This is an article from the Cedar Rapids Gazette (Iowa's second largest newspaper after the Des Moines Register) talking about tonights game. It's good to see the Gazette spend some time on UNI.
McDermott's return to UNI stirs up emotions
By Marc Morehouse
The Gazette
Change coaches, change T-shirts.
But you never know. There
might be a few ‘‘Mac’s Maniacs’’ T-shirts floating around the UNI-Dome tonight. But will the Maniacs have the guts to sit in ‘‘Jake’s Jungle’’? The Northern Iowa student section might find itself a little conflicted when Greg McDermott takes his Iowa State Cyclones (6-0) into the Dome for a matchup with Ben Jacobson’s UNI Panthers (4-1).
Last season, when McDermott led the Panthers to their third straight NCAA bid, the student section was ‘‘ Mac’s Maniacs.’’ After McDermott bolted for Iowa State in March, Jacobson, the top assistant under McDermott, was named UNI’s head coach. Through the magic of marketing and T-shirts, Mac’s Maniacs have become Jake’s Jungle. So tonight we have the ‘‘Maniacs’’ walking into the ‘‘Jungle.’’
McDermott isn’t sure how he’ll be received on the Cardinal and Gold bench.
‘‘We encouraged them to be creative yet respectful,’’ said McDermott, a former UNI player. ‘‘ I’m pretty sure they’ll be creative, I’m just not sure how respectful they’ll be.’’
If this one came with any more coaching ties, it’d play more like some sort of reunion.
Jacobson played point guard at North Dakota for Rich Glas (1989-93). When Jacobson was hired, he brought Glas in as his top assistant. Glas gave McDermott his first shot in coaching, hiring McDermott as an assistant (1989-94).
UNI’s other assistants, Kyle Green and P. J. Hogan, coached under McDermott at UNI. Chris Foster, UNI’s director of basketball operations, played point guard for McDermott. John Little, a graduate manager for UNI this year, played for McDermott.
‘‘You don’t share those kinds of memories with people and have it just go away if you put on a different jersey or coach for a different team,’’ McDermott said.
McDermott called Jacobson his best friend. They talk or text-message daily. Jacobson tried to strike a deal with his latest text.
‘‘He said he won’t throw the ball to (Eric) Coleman if we don’t run a ball screen for (Mike) Taylor,’’ McDermott said.
That’s no deal, both ways. Coleman, a 6-foot-6, 240 pound junior, leads the Panthers with 14.4 points and 8.0

Great Job UNI - no surprise here for those of us who follow the Valley. Now if we can just get Drake to take down either ISU or Iowa, that would be great.

No kidding. The Clowns aren't that good. If they're going to run on the floor for them, they'll have to burn the freaking building down for most of their conference home wins.

I can't wait till christmas....
My best friend was a UNI student...was dumb and transferred ISU. He's obsessed with the clones. Today he started giving me crap how he was recording the game to put in his ISU hits collection...
I'm visiting over christmas....and stealing the video!
Go Panthers!

For some reason, the UNI students always rush the floor after an Iowa or iowa State game.

It's time for some new billboards.
Put McDermott's picture on them with the words "When you choose Iowa State over Northern Iowa...You Lose!"

I say if your coach bolts for an in-state school and you have the good fortune to beat his new team on your home court the following year, storm the court all you want.
Strike00
11-29-2006, 09:40 PM
Exactly, I think the storming had alot to do with handing GMac a loss in his return.
It was a good game. hopefully its a "quality win" come March.

Good job tonight! Who cares, if the students want to rush the court than let them. I hope everyone gets to experience that, lets have some fun while we're on top. Not saying we're going to be knocked off, but enjoy the moment while you still can, who knows what the future will bring.

Bucknell is a pushover. Take a look at the games they've played.
They beat Saint Francis today. BY 4 POINTS. They lost at home to Wake Forest. Who loses to Wake Forest these days?
UNI should blow the Bison out.

Happened to read the game summary over at mvc-sports.org......
Iowa State opened the second half with a 13-4 run and tied the game at 37 on a Johnson 3-pointer off the glass. That's as close as the Cyclones got. Northern Iowa maintained a two-possession lead for much of the second half, and pushed it to 55-49 late in the game.
To the author: That's pretty d@mned close........!!

Since I did not see the game, was McDermot able to get the clones to play his type of basketball at all? The game I saw of Iowa St. against Minn. made me think that those players were not "into" his system yet (or were not capable of playing it).
gopanthers!
12-01-2006, 08:31 AM
I don't think they've gotten his system down yet. I don't think it's that they are incapable of playing in his style; they just don't seem used to it yet. They will give some teams a tough time down the road- he's got some talented, athletic players. Give them another month or so to get everything together, and they'll be a lot better than most people expected.

McDerrmot was interviewed on Sports Daily in Wichita this morning. He basically said the same thing.
