View Full Version : 2 Nebraska recruits ineligible

Nebraska's new basketball coach announced that two recruits may not be academically eligible. Both were Spinelli recruits from prep schools back East. Neither has been cleared and Sadler is worried. Couple that with Spinelli's other "biggest get" this year (Soda), and you have three recruits in one year failing to pass NCAA clearinghouse - all Spinelli recruits, and all from East Coast prep schools. With a few exceptions - and there have been a couple of good ones, the track record of Spinelli recruits at Nebraska just hasn't been very good. I hope you do better, but I wouldn't get too excited about them until they a) qualify, b) show up at school; and c) are still there after their sophomore year.

Spinelli may be recruiting them, but it's up to them to go to class.
I think coach Turgeon and staff have it all in the right perspective.
But thanks for your concern.

and atm I believe WSU is a more attractive option for recruits, helping to get recruits that are more likely to make it to school.

Simple answer:
Turgeon is not Collier. If Spinelli tries to bring in questionable kids, MT will not allow it, whereas it appears Collier was so desperate for success that he did allow it. And Mekel has a) qualified, and b) showed up at school so Spinelli is 1 for 1 at WSU. Sorry to disappoint you, I know BJ fans want nothing more than for Spin and WSU to fail, but it ain't gonna happen.

This has been brought up before; however, Turgeon's track record leads me to believe that this won't be a big issue. Even if the coaching staff takes a "flyer" on a kid because of his talent, I think the quality of the kids in Turgeon's program now will help that kid succeed if he ends up qualifying. That being said, if the kid becomes a problem he won't be around long anyway just like Jared Young last year.

Steve Alford is doing the same thing at Iowa. Two of his recruits have been declared academically ineligible this summer.

Jays fans are still 100% certain Spinelli will be the next coach at Nebraska.... Their inside information told them so...
Now that they were wrong, quickly change the subject and find something bad about Spinelli's past.... Too bad the assistants aren't the ones with the final say on who's in and who's out. WSU has one of the top graduation rates in the nation when it comes to D1 public schools, I'm not concerned in the least.

Wrong, again. Other than those here looking to have a little fun with you all. At least those around these parts knew that Stevie P. was far from happy about Spinelli's recruits. When Spinelli took the job with WSU, two things were known at NU. Collier was either gone at the end of the coming year or he would get the AD job at Butler. Spinelli was not going to get a sniff at the Head Coaching job at NU.

Spinelli's first Shocker recruit has shown up in Wichita, is qualified, is enrolled, and can speak several languages. He might not be around after his sophomore year only because he has moved on and not just moved out.

For reasons not important to this discussion, I had cause to contact Coach Alford a few weeks ago (at his request). I left a total of 6 messages on his cell phone and he never returned my call.
Coach, if you're out there, you better get a hold of me or you might just find yourself with an entire new list of "friends". :naughty:

And Tommy Lee had to deal with this distraction as his tutor:

The thing is, these guys weren't even at NU to make the grades. They didn't qualify because of high school/prep school grades, one of them going through TWO prep schools. If you can't qualify after going through two preps, maybe that should tell you that you aren't a person that should be playing intercollegiate athletics.

Please oh please don't turn this into a Wichita vs. Omaha thing. My comment was only based on WuDrWu's reference of "friends"
All I was refering to was posting his personal cell phone number here.....not that I would do that. Even if I was mean, I would never go to the Iowa board after a tough loss and do that either.
I have a least some integrity.

The NCAA is cracking down big time on Prep School recruits. I think 2-3 years ago, those kids would have qualified and would play in the Big 12 or MVC.

They would have played for Bob Huggins.

About the Spinelli thing:
When Collier was in contention for the Butler AD job I had absolutely not a single thought that Spin was even welcome in the city limits of Lincoln, let alone being considered for the HC job at UNL.
CU fans came on this board swearing that Spin was hired to be the next coach after Collier and would be hired by Pederson. Then they started linking Nebraska news clips that supported that theory.
I went to Bluejay Cafe to see what was going on there. More links to news stories and more speculation that Pederson was going to hire Spin. I was still skeptical because Spin basically gave UNL an obscene gesture by taking a pay cut to leave the B12 for the MVC.
So I went to UNL basketball boards. More speculation that Spin was going to be the hire. Didn't know it at the time, but some of those posts on UNL's boards were from CU fans.
Back to Bluejay Cafe looking for info and found a thread with a lot of UNL posters. I trotted out the CU theory that Spin could be the hire and the UNL fans jumped me big time.
That resulted in a post on BlueJay Cafe that went something like this (from a CU fan). "I can't believe the hottest topic here is a WSU fan arguing with UNL fans".
Here's the really odd thing about the WSU/UNL argument in the Cafe. I was arguing that UNL would hire Spinelli, which I never believed. The UNL fans were arguing that UNL would never hire Spinelli. At the time they had no reason to believe Spin would not be the hire and Spin actually appeared on some "top 5" lists for the UNL job while the "discussion" was going on.
I would like to thank CU and the Bluejay Cafe for allowing me the opportunity to get into a discussion with some UNL fans and ask them, "Are you actually considering hiring an assistant coach from WSU for your head coach"? I loved that moment The UNL fans didn't.

So wait, let me get this straight:
CU fans were all over Vallytalk, talking about WSU related things.
CU fans were all over their own website, Bluejay cafe, talking about WSU related things.
CU fans were all over UNL's website, spewing WSU related things.
And, as evidenced by LincolnJay's post today, CU fans are reading Shockernet, a forum devoted to WSU related things.
I started the Blue gnat joke as just that, a joke.
But this is getting scary. The level of stalker-tude some BlueJay fans are demonstrating would be worthy of a restraining order in some circumstances.
Talk about obsession.

Your nickname for Spinelli could not be more appropirate. In the next few years there will be plenty of "Spin"ning coming out of Wichita to explain the string of great recruits from various prep schools who don't qualify. I liken Spin to the former coach of Colorado and Wasingtion, Rick Neuheisel. In time, you will understand the similarities.

Hmmm. Case in point
p.s. Neuheisel coached the Huskies to a #4 in the nation finish.
I'll take that.

I agree. Last night there was a woman following me around wearing a well-worn Creighton t-shirt. Scary thing about it all was.....I didn't have a shred of WSU gear on (how could she know!!?!?!?!?).

I've admittedly been there before myself, Jayball.
And that was to wish you BJ fans good luck in the post-season.
Nothing obsessive, compulsive or disrespectful on there from me. Just kind words, even when referring to that........um......NIT.
Just be mindful about stereotyping.

I meant it in the context the thread I specified, where a trolling CU fan sees posts on Shockernet and starts a thread on Valleytalk about them.
I've never seen a game at the Qwest, but I'm guessing it smells just like...

Hey Outpost, I just garnered a little more respect for you. Everyone should be lucky enough to marry a Creighton alumnae. Your wife must be both intelligent and beautiful. Congratulations on marrying up!

Sorry to dash your vision, Double-Jay. But my wife of nearly 18 years is a WSU alum.
One thing I can agree with you on. She is every bit as intelligent as you thought she was.
And I wasn't all that surprised at seeing the Creighton shirt. The near-encounter was during a meeting at our Catholic church.
