The last couple of days, I've been looking over all the conferences in college basketball an who participates in each one. It can be very difficult to keep up with especially in the smaller Conf.
Something that sparked my curiosity was c-usa and the realignment they went through last year. It started to make me curious about the MVC. I have only really been watching MVC basketball the last 5 or 6 years, but I remember when Tulsa was top dog in the conference. Does anyone know the history of why they left the MVC. I am just very curious. If anyone knows of a link that talks about it, pleas post it.

Basically, they thought they had outgrown the conference and decided to join the WAC, which at the time was a better conference. I assume it also had to do with football, and wanting to get into a football league as well as basketball considerations.
Now, Tulsa would struggle to not play on Friday in this league.

From what I remember, it was strictly a football decision. UT was the only school in the conference playing 1-A football, so they were basically playing as an independent, which made scheduling nearly impossible. They switched so they'd be in a 1-A football conference.

Thanks, I looked all over the web to find some info., but i had no luck. I had not even considered the possibility of it being a football decision.
Thanks for the Info.:valley:

It was for football, MVC couldn't give them in all-sports home so they went to the WAC. Also consider at the time they left for the WAC, the MVC wasn't as strong as it is now.

You can dig back as far as you want and find a bunch of quality teams, but if you look in the past 30 years, you will find West Texas State and New Mexico State were in the MVC until the early 80's. I think they left because of distance, although I may be wrong. West Texas State changed their school's name, but I'm not sure what the school is called now.(Southwest Texas State?) I am sure they dropped to Div. II also. I'm sure that somebody on here does though.

I thought West Texas changed to UTEP? Or was the Texas Western?

Tulsa also left for the WAC when the WAC was clearly the strongest conference outside the Big 6 (no BCS then).
It had Utah, BYU, New Mexico, Wyoming etc. They added Tulsa and a few others to become the first super conference.
Then the big WAC members left and formed the Mountain West, b/c the super conference become to unwieldy. Tulsa was left behind with the big dogs formed the MWC.
I am not sure why they left for Conf USA.

I am not sure why they left for Conf USA.
First of all the 3 other Texas schools went out of the WAC which left no close rivals save LA Tech.
CUSA is also probally the best all-around sports conference outside the BCS. They have a great tv deal and pay out over a million dollars to each member each year bc of it. Its not as bad conference as we make it out to be.

It's also not near as good as it was a few years ago.

North Texas State (Denton Tx, I believe) was in the Valley at one time. I don't remember West Texas ever being in the MVC

West Texas State was in the MVC in the mid-late 70's through the early 80's.
I remember Maurice Cheeks when he played there.

My bad memory! I do remember Cheeks though. North Texas was also a member in the early 70's as I recall.

I dislike Wikipedia, but they have full rundown of all the former members.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Big East Conference split up sometime in the future due to their size!

The first experiment with a 16-team "superconference" lasted three years before collapsing. The Big East doesn't have the same football-related stressors as the WAC, though; if the BCS bowl money isn't distributed to the non-football members, the BE could stick around in its current configuration for a while.

Yep, they were members up until the late 1970's. They may not have been members for long but they were definitely members for awhile.

North Texas - DEFINITELY!
Good friend of mine was a skinny 6'3" TE and got a start as a Fr. The guy across the line from him for NTSU was a guy named "Mean Joe" Green.
That was memorable. Not in a good way.
