Yeah yeah I know this game is tomorrow night but hey Im anxious and wanna know what you all gotta say. The shox WILL be very determined to win this one.. but if you look at it this way, they lost at home to a UNI team that we just beat on the road by 8. Dont underestimate the jays.. they are not the same team from earlier this season.
I dont know how this game will turn out.. hopefully not like last year!

Nobody is underestimating Creighton. They have started playing like the preseason pollsters and everyone else figured they would. WSU will have to be on their game.

Since everyone believes in karma more than the strength of the conference, I'm going this way:
WSU will lose by 40 to the clear favorite to win the league by 5 games, your Creighton BlueJays. The Class of the MVC.

My guess is the bookies will favor da shux by about 5. Should be a good game.
Jays have already achieved what I was hoping for on this road swing {at least a split}. Greed now takes over! :naughty:

I'd be surprised to see Creighton win this one. WSU has been backed into a corner and will come out swinging. Unless Funk does something ridiculous like he did 2 years ago in Wichita or the team scores on every possession in a half like a couple years back, this one will be a tough get for the Bluejays.
At least the game is on local TV in Omaha - does Wichita pick up our feed or do you have your own game package?

Since CU is 5-1 and has won some big road games and has the momentum while WSU has not been invincible at home and is struggling to find confidence and climb out of last place in the league - CU has to be dominant favorite.

Wichita State will win by at least 30. And their fans will be extremely modest about it on this board.

The UNI games may not be a fair comparison. WSU has lost at home the last 3 years to UNI. CU is on a roll right now and WSU is still trying to get back their swagger they had during the non conference. Should be a great game. WSU needs this game alot more than CU does so hopefully the crowd and the urgency will be the extra motivation they need to win.

I don't expect a win but I am holding out hope. CU will need a complete game from all of its starters, plus some contributions from its bench. Lately the CU bench hasn't contributed much, and Porter has been spotty. My head says that WSU wins this one by 8-12 points, but my heart says Jays by 3.
It will be interesting to see which Shox team show up. I hope it is the team that has played of late, rather than the early-season Shox that looked like they were headed back to the Sweet 16 this year.

All this humility by Shocker fans has me worried. I feel most comfortable when our fans are down on our team's chances and the other team's fans are over-confident. Basketball seasons are always roller-coaster events -- up one week, down the next. (See UNI.) CU has been riding high ever since the MSU game (except for the blip at ISU), while WSU has been stuck in neutral ever since the home loss to UNI. It almost feels like its time for the pendulum to change directions again. I hope I'm just being paranoid... should be a great game in any case (I hope!).
I will say that if CU wins, they will be the clear MVC front-runner and WSU can kiss their title chances goodbye. A WSU win just means that the Shocks are still in it and CU lost an opportunity for separation.

Clear front-runner? Did you see what SIU did to Missouri State Saturday? We might have something to say about it.
From the outside, this is such a hard game to pick somebody to cheer for. If Creighton wins, they get a big-time road win against a tough team and will stay in first place. If Wichita State wins, it means the Shockers are truly back on track, which is trouble for the rest of the league.
I vote for a cancellation of this game due to weather conditions and vote set the makeup game for four hours before the second game scheduled between the two. That'll give the boys a nice doubleheader and a hour of rest inbetween and will save on travel costs for two schools which really have trouble generating revenue.

I think anyone other than Creighton fans have to be rooting for WSU to win this one. Don't want the Bjays to pick up another tough road win (although I can't say the Panthers made the game at the McLeod very "tough"). I say the Shocks by 5, 75-70. Or I could tempt Ms. Karma and say Jays by 20........does karma work if you're not a fan of either of the teams playing?? :naughty:

Karma isn't a factor either way. Creighton is clearly the better team and is playing much better than WSU.
WSU has no one like PJ Cooz to stop Funk so he will score at will.
Altman is the much better coach as we all witnessed last year.
WSU has no hope.

