Two Local Players Join UE Basketball Team
Two of southwestern Indiana's most outstanding scholar-athletes have officially joined the University of Evansville basketball team on this first day of the fall semester. Freshmen Trevor Gregory, a 6-foot guard from Evansville Harrison High School, and Arnie Juncker (pronounced Yunk-er), a 6-7 forward from Evansville Reitz, have been added to the Purple Aces' team according to UE head coach Steve Merfeld. Evansville has a 16-man roster heading into the start of pre-season workouts.
Gregory was valedictorian at Harrison, and made the Academic All-City Team in basketball and football. He earned honorable mention all-city honors on the basketball court last season, and was chosen as the Warriors' Defender Of the Year as a junior and senior. Gregory averaged 9.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game for coach Will Wyman's team, and helped lead Harrison to back-to-back sectional championships. He scored a career-high 20 points against South Spencer, and added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals in a sectional win over Evansville North.
Juncker was valedictorian at Reitz, and earned academic all-state and all-city honors. He was the Panthers' Most Valuable Player as a senior with 15 points and seven rebounds per game. Juncker also made the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Team, and was a Kiwanis Award winner. He scored 23 points against sectional champion Evansville Harrison, 22 against state ranked Evansville Bosse, and 21 against state ranked Evansville Mater Dei. Juncker helped lead coach Michael Adams' Panthers to city and Southern Indiana Athletic Conference titles as a junior.
The Aces' 2006-07 roster includes five seniors (Kyle Anslinger, Justin Petty, Art Stalbergs, Bradley Strickland and Matt Webster), one junior (Victor Gomez), three sophomores (Shy Ely, Jason Holsinger and Trent Wargel), and seven freshmen (Juncker, Gregory, Jay Couisnard, Darin Granger, Willie Larry, Taylor Morrow and Pieter van Tongeren).
