Kobby Acquah

Posted: Tue Aug 22, 2006 10:14 pm Post subject: Kobby Facts

Played in Southern Intercollegiette Athletic Conference representing basically African- America institutions.
3.63 GPA in engineering

He's a native of Ghana

He was listed as a Junior in A-CU roster last year--I have a feeling maybe he's
a Senior academically but still has 2 years basketball eligibility--

Might not be much more than a practice body but 7-1 is 7-1.

If he turns out to be an assest or not you can look at it this way........he adds another 5 fouls to give!!

By the end of Keita's senior year of high school, he was listed in the top 150-200 prospects in the country by some "experts". He had plenty of offers out of high school, including several MVC schools. Not sure where your statement is coming from.

Wrong again. He saw the court last wednesday--and liked it. Best quote of the day: "Ahha! It is so magnificently buuuteefull! So when do I get to have my photo taken with the leetle dwarf man coach from that State of Missouri college? That's the only reason I transfered, don't you know?"

I agree he might not see the floor again after the Washington game.

Under normal circumstances, transfers from four-year colleges must sit out one year. However, Acquah transferred under the NCAA's "Discontinued Academic Program Exception." An engineering major, his program was dropped at Clark Atlanta.

Pardon my ignorance, but does SIU have an engineering program that would make it worth his while to move across the country for one year of schooling?

The way I understand it, his previous school dropped their engineering program. This is also the reason he is eligible immediately....

yah, they do...their engineering, although not U of I, is one of the best in the country.

If he can give us 5 minutes a game and swat a couple of shots he's worth the risk.
We're such an offensive juggernaut anyway, we don't need anyone else to score!

Don't know squat about this kid but if you are 7'1 and can't get a ride somewhere, you must be a totally clumsy oaf who will have Mullins passes bouncing off of your face.

I will predict this guy will have trouble getting 5 minutes for the whole season.

Bradley's Heemskirk with less talent comes to mind.

It's a little late for any schools to have scholy's for the upcoming season available. Nobody knows, he may do quite nicely.

If he can work hard in practice and make Falker, Foster, Boyle, Shaw better players than he is worth the risk, which by the way is nothing. He is a walk on.

I'll post my "clumbsy oaf report for you" after a few practices. I'd take him if he could block just ONE shot to help us win against the Jays and the juggernaut Shocks this season

he maybe an "oaf" as all you say. and he maybe a walk on. BUT! You can't teach 7'-1". If he even develops a small amount of skill, he could be a nice addition considering the state of most MVC centers. We don't have any. POB left. The only true center in the league. Most others who play that position, are much better suited at power forward. His size alone is worth the risk. Especially if it doesn't cost the school a scholly. Don't be surprised if he becomes part of the regular rotation. Remember SIU used Austin Brooks in regulary last year, and he was also a walk on. It takes lots of body's to run SIU's defense all game at that high of energy. Guesses are, he'll see some playing time.

My guess is he won't see playing time, but if he blocks one shot or causes havoc on one inbounds play, it's gravy. He's a walk on with a desire to get an engineering degree.

In 55 games played the last two years Acquah had 102 turn overs for an average of 1.85 turnovers per game (26.5 minutes per game)

In 30 games last year Anthony Toliver had 58 turn overs for 1.93 turn overs per game (28.7 turn overs per game)

Better take care of your own clumbsy oaf before commenting on others dumbjay

Yeah - I'm sure the competition was fierce too.

Seriously though, if he can get any minutes and block a shot or two then kudos. If nothing else he can give you a few fouls.

Me thinks that we are experiencing the old "whistling past the graveyard" phenomenon from some rivals. Course we don't need a 7+ footer to beat Creighton, the Running Runts have done just fine, thank you!:innocent:

I don't care who says what, a 7-1 guy in the middle can alter some crap!:fear:

If he's on the floor - he can also really mess up your defense if he is out of position.

08-24-2006, 12:09 AM
AceDad, I'm with you 100% on this. There are better ways to describe the limitations that make a player a walkon instead of a schollie player.

This especially applies to walkons who are paying their own way and making huge sacrifices to be primarily practice players.

"May have trouble adjusting to the quickness and pace of upper-level D1 ball".

"May have trouble with handles against quicker players".

There are a lot of ways to say something without insulting or degrading the player.

Using insulting or derogatory terms to categorize a player is pretty classless.

I just want to point out that he is not a walk on, the Southern article says he was awarded the teams 13th and final scholarship for the 2006-2007 season.

Either way, it can't hurt to have a 7-2 center as your 13th man.

dogdays
08-24-2006, 08:59 AM
He was awarded the scholarship because SIU wasnt going to use it this year(there is no risk, as the schollie was going to sit unused)...its a one year deal...essesentially a scholarship walkon...

Thats all I was trying to say. He is a senior, we had an extra scolarship for 1 year. Doesn't hurt anything. I was just pointing out that calling him a walk on was incorrect because he is on scholarship.

Our last player coming off of the bench is 7-2, it could be worse.

WSU did the same thing with Nick Rogers last year, although it was a little different.

He had been a walkon for his Fresh-Junior years, but was given the last scholarship that would have otherwise been unused his senior year.

The other walk-on, Cameron Ledford, already had the top academic scholarship in the state paying for his education.

Looks like SIU added some height at least for this year although I don't know how good he's really going to be. His numbers really arn't that impressive.
