodgers. Here is an exerpt from the Port St Lucie paper:

Carter's first task might have been the easiest — name Mike Pelfrey the opening day starter. The ninth pick overall, Pelfrey was considered the top pitching prospect in the 2005 First-Year Players Draft after coming out of Wichita State University.

"He's impressive," Carter said. "He's a guy that's got a good live fastball and keeps the ball down in the zone. He does a lot of good things. He loves to pitch inside, which is a big plus for a young kid.

"He might be in the big leagues by the end of the year."

He will team with Cuban defector Alay Soler, another pitching prospect. Soler, 26, ranked as the seventh best prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America.

"Those guys are going to get every chance to prove themselves," Carter said. "They'll probably move up the ladder rather quickly."

that kid in your avator...

If shorts get any bigger kids are going to be tripping on them. Look at how close to the floor those are.

Yeah, I noticed that also. Then again, I don't care what kind of shorts he wears as long as he is a Shocker come next Fall. The kid, OJ Avworo, is nails and he carries a 4.2 GPA. Those are the kinds of kids I like to see the Shox go after. The problem is, he is also thinking of going Ivy League, which I don't want to see.

It sounds like he'll stay with St. Lucie until the weather warms up, at that point he'll be called up to AA Binghampton. From all I've heard the Mets are pretty much fast-tracking him to the bigs. Considering that pitching coach Rick Peterson has said Pelfrey seems like the type who could be brought up quickly, a la the big 3 from his Oakland days, it wouldn't surprise me to see him at Shea by the end of the year.

Mike was promoted to AA this week and pitched for Binghamton (AA) against Erie tonight. Mike Started and went 5 2/3 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8. Great job by Big Mike.

With Pedro possibly going to the DL, there is talk that Big Mike will get a start Friday or Saturday for the big club. Supposedly, the Mets have informed MLB that Pelfrey will not be available for the All-Star Futures game due to a pending MLB call-up. Stay tuned.

Pelfrey to pitch 2nd game of Saturday double-header:

Jose Lima will start today's series opener in the slot vacated by demoted Alay Soler, while John Maine and Pelfrey start tomorrow's doubleheader, tentatively in that order. The Mets also summoned Double-A Binghamton closer Henry Owens, after an improper rules interpretation resulted in Heath Bell wasting a trip from Triple-A Norfolk.

"If we sensed that there was any kind of emergency or anything, without a doubt I would have taken the ball," Martinez said. "Even my own teammates pulled me aside and said, ‘Let's play it safe. We need you for the long haul. We need you to be healthy and the way you're capable of being.' Sometimes you have to listen. There's no rush right now."

The 22-year-old Pelfrey - who signed in January - will make his major-league debut one year and 31 days after being selected with the ninth pick in the 2005 draft. That's the third-fastest promotion of any college pitcher taken in the top 10 in the past five years - behind only the Cubs' Mark Prior and Tigers' Justin Verlander.

The 6-7 righthander regularly hit 96 mph on a radar gun during his last outing Saturday with Binghamton, when he limited Toronto's affiliate to one run and two hits while striking out 11 and walking three in seven innings.

"the young phenom out of Wichita State University. But at the same time, it probably was just right for a star in the making."

"When Pelfrey threw it, most of the 41,477 in attendance at Shea Stadium stood in anticipation, the same way they had stood in ovation when he walked from the bullpen before his start, and the same way they stood in appreciation when he was introduced as the Mets' starting pitcher. His family and friends -- including his mom and dad, his two brothers, his grandfather, his nephews, his girlfriend and a friend from Wichita State -- were there to see it as well.

The first pitch exploded out of his hand and reached a velocity of 96 mph."

"But Pelfrey is the chosen one.

Lo Duca likens him to Darren Dreifort, whom he caught with the Dodgers. That may not sound like much, but Dreifort, who like Pelfrey pitched at Wichita State and attended Kansas' Wichita Heights High, had one of the nastiest sinking fastballs in the majors before arm problems wrecked his career."

You know.....In case they're out there reading this, I'm going to opine that it would be nice of the MVC offices to post a story about this.

If they can write about a Korver family reunion........what's wrong with publishing something about a Valley alumnus??

I know they've done it before.