WSU fouls out almost all of their players and Turgeon has to rip his suit off like a super hero and check into the game - MT hits a half court 3 pointer at the buzzer to beat Creighton by 40.
Seriosly - WSU has their backs up against a wall. I don't see how CU comes out with a win tonight.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if WSU doesn't win. The Jays are going to be battling travel-related issues and stresses. We still don't have Dotzler back. Wichitans hate CU more than anyone else on their schedule and will certainly be very vocal tonight, inspiring their team. Frankly, I was hoping that bad weather would have an effect on attendance, but I expect it would take about seven feet of snow to keep Shocker fans away from a Creighton game.
I'd love a win for so many reasons. But I won't be devastated with a loss. Coming into this two game roadie, I said I'd be ecstatic going 1 and 1. That goal has already been reached. :original:

I believe the outcome will hinge on this on the Jays' 3 ball accuracy.
The Shockers will have to double team Tolliver. If the Jays' are stroking from the 3 line, then the Jays will win.
The best player in the conference will get his points regardless.
And of course, PF + TO < 30 for the Shockers to even have a shot at winning.
The key in this game is Wichita's defense.
In their last 8 games (six of which have been losses), Wichita St. has held just three opponents under the NCAA average for points per possession (which is approximately 1). The Shockers won two of those games, and the only loss came to Northern Iowa — a game that they led most of the way.
Creighton has been the polar opposite of Wichita St. The Jays have won every game but one (the second game of the season against Nebraska) in which they have averaged more than a point per possession offensively.
The edge has to go to the Shockers playing at home.

I don't see how CU can compete on the road against a nationally-ranked and league-leading WSU. Unfortunately, it requires a really messed-up time machine for WSU to have any of that.
If this game could have been played in November when WSU was beating SU and LSU, and CU was losing to UNL, I'd go with the Shox in a big way. Unfortunately, for WSU, it's January.
If the 9-0 version of Shox '06-'07 shows up, WSU wins pretty easily. If the 2-6 version of the same team shows up, CU wins pretty easily. Chances are the Shox will be some hybrid of this year's Jekyll and Hyde performance.
The Shox do have their backs up against the wall, but that's been an uncomfortable position for them lately.
I'm fixing my sig for this game. If CU wins, I will do something with the Funk line too.

I've been on cough drops since Saturday night, trying to get my voice back in time. Usually it takes at least 3 days, but this weekend I had to pull out all the stops. I'll be doing my part, hope 10-4 others do the same.
About the game. Tolliver and Funk are both good at drawing fouls and then converting on them. Also, foul problems have been a huge issue during the recent slide. I think this will be the biggest factor. If PJ and Wilson are taken out of the game early for foul reasons then the Shox will have SERIOUS issues. If not, it should be a close game.

Everyone is terrified of karma.
In all seriousness, I would be surprised if CU came out on top. WSU needs this one badly and most likely will not be in very good shape to contend for the title with a loss tonight. I think they will play with a purpose not seen in a few weeks.
I think if Porter can come back from a terrible game at UNI and play as he had been in the 4 games before UNI, the Jays have a chance.

I think it all depends on the mind-set of the Shockers. They have had a very tough schedule to start the MVC schedule. However, they have lost 6 of 8, and that will get in the heads of the players.
Are they tough enough to pull it out and get this season turned around, or are they going to wilt under the pressures of the losing streak and currently being in the bottom 1/2 of the Valley when the season started so promising? I also think CU has WSU's number a little bit (22 of the last 26), and the players know it. Based on the threads on Valleytalk, it sounds like they have been doing alot of whining about the refs during the losing streak (even more than usual) and feeling sorry for themselves a little bit (per today's Wichita Eagle article about Wilson). I wonder if Turg can keep them from having a mental meltdown. Turg's team has choked a season away before, but will it happen this year, or will they right the ship. They never really faced any adversity last year (longest losing streak was 2), so it will be interesting to see how they handle the situation.
Dana's gotten his team out of their funk, can Turg do the same? I'm guessing he won't and Dana continues to own Turg.

