Maryland Announces 2006-07 Men's Basketball Schedule

Terps face 13 opponents that reached postseason; 13 games on national TV

Aug. 17, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's basketball team will open a strong 2006-07 regular-season schedule by hosting the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic at Comcast Center on Nov. 7 and 8, starting a campaign that will include at least 13 opponents that reached the postseason a year ago.

Maryland will play 13 times on national television in 2006-07 in games that will be broadcast over the ESPN family of networks, on Fox Sports Net or on ABC. The Terrapins have a Saturday afternoon matchup at Comcast Center on March 3 with NC State that will be aired on ABC.

"The games start early this year with the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic," said Gary Williams, who will coach his alma mater for the 18th season. "That leads us into the ACC/Big 10 Challenge and the BB&T Classic. We also play an early-season game with Boston College.

"It's a tough schedule early this year and hopefully that will prepare us for the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule," said Williams.

Maryland will be the host to one of four regionals in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic, with the Terps facing Hampton at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7. New Orleans and Vermont will play in the opening game that day.

The winner of the College Park Regional will advance to Madison Square Garden on Nov. 16 and 17 for the championship rounds of the tournament. Michigan State and Texas, each of which were in the postseason last year, join Saint John's as regional hosts of the 16-team tournament.

Maryland will play at Illinois on Nov. 28 in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, then will turn around and face Notre Dame at Verizon Center on Dec. 3 in the BB&T Classic. The Terrapins open their ACC slate on Dec. 10 at Boston College in a game to be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.

The Terrapins will have a seven-game homestand from a Dec. 13 date with UMKC through Jan. 13 when they host Clemson.

The Terps will open the season with a pair of exhibition games at home. Maryland will play Division II California University of Pennsylvania on Nov. 1 and will host a Canadian squad on Nov. 4.

In its 16-game ACC schedule, the Terrapins have home-and-home matchups with Duke, Virginia, Clemson, Florida State and NC State. In conference games at home, the Terps will also play Miami, Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Maryland will play its only regular-season league meetings against Boston College, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest on the road.

Uh, Mr. Williams, it's kind of hard to take you seriously when you complain about the Valley getting too many bids, offer to play Valley teams if they'd only call, and then schedule UMKC.

I'm almost at a loss for words to describe the irony of UMKC on that schedule.

I count 16 OOC games. 4 are neutral court games. 1 is away. 11 are at home.

Their 11 home games consist of Hampton, Vermont or New Orleans, Florida A&M, Winthrop, High Point, Fordham, Missouri Kansas City, American, Mt. St Marys, Siena, and Iona

Their 1 road game is against an Illannoy team with an equally weak schedule(not this weak though I don't think).

3 neutral games in NYC against indeterminate opponents, and 1 neutral court game that might as well be a home game in DC against Notre Dame.

Sorry to tell you, Mr. Williams...your schedule is pathetically weak once again. And I mean it...that is a completely pathetic schedule. I scoffed at Illannoy, then you come out with this...this utter piece of garbage. I hope you lose to Hampton and then Vermont. That way your chance of quality BCS games that you cleverly protected yourselves so you'd get to wont come to pass.

I'm glad GW didn't do his tour of the Valley, our RPIs would of suffered.

The real question is whether any national media will call him out on this. If certain individuals from a certain midwestern conference fan-base e-mailed certain national sportswriters, there may be some follow up. What a weasel.

I might be able to resurrect an e-mail address for the snake.

Maybe it might be better to skip him and send it to his Athletic Director.

I'm sure that some sort of creativity can be used to expose him. Maybe even sending a quick note to ESPN might generate a little unwanted publicity for him.

Sent this to ESPN. Might be fun and interesting to inundate ESPN with a few comments similar to this (I sent the following to ESPN.com):

I am a fan of the Missouri Valley Conference. Remember Maryland Coach Gary Williams disappointment over not being invited to the NCAA's last season? I believe he had called out the MVC as getting too many teams. But after several MVC schools approached him about scheduling, we find that once again, Gary has ducked out on scheduling games against our member institutions. Many of us think that he should be called out for this. MVC members won't forget this soon.

If anyone wants to start an "e-letter" writing campaign, here are the Gary Williams articles you can reference:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/04/AR2006030401283.html

"Any major coach hiding behind that notion that we have cracked the code, tell that coach to come play our teams and see how overrated we are," Elgin said. "That notion that we have somehow outsmarted the system is a bunch of crap. . . . It's easy to make those statements when you're not willing to back it up."

In response, Maryland Coach Gary Williams said: "They haven't been banging down anyone's door in the ACC to play. The phone works both ways, last time I checked."

MVC vs. Maryland: The Missouri Valley Conference isn't letting Gary Williams off the hook. More than half the schools in the league have called the Maryland offices to schedule a home-and-home series with the Terps in response to Williams' tough-talking quotes earlier this month in the Washington Post. Love it.

And we know every single MVC team called and asked about a game. That road goes both ways. Regardless of what MVC coaches tell you, they aren't always dying to play BCS teams on the road.

Exactly, the expectation was that Maryland would actually play a road game against an MVC team. In any event, it is not going to happen and probably never will happen. We will just have to listen to Williams run his mouth should Maryland find itself on the bubble again.

The really sad thing is the only reason they are playing that game is because of the ACC-BT challenge. ESPN told them they had to go on the road this year.

Dude, just give up. Every time you've come here to try to bash the conference, you end up as just another uninformed Bristol Inhaler. You're out of your league. Maybe Gary has a home for wayward boys where you can live or something.

If Maryland loses in its first two games against Hampton or Vermont(hopefully both), Illannoy will be it's only quality OOC opponent.

I, too, hope the Hiding Illini whoop em up and down. Because if GW and the Turdipans miss the tourney again, they only have themselves to blame.

I also might be wrong, but going .500 in the ACC(very possible) combined with that OOC schedule...I am not sure Maryland would even be NIT worthy.

It's pathetic.

Sweet mother of mercy...Maryland's exceptionally weak NC schedule makes even the Valley's worst NC sched look pretty darn impressive. I swear Gary Williams has completely lost any small amount of credibility he once had. WOW! does their NCS blow!!!! Yeah, real big suprise that he declined playing MVC schools.

Gary Williams
Head Men's Basketball Coach
University of Maryland

Dear Gary,

Several months ago, I watched an interview in which you criticized the NCAA BB Selection Committee for omitting your team from the 64 (65) team NCAA tournament. You specifically called out schools from the Missouri Valley Conference as getting too many bids to the dance.

Subsequently you were contacted by several MVC schools who were interested in scheduling with the University of Maryland. Now your schedule has been released, and several MVC fans besides myself have noticed that the oversight in scheduling some of the better MVC schools continues.

To help remind you of this oversight, here is evidence of such contact from a reliable source, Greg Doyel and CBS Sportsline:

http://sportsline.com/columns/weblogs/entry/8450/032006

"MVC vs. Maryland: The Missouri Valley Conference isn't letting Gary Williams off the hook. More than half the schools in the league have called the Maryland offices to schedule a home-and-home series with the Terps in response to Williams' tough-talking quotes earlier this month in the Washington Post. I don't think I'd have much difficulty in finding other sources besides this one.

Suffice it to say that the offer still stands from the Valley's corner. We're still waiting on your return call, Gary.

Sincerely -

[outpost]
Lifelong fan of College Hoops

The reply, if it comes, should be interesting.

I went to the Maryland board to quiz them on this situation, but their board is a wreck since they combine all sports and non-sports-related talk on one forum.
I still may post something later, after I'm registered.
