WSU takes on FHSU tonight in their final exhibition game at Koch Arena. FHSU was picked to finish second in the MIAA this year. They play in the same conference as Emporia State who the Shox beat last week. Should be a better test for the Shox but I expect more of the same tonight. PJ has rested his twisted ankle and will play and Ogirri will sit out again. Turgeon wants to see a little more aggressiveness on the boards tonight.
Turgeon anxious for more hittin' (http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/sports/colleges/wichita_state_university/15939043.htm)

FHSU finished ranked #8 nationally last year and was #1 at some point. I look forward to a better test and hope the Shox play better than they did against ESU.

WSU wins 80-38 over Fort Hays State, a team ranked near the top of the D-II polls all of last year. Granted Hays has lost alot, but still an impressive win. The defense was stifiling in the second half and the Shocks came out hot after halftime. Now, on to the real games...

The real highlight was "the pregame call" during the call-in show.
Paul Miller called from Korea, where he is awaiting his visa, practicing with a team there, and learning a little bit of the language. When he gets the visa, he will be officially under contract.
He has a Korean-American teammate who speaks both languages, and he also has a teammate who played at Cincy.
You could just tell by listening that Paul was glowing tonight......and not in a way that will threaten our national security.

Game notes: For the second game in a row, the Shocks were pressured outside. Granted it was FHS, but still, seemed like an awful lot of pressure by the opponents guards. Makes me wonder if teams realized we lost Paul Miller. Of the few times we got open looks on 3, they didn't look too bad. Not Ogirri-good, but not bad.
Gal Mekel continues to impress for a freshman, but still has his defensive uh-ohs. He looked off a defender from near the top of the key early to the outside and hit Wilson rolling to the basket. That should have been play of the game, that is until he was running the break and faked a defender down low and zipped the ball behind his back to heck I don't even remember who anymore. Not an average frosh. You Valley guys will like watching him.
One last note: I don't see how freshman Arbry Butler can redshirt. His instincts (even as a lanky often-missing his assignment on the defensive end) are light years ahead of some of the guys.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half, FHSU had scored 5 more points. At that point they had 27 on the board.

It ended up 80-38 WSU over FHSU. As had been noted this was with Ogirri not playing, Cousinard hobbled, and Turgeon playing a number of the freshman to see what they could do. Just a terrific night on defense for the Shox.:shockers:

Thomasson with 11 and 7. He scored 9 of the team's first 19 points. At one point, we had him with 8 points and 4 boards in about 5 minutes.

Not bragging here, just sharing. The video at GoShockers gives a good look at Gal Mekel's pass to Kyle Wilson, his pass to freshman Chris Brown, a bounce pass to Karon Bradley, a three and then a sweeeeeeeeeet in the lane behind the back pass to #4 Ryan Martin. Mekel wears #1.

Thanks. Someone posted it in a fantasy league I'm in. I found it to be pretty funny after what went down.
The Shox looked fairly good tonight. Missed too many easy/open shots, especially in the first half.
Gal will be special
Butler spent most, if not all, his time at the 3. I like that.
Braeuer is freaking awsome. There's no doubt he runs the team
Wendell looked good.
We are deep on the perimeter
PT and RM will be just fine inside.

I pretty much echo what everyone else is saying. Thomasson will have no problem competing in the Valley, he gets after it hard. My guess is he leads the league in FT attempts this year. R-Mart will be a very good inside presence as well. Mekel showed a little more pg tonight and offensively the kid is great and sees the court like an upperclassmen. Defensively he needs some work. He hustled down the court on one play where the guards were supposed stay and pressure the inbounds pass. I also don't think Arbry Butler will redshirt, especially if Durley is out. I like him at the 3 spot alot. He is active and seems to know his spots on defense. He had 2 points, 3 boards, a steal, and an assist in 10 minutes. Here are some articles from the Eagle on the game:

LOL...yeah yeah. BUT we did have about 100 less fouls than SIU gets on average per game. And those are the games they should have about 200!! ;) So I guess we just figured out how to play CLEAN defense. :innocent:

Quit your whining and play basketball. I think Turg meant more guys need to get a body on somebody and box out inside, not have your guards throw elbows and grab jerseys on the perimeter.