I will be surprised on a lot of levels if the Jays come home with a win. I'd love to see it happen, but refuse to get bummed out if they lose considering the win at UNI on Friday. The home games against Bradley and SIU this week are much more important to the long term success of the team and are virtually must win games.

Because of recent events and the magnitude of this game for the Shockers, I have no question that we will come out with maximum intensity and give it our all. This should be a game that we "get up" for like others in the past which has nearly always spelled success for the Shox. Take into consideration Mark's embarrassing record against the Valley's #2 coach and everybody should be locked and loaded for tonight.
The only thing I am praying against is that Creighton, like nearly every other team that comes into the big-time environment of Koch Arena, doesn't see a star born out of a mediocre player. It seems like there is always somebody from the opposing team who has a career night at Koch Arena. I guess that is the price we pay for playing in one of the nation's most exciting college basketball environments!

I've been waiting along time to say this since WSU started its slide, but its apparent, Turgeon isn't as good as coach all of you made him out to be. He's good, no doubt, but if WSU's fails to make the dance, it will confirm what I said all off season, that Wichita's trip to the sweet 16 last year, was a fluke. Now, don't get all bent out of shape, I said IF wichita fails to make the dance. They still could, but they better get going, becaue as of right now, they are not in.
Surely you jest Dawgie - the self-proclaimed Class of the Valley couldn't be a one year wonder, could it?

Turgeon has as many wins in his one appearance in the NCAA's as Altman has in his however many with CU. It's not only about getting there, it's about winning once you get there.

I thought you were ignoring me........anyway, I agree with part of that....but you also have to make it in the first place to win in it as well. Regardless of how you want to slice it, Altman has had the better career so far, he just has, granted he's been at it longer than Turgeon, but Turgeon still has a lot of catching up to do in my opinion, as do most Valley coaches. Maybe some day, I will think Turgeon, or Lowery, or Jacobsen is better than Altman, but not yet.

Kent State made an Elite 8 run a few years ago.. George Mason made it to the Final Four - I think it's fair to say those were aberrations. While I respect what WSU did last year (and cheered them while doing it), I think it's a bit far fetched to annoint anyone based on a one year or one Sweet 16 trip in the NCAA tournament.

Neither team was overly impressive tonight.
Both of these teams have been built up and knocked back down this season. They are battle tested. I would be afraid to play either one of them.
Nate's shots weren't falling, but he stuck with it and still found a way to keep us in the game. Double teams neutralized AT.

Wow, that was fun. I have no voice left after screeming nearly the entire game. Talk about an intense game from start to finish.
How good was Ogirri? That fade away 3 in the corner was amazing, and he also had the pullup jumpshot working well.
Wilson was back to being the player we had come to expect earlier in the year. 18 points well before halftime.
Is PJ a clutch defender or what? Just like the Syracuse game, he blocks the potential game tying shot. By the way, in the press conference after the game, Cooz said that the foul call on Funk's prior 3 point attempt was a bad call, and that he blocked it cleanly. I don't say this to criticize the refs, they were pretty good. I say this just to point out how stinkin' clutch this guy was. Amazing.

And... creighton did, to some extent, give the game away. We were down 4 and our best player gets fouled on a 3. IF he made all 3, we'd be down 1. Ogirri missed the 1st, so we would've had a chance to win the ballgame right there. But on the other side of things, WSU's 90% FT shooter missed one too. The jays missed some oppurtunities, but so did the shockers. Hopefully we can win against you guys on senior night at the Q...:jays:

Funk is a 5th year senior who has played in Wichita several times, I wouldn't think that the student noise and waving should bother him.
But I would certainly like to think that it did.
Unless of course, Funk is on the take.

