These guys can also play a little basketball!! I read some time ago that Juncker is a "preferred" walkon. I think he received an academic scholarship but not sure.

Two Local Players Join UE Basketball Team

Two of southwestern Indiana's most outstanding scholar-athletes have officially joined the University of Evansville basketball team on this first day of the fall semester. Freshmen Trevor Gregory, a 6-foot guard from Evansville Harrison High School, and Arnie Juncker (pronounced Yunk-er), a 6-7 forward from Evansville Reitz, have been added to the Purple Aces' team according to UE head coach Steve Merfeld. Evansville has a 16-man roster heading into the start of pre-season workouts.

Gregory was valedictorian at Harrison, and made the Academic All-City Team in basketball and football. He earned honorable mention all-city honors on the basketball court last season, and was chosen as the Warriors' Defender Of the Year as a junior and senior. Gregory averaged 9.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game for coach Will Wyman's team, and helped lead Harrison to back-to-back sectional championships. He scored a career-high 20 points against South Spencer, and added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals in a sectional win over Evansville North.

Juncker was valedictorian at Reitz, and earned academic all-state and all-city honors. He was the Panthers' Most Valuable Player as a senior with 15 points and seven rebounds per game. Juncker also made the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Team, and was a Kiwanis Award winner. He scored 23 points against sectional champion Evansville Harrison, 22 against state ranked Evansville Bosse, and 21 against state ranked Evansville Mater Dei. Juncker helped lead coach Michael Adams' Panthers to city and Southern Indiana Athletic Conference titles as a junior.

The Aces' 2006-07 roster includes five seniors (Kyle Anslinger, Justin Petty, Art Stalbergs, Bradley Strickland and Matt Webster), one junior (Victor Gomez), three sophomores (Shy Ely, Jason Holsinger and Trent Wargel), and seven freshmen (Juncker, Gregory, Jay Couisnard, Darin Granger, Willie Larry, Taylor Morrow and Pieter van Tongeren).

Please define "preferred" as is applies to D1 walk-on.

I honestly don't know the definition of preferred as used in this context. I'm guessing now but it might be someone who might have received an athletic scholarship had they not qualified for an academic scholarship....purely a guess.

Has anyone else ever heard the term "preferred walkon" used?

Just a wild guesxs, but I bet it's about the same as "invited" walkon.

I think it's the same as "recruited walk-on"....a player that the coaches actively pursued to get them to come to the school as a walk-on....as opposed to a kid who just happens to be at the school and goes to walk-on tryouts and makes the team.

I've got the impression that if a basketball player is on an academic scholarship it counts against the total for the team. Does anybody know whether this is correct? Thanks.

Preferred or Recruited Walk-on means the guy has a spot on the team and does not have to "try out."

Academic money is different than scholarship money. Does not count toward the 13 scholarships.

In football a lot of schools offer "grayshirts" to incoming freshmen. They basically tell them to pay their way for the first year and are promised a scholarship after that.

Don't know if these two fine young men fit that bill and it is a different sport. Just thought I'd chime in.

I think there are fewer grayshirt situations in basketball. I know of very few situations where a college coach promised a scholarship for years 2, 3
and 4. Most coaches know if a kid will meet there needs and hold out to see how he will play.

Roy Williams and the Kansas crew saw Ace Kid play a couple of times in high school because they were recruiting Wayne Simien. Kansas offered Ace Kid the chance to walk-on the first year and prove himself with the possibility of a scholarship in years 2-3. I was smarter than that and Coach Dougherty, now at TCU, told me that we should take the Evansville scholarship. Oklahoma State and Kansas State Assistants both said he was not physically strong enough coming out of high school for the Big 12. I knew it would be a stretch, too.

Sorry, but I gotta do it. This is what I was secretly hoping for:

Evansville, IN (AP)
Today the University of Evansville announced the signing of 7'1" Antonio Intelligence from Milan, Italy.

Intelligence played on the All-Italian junior team and was featured on several All-European teams.
Flesh out the rest of the write-up any way you like.
