View Full Version : Elgin Response to WSU\Syracuse

This was posted in another thread but it has been threadjacked. No pissing matches in this one please.
Schaus said WSU contacted every major Division I school with the offer of a home-and-home series. When that was unsuccessful, WSU's best move, he said, was to accept the guarantee game and hope it pays off in March. WSU, and other Missouri Valley Conference schools, try to avoid being bought for a one-game deal which heavily favors the home team. MVC schools say they are worthy of home-and-home series with other top schools. The reality is those series are difficult to find.
"I think this is an appropriate step for them at this stage of the summer," Valley commissioner Doug Elgin said. "Wichita State, Creighton and Southern Illinois have special problems, because there are no secrets. Some of our programs can't go on the road and start a home-and-home series against a comparable opponent. It's been a rough summer for (WSU coach) Mark Turgeon and Jim Schaus."
Schaus and Elgin said the game may be scheduled too late for a spot on national cable. It's a heavy college football day, with championship games in the ACC and Big 12 on ABC and two Big East football games scheduled for the ESPN networks. CBS has the SEC football championship.
"You're always going to try," Schaus said. "You always hope there might be a possibility."

No TV make this a very bad deal sorry.
I can see the we need to play top competition argument. I can even see the if we didn't play SYracuse it would have been a home game vs creampuff U.
I just can't see any reason to take a December game AT Syracuse with no TV.

The no TV thing does put a sour note on it.
But, I'm willing to still bet it will be at least locally televised in New York as well as in Kansas.
The "no TV" thing isn't final yet either, according to the article.
I'd like to think that if both teams are doing well and ranked, there'd be a strong chance some sports outlet would pick the game up.

I hope so it is a game I would certainly watch.

I think that there' a very good chance that Bruce Haertl and Craig Steven will be bringing KWCH-12 coverage to us that night.
And with the proliferation of cable TV coverage, someone like CSTV might be a good alternative.
Fox sports has a Valley contract, and I'm not sure if I remember ever seeing a college football championship game on Fox.
I think they have a contract with the Pac 10, though, so not sure how the times would coincide.

I also believe ESPN2 doesn't usually air the high profile football championships, and they might be interested in putting a little something on to draw in some fans. Hopefully Syracuse will be flexible with the start time of the game in order to get it televised. This is definitely the time for WSU to use the Sweet 16 card to get on a national network.

Thanks for your confidence in our efforts, UE-BBALL#1.
And I know it's early, but best of luck to the Aces in the upcoming season.

Don't be surprised if we don't see a couple more of these deals before all Valley teams release their schedules.
It's ugly, this scheduling thing.
Nobody wants to play us.

Which is meaningless in this case, because regional and national TV coverage of regular season collegiate sports is governed by the home team's conference's contracts.
And I believe the Big East's main TV partner is ESPN. They may have a secondary deal with Fox Sports as well, but the Valley's contract with Fox Sports doesn't matter at all.

Definitely, at Syracuse would be an ESPN game, meaning potentially on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC. I know that ABC does football games that day, and I'm thinking ESPN might do one also. I would still say there is a good chance for the schools to work this out to be on tv and would think both would do anything in their power to work it out. You have an upstart team from the MVC fresh off a Sweet 16 run against a perenially contender in the Big East who should be fairly loaded once again. There is no possible way ESPN has better things to schedule, and a game on a Saturday can easily be moved to an afternoon start or an early evening start, which while not a primetime spot, would be well worth the investment of going to the cuse for a game. As much as we have all wished the MVC has gotten more tv games over the years, hopefully (and most likely) everyone at WSU and in the MVC office are doing everything they can to get this set up.

This is in the peak of football season, in order for teh game to be televised, it would have to work around football and SportCenter. I strongly doubt it will work. I would love to see the game, but oh well.

Could also be a 10 or 11:00 pm game...maybe after the football wrap-up.

Or 10 or 11 am........before all the prime time football slots are clogged.

I thought I saw that this was on football championship weekend, which means there are only a handful of games. Maybe I'm wrong.