That;s a pretty simple answer... FREE THROWS.
If I remember correctly the shockers almost gave it away with that logic.
Didn't Ogirri and Brauer (both 80% + free throw shooters) missed a couple of big free throws to allow the blue jays stay within a two possesion game with under a minute to go?
Look, good game by both teams, nobody gave anything away. Move on

blocked? or mugged?
Good game, creighton fans. Your team played well, and [SHOULD] have no excuses. This guy threw one out, but it was clean. Plenty of bodily separation there. The real mugging took place in the scrum that followed.
Nevertheless, good game creighton.

such a frustrating game... yes that game was winnable and we threw it away..
Nate with only 14pts? Yeah thats average and not bad, but I expect a lot out of him. That last shot bothers me. Nate wasnt open at all, he had 3 guys on him and still took the shot.
Also--he is a 91% FT shooter and he misses 2/3 of them on very very KEY points?
Good game shox.. but we will return you guys a favor when you come to omaha.. :innocent:

Obviously, Iowa high school talent has been impressed with what the Jays have done against the collegiate teams (notably Drake and UNI) in the state of Iowa and decided to cross the river for their higher learning.

Great game Jays. The crowd was great and the outcome (from a Shocker perspective) was even better. I thought Dotzler looked ok, but a bit rusty (as is to be expected after the layoff). Miles looked ok and will be really good when he develops a shot repitoire. In a couple of years, CU could have a REALLY nice guard combo if those two develop like they can. I have never seen Funk miss so many shots and I think it was mostly due to PJ's defense. Another thing that goes unnoticed is the defensive effort from Sean Ogirri. He played tremendous D! Porter tried to come right at him multiple times and Sean held his ground. A year ago, Sean would have wilted and been pushed around. There is no question the block of Funk's last shot was clean. I didn't get a good look at the other one that was called a foul so I am not sure about that one. I think if the ref thought it was a foul so be it, the refs did an outstanding job last night of letting the kids play and calling fouls only when it was an obvious situation that affected the play. In big games like that one, you should let the players decide the game.
I have the game on my DVR and I plan on making a DVD copy for myself. I would be willing to make up to 5 more copies at no charge for anybody that wants one. PM if you are interested.

The Hibna question is a good one. I thought about it, during the game.
I do not know for sure, but I suspect CU depth is lacking. I assume he plays a caretaker role.
He played 13 minutes and his line would have been all zeros except for the two missed shots and one personal foul.
Gakou almost had perfect zeros, but he managed a personal foul.

I think it's a completely different mindset than you will find in Wichita. This is just my opinion, but in Omaha, without a pro team to root for, the people follow teams by sport, i.e Nebraska football and Creighton basketball. Pro baseball is split between the Cubs, Cards and lastly, Royals. As for college baseball, like the rest of the country, people here don't care; the CWS is just a novelty. Nebraska football is the dominant team in the area, so you would find people wearing Husker gear at the game because it is what they own. Also, being a private institution, there really isn't as strong a tie in with Creighton and the City of Omaha as there is with Wichita State and the City of Wichita. Not to say that the die hard fans don't suffer, but believe it or not, life in Omaha does not revolve around Creighton basketball. It's growing, but it's not passionate. Therefore, a Creighton win or loss garners fewer smiles or tears in Omaha as a Wichita State win or loss does in Wichita.
Myself, I am not a Creighton fan, but attend some games because this is where I live, but I hate the Huskers. So if it were me attending the game, wearing red, blue, black or gold would have been purely coincidental. The only colors I own are Cubs and Bears gear.

I haven't read a lot of this thread, so I apologize if this is repetitive.
Very, very frustrating. I did not post after the game last night because I was sooo frustrated and need to calm down.
The frustration was due to all of the poor decisions and turnovers the Jays made. The number of turnovers was completely unacceptable and, frankly, embarassing. They also came at some key moments. But the most frustrating thing about it is that many of the turnovers were, to use a tennis phrase, "unforced errors". Don't get me wrong, WSU played great D, but that D was not what caused so many of the turnovers. There were passes thrown out of bounds and passes without any zip on them whatsoever. Just plain frustrating
Shox certainly came out inspired and played like a team with its back against the wall. I wish I could say the same about the Jays. The Jays performance was just plain sloppy.
According to the local affiliate, the Omaha affiliate and Wichita affiliate split the cost of the game feed and we both saw the exact same TV feed. I've never been to Koch before, but I wanted to know from a WSU'er - what is up with the camera angles? It was hard to watch the coverage at times because of the strange sight lines.

