Just thought some would be interested in this. It was posted on Shockernet.
Mekel makes plans -- Israeli guard Gal Mekel said he plans to arrive in Wichita on Aug. 18. He is skipping the Adidas Superstar Camp later this month in Germany, a gathering of Europe's top young players.
"It's something I really want to be there for, but Wichita is more important to me," Mekel said. "Wichita is first place in my priority."
Mekel said he does not think Israel's conflict with Hezbollah will stop him from leaving the country. He is concerned about family in Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, which is in the middle of the fighting.
"I live in Tel Aviv, and the action is not here and hopefully it will not be," Mekel said. "It's very tough for all the people in Israel."
WSU begins practice for its exhibition trip to Canada on Aug. 19.

Joey, what are they doing about deer control efforts during the off-season?
We've all been enduring an agonizing wait for the rest of that story.....

I think this thread brings Mekel that much closer as WSU's Shaw.

I read yesterday where the new AD took an early morning jog around campus and saw two deer but they backed down in deference!:original: They know he means business!
I'm sorry ... folks in Wichita are gonna have to endure Mekel/Spinnelli/LSU/2-for-1/Turgeon's new gardner stories for a while until I can get to the bottom of the deer problem in Carbondale.
I'm working as hard as I can on it.

He can hardly get called up since he's deferring his initial military service (presumably till he completes college.)

I would imagine he has other reasons to leave Israel early...Not exactly a cozy place these days.
Scud missles or Wichita? :innocent: It's a tough one, but I think Wichita inches out current-state Israel, barely.

This is actually significant. Mekel was scheduled to play in an all-Euro championship in Berlin that ran through late August.
WSU gets 10 days of early practice for the Canada exhibition. Mekel would have missed all but 2 or 3 days of that had he played in Berlin. Mekel chose to skip the Euro championships to get the full practice time with WSU.
On a more somber note, Mekel is a recognized person in Europe. He's a point of pride for Israeli athletics. Mekel is probably a lot safer in the middle of the USA than in Berlin.
Mekel may have been a Hezbollah target in Berlin.

I hope that when (not if) he becomes a target of opposing Valley fans, they will at least keep their comments classy.
This league can't afford any negative publicity resulting from pre-game, post-game, or extra-curricular incidents if it wants to keep making inroads towards elite status.
We don't need anything similar to the "Rolan the Felon" posters displayed by Creighton fans at the MVC tournament a few years ago. By all accounts, this is a good kid without any known baggage.

Don't worry Outpost, if you are worried about anti-semitic jokes, I don't suspect you'll hear many.
The harassment that Mekel may receive will probably be directed at the fact his first name is "Gal", rather than his religion.

Who knows? Maybe Gal means "well hung" in Hebrew?

I suppose it could also mean "Creighton's and SIU's biitch"
Since I don't speak Hebrew (or Yiddish for that matter), I really don't care what it means in those languages. I do know what it means in English though.

If by "Creighton's biitch", you mean the team that's finished higher in the Valley standings the last 3 seasons and has done more in the NCAA tourney in their first attempt in 15 years than Creighton has done in their "storied" history during the same time frame...... you seriously need to go to prison or something to realign your definition of the word "biitch."

VERY ironic with your propensity to call people clueless and morons and whatnot, but whatever drives the nails in your coffin.

Hey posters, didn't mean to start anything, I think we all need to rise above the name calling. I apologize for any digs at Creighton here, just happened to recall posters and insults directed towards Rolan Roberts of SIU during the MVC tournament. Do we really want to be like this if we were in the nation's (or the region's) eye?
I merely expressed a hope that any heckling in the coming months (and years) is kept at a classy level. By all of us.
Hell, even the "classy" fans of Duke, KU, etc. have documented histories of tastelessness. They'll deny it, of course. And the U. of Missouri is probably the worst in the region as far as I've heard, seen and/or experienced.
And a few Providence fans were a little bit too "east coast" in their treatment of our players two years ago at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
I know that if I got a little worked up and tried to get racial, or crass, or vulgar during any of our games, I would be chastised by my wife. She is at my side for virtually every Shocker basketball game we attend.
I get a longer leash during baseball season, but never like to draw attention to myself with an act of classlessness towards the other team.

we're training one particularly onery herd for the visit from the shockers.
they'll be let loose outside the hampton inn the night before the game.

I will guess Mekel is a nice guy who will not deserve (or even understand) many of the Creighton fans' criticisms when playing in Nebraska. Or he might get a big laugh at the thought that Creighton fans think a team that just went to the Sweet 16 needs a nonstarting freshman to be the star. (I'm sure he will think CU fans are completely clueless about basketball.)
I hope CU fans worry about Gay Mekel and ignore Kyle Wilson, Karon Bradley, Sean, PJ, Matt, PT, etc. CU fans remember that none of the returning WSU players is any good. WSU is a very bad team and can be safely overlooked.
