U.S. District Judge Wesley Brown sentenced Shane Hawkins, a former assistant coach, to three years probation and fined him $1,500.

Hawkins pleaded guilty to one count of perjury to a grand jury investigating the case. Hawkins worked as men's assistant basketball coach at the Great Bend college from August 1999 through June 2001. In a plea agreement, Hawkins admitted he was lying when he told the grand jury that student athletes received work-study funds for work they actually performed when he knew that was not true.

Nice thread you got started here. Are you trying to get into a flaming war with the Saluki faithful now. JEESH!!

IMHO, Hawkins was just a secondary party to the crime. Unfortunate that it will follow him around for awhile.

He was definitely not the main perpetrator, and I can somewhat understand his initial response. It's difficult to just throw out loyalty to someone who gave you a chance and a start in your career.

Personally, I wish him the best, and hope he recovers from it. It will take time.

The Jayhawk league is not clean, far from it.

Hawk took a high school head coaching job in southern Illinois earlier this summer and he'll get past this rough spot.

Glad to hear this news, Dawgfan. Thanks for the update.

JT,

News is news. Don't shoot the messenger. IMHO, Ryan Wolf is a slimeball and got off easy. And yes, the Jayhawk League has been dirty for a long time. Feel better?

The topic is about Shane Hawkins, not me. Attempting to divert the topic is considered threadjacking.

Typical WSU fan...Hawkins sentenced to three years....implies sentenced to prison...reality...sentenced to probation....not prison...pretty misleading header...you must work for Fox news......

I think we all need to chill. He was just posting facts about a former SIU assistant. It is okay guys. At least it isn't about SIU doing a one and done with 'Cuse (sorry had to through that in as a joke).:salukis: :shockers: :valley:

I don't want to get too involved with this argument, but I will agree w/ dogdays on this one. The way the header was drafted does seem to be a deliberate attempt to mislead/incite.

This board is threatening to

I've got your back, DaShox. I don't believe that any malevolence was intended.

If it makes everyone feel better, I heard the news late last night, saw it in our paper, and could have easily posted it myself earlier this morning. I could've easily been the target that DaShox is right now.

It was inevitable that someone was going to put it out here, so let's cut the guy some slack.

The title of the thread should have said "Former Saluki Hawkins gets probation". Would have been more true and potentially less inflammatory.

That's being said, I'm cool with this news being posted. It happened. Where's Wichita? In the state where the trouble took place. Of course those guys are going to see it.

Let's get some thicker skins and quit looking for reasons to start bashing each other.:valley:

Joey -- I've only been on this board since March but one thing I have learned -- no one seems to NEED a reason to start bashing someone else. That seems to be the MO of the off-season poster here.

I didn't take any offense by the post from DaShox. Facts are what they are. I'm sorry for the fact that Hawkins is an ex-player and coach for us and has those ties, but luckily those ties only.

No reasonable discussion can be had on this board anymore. It's pretty juvenile.
I hate to say this, because I have plenty of friends on this board from Wichita and Omaha, but I'm about to put both cities on the ignore list until the season starts.
I can see some of this ripping when there are games being played and the season is unfolding but in August? It's gone crazy.

I understand how you feel Joey. The Wichita/Omaha thing has gone on way too long and been rehashed way too many times. Hopefully it gets toned down a bit. It'll never go away, but if we didn't have to read it in every thread it might not seem so bad.

I talk a good game, but the Shocker/Bluejay slamfest this summer has many of the same qualities as a Mike Tyson fight or a car wreck ... it's hard not to gawk.

Keep fighting the good fight, SubGod22 ... I'll be peeking over the fence.