The camera's sit at the same level as the main concourse, so they aren't as high up as some arenas. In person, it's a great view because you still have depth perception, but on tv, it comes out lookin a bit flat and hard to tell the depth. Fox often puts a camera high up in the student section, but it only works so well since it's behind the basket. With the layout of the arena, there's really no way to get the cameras higher unless they mounted them to the roof, which would probably put them too high.

You might like the chances but that is exactly what it is "a chance." It is clearly not having the game in hand. Having the game in hand means that you are ahead significantly enough that unless you make major mistakes you will not lose.

They used to have the main action camera way up at the top of the "center" section on the west side. To do that now they would have to give up probably at least 15 seats for clearance. But, with the cameras where they are now in that midway up spot, they block the view for the first couple of rows above them somewhat.
Personally, I wish they would move the TV camera bay back up to the top. It is a weird angle on TV.

Once again, the Creighton/Nebraska thing is a novelty, a once a year deal where people show up to be seen and have fun. Even I went once, rained like a mother, got drunk, was a good time- didn't pay much attention to the game. As far as college baseball, they follow the Huskers pretty good in Lincoln, not so much in Omaha, but then again, they have a multi-million dollar ballpark and are winning. The so-called Husker baseball fans still show up for games in their Tommie Frazier football jerseys and scream "balk" every time the opposing pitcher pulls his foot off the rubber.

Well, to be logical and realistic. Creighton fans need to realize that since they have no Division I football team, a majority of Creighton athletic fans are going to want to find a team to support for football, and that leaves nearby and former powerhouse Nebraska. It is an easy and simple fit. Nebraska for football and Creighton for basketball (and everything else). But when you do that for so long, you get very attached to Nebraska as well. Therefore you have your "duel fan."
UNI has this problem, but I doubt to the degree Creighton does. Drake sure has it though. Bottom line is, for the most part, football is the most important sport, so you better have a team and be good at it or your school will have a lot of duel fans.

My self-esteem has nothing to do with what I wear. I guess I have a better grasp of who I am and don't dictate my relevance by the performance of others. I am not better or worse because of my allegience to the school I attended, car I drive or clothes I wear. I am not a better person if my team wins, (Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks), nor am I worse off when they lose. Funny, in 1985, the Bears rolled, but the day after the Super Bowl, I still had to get dressed and go to Sonar School in SD (Feet Anti-Submarine Training Center Pacific). Except for tipping a few beers, nothing changed. When the Bulls won, it was just common place.

Perhaps the issue with Wichita is that it is hundreds of miles from anywhere and there is nothing but WSU sports to support. I am quite sure that WSU fans have favorite football teams or at least teams that they enjoy watching and, when an opportunity presents itself, to get to a game.

Perhaps the issue with Wichita is that it is hundreds of miles from anywhere and there is nothing but WSU sports to support. I am quite sure that WSU fans have favorite football teams or at least teams that they enjoy watching and, when an opportunity presents itself, to get to a game.
I live in Wichita. From my door, it is only 130 miles to the city limits of Manhattan, KS, home to a pretty darn good football team in the late 90s and early 2000s.
I know, Omaha to Lincoln is closer, but "hundreds of miles from anywhere"? I know Manhattan ain't much, but their football team sure has had some success over the last 10 years or so against Nebraska. That is what we are talking about, right? Good football teams? There are quite a few season ticket holders to KSU football that live in Wichita. Thankfully, very few of them come to WSU basketball games with K-State stuff on.
I don't think you can compare KSU or KU football as being in even the same league as NU football. I'm not a Husker fan, but that program is a jugggernaut up here. They've sold out every game for decades and have a huge following in this state that rivals any program in the nation. KSU was the worst team in college football until about 12 years ago and rarely sells out its small stadium. The programs are apples and oranges.
That being said, wearing a NU shirt to a CU game is ridiculous.

Maybe someday, just maybe, Omahaians will love their team as much as Wichitans love theirs.
I like K-State but in the hundreds of games I've attended at WSU in multiple sports, I've never once been tempted to wear their gear. Not even once. Omahaians, get with the program. Does your Creighton gear not give you the same self-esteem boost as your NU gear? Is your NU gear your safety blanket?
Funny, I read a post on Shockernet by WuDrWu about people showing up to WSU games in KU gear. Guess it happens everywhere, even if you choose to act like it doesn't, Dopey. :original:

Yeah, it does happen everywhere. We do see KU and KSU gear in Koch arena. It doesn't happen as much there as many places I have been but even one instance is enough to drive you crazy. :ranting:

Hmm, did I ever say no one does it in Wichita? No, I said I've never done it. I suspect you see a whole lot less in Wichita than Omaha. I also suspect there are far more WSU fans who don't own any KU/K-State gear than there are Creighton fans who own NU gear.

Probably not. People are people. If everyone took a look at it without prejudice, it happens everywhere, no more or less in Wichita than Omaha, or Des Moines for that matter.

usaso, you honestly act like you are in 3rd grade. Wichita is better than Omaha and Wichita St. has better and more loyal fans than Creighton and, for that matter, pretty much anyone.
I grew up watching Marquette Basketball, hell, my dad even played for McGuire, but I also wore Wisconsin Footbal stuff. What is the big deal?

It's not wearing stuff from other teams that is so annoying, it is wearing stuff from other teams to an athletic event not involving them. If a person is a KU fan who is also interested in WSU that's fine. If that person wants to wear a KU jacket around town, that's fine. What's annoying is wearing it to a WSU game.

Personally I don't see the big state school attraction. How hard is it to be a Kansas basketball fan? How hard is it to be a NU football fan? How could they ever experience the joy of true WSU and Bradley fans last year? How can they even feel they are a part of anything?
I was with some KU people last weekend and asked them if they were happy with Self. They said they wanted Turgeon but due to his inexperience at the time could understand the Self hire. They said one year of WSU doing better in the NCAA's was OK but if they do it again the shat will fly. They see the MVC as little brother and really are hard to get to budge.
The Nebraska deal is a juggernot. Any NU sport that is trendy or winning will fill a stadium no matter how big or small. It takes over all forms of media. It will sell butt ugly clothing everywhere from the Kwick Shop to Country Clubs. I am not surprised to see Husker clothing anywhere. I see it at Ceighton games. I saw it on a cruise last weekend.

I think I saw a clip of Osama wearing a Husker hoodie the other day. Bandwagon terrorist.

Wichta State was able to put 6 or 7k people in the stands during the terrible Mike Cohen era. Now that is saying something! Those Cohen teams flat out stank, and were not much better than a highschool 6A team. In fact if the would have ever played the juco up the road (Butler) in those days, they would have been hammerd.
What makes 6 thousand people actually buy a ticket to see a terrible product? I don't know. I was one of them, which makes the recent success soooooooo much more sweet.
One thing WSU has is loyalty.

The only real jabbing has been about which school has more fans that wear the colors of other schools.
Disappointing.

I'm not so sure. This photo op was taken right after the S-16 run. Maybe there is something to wearing your team's colors!

Oklahoma St is about 98 miles from my house.
K-state is about 130 miles.
Ku is about 155 miles.
Ou is about 160 miles.
I would say there are four big 12 schools within fairly easy driving distance of Wichita.
They all have some fans in Wichita, but WSU is the dominate school.
Heck there are even quite a few UNL football fans in Wichita (including most of my family).
But their fans DON'T wear their gear to Shocker games (with a few, very rare exceptions).

That won't happen because the poster who epitomized the "Great Nebraskan Inferiority Complex" is banned. Those days are behind us.. However, his girlfriend still posts on here in his defense.

Not true with respect to myself. I won't speak for everyone else, but I won't spend my money on a B-XII football game.
