MR. MIDMAJOR
Altman has had chances to move up, but he feels at home at Creighton.
By ELIZABETH MERRILL
The Kansas City Star

OMAHA, Neb. | On a clear day, a content man can see everything in front of him.

It takes one flight of stairs to reach Dana Altman’s classroom, a retro walk over a soft maple floor with scuff marks that could have come from Paul Silas’ sneakers. A sign taped on the exit says if you’re the last person out of the gym, please turn out the lights.

It’s not too small, not too antiquated, and Altman finds peace in the old banners and the quiet, the fact that he can shut the door and it’s just him and his boys.

It takes a five-minute drive through west Omaha, and Altman is at his in-laws’. Go 90 more miles, through the frozen cornfields and open sky, and he’s back home in Wilber, Neb. They call this stretch “The Neighborhood.”

Everything is right in Altman’s sight, until he walks to the window in his office at Creighton. He’s ready to show off the view 14 blocks down the street to the Qwest Center, a steel-and-glass palace that houses one of the top 20 draws in college basketball. A newly built parking garage obstructs his sight.

I loved this line.

“At Kansas State, they were on him,” Lyle says. “They weren’t too happy with him. He just told me, ‘I’m never going to get fired at a job, especially not that one.’”

Dana's a great coach. I hope he stays at CU for another 13+ years. He's helped raise the bar for the whole league.

Altman = Class Act

The Valley is lucky to have him. :valley: :valley: :valley:

Kansas State was foolish to let him get away.

The majority of active posters from SIU-C and CU have something to do with WSU in their signature lines. I try not to mention it because it is absolutely hilarious and I certainly wouldn't want it to change.

What's even more funny is Bird's quote: "Anyway, we are very excited to be playing Wichita State, although there is a little disappointment as we had all expected to play Creighton." App. State fan". His implication was that the fan wanted to play CU instead of WSU based on reputation but that wasn't the case at all, it was merely about playing the current #1 ranked Valley team. Spin.. Spin.. Spin..

It's a great day...

Hmmm, and I thought it was b/c of the one (1) outright regular season championship he brought to Omaha in his 13 years as coach.

Ahhh...the smell of jealousy. [Do you want to discuss MVC tourney titles?]

By the way, what happened to that thread about MVC schools not getting any press coverage when WSU isn't in the race? A lengthy story about Altman on the front page of the sports section of the KANSAS CITY paper.. Yup, were really lacking publicity

Some fans are so funny.

Or it could be the numerous accomplishments, many of which have never occurred in the 100 year history of the Valley, such as:

9 straight post-seasons (soon to be 10) (Valley record)
11 straight seasons with 10 MVC wins (Valley record)
9 straight 20 win seasons (if we win 3 more this year) (Valley record)
Increasing average attendance to 15,000+ (Valley record)
5 MVC Conference Tournament titles (Valley Record for a program)
Finishing 4th or better in the Valley for 10 straight years

He's also done it the right way and has sent numerous players onto professional schools such as med school and law school.

Ya just gotta love that kind of publicity..

Want me to share the CBS and ESPN articles about MT being one of the top coaches in the country or that WSU is well on its way to becoming a national power, or that WSU is well on its way to becoming the next Gonzaga, or how WSU's facilities rival that of many BCS programs, or... ?

You call it a "collapse". I call it getting beaten by a tough early Valley schedule.
Way to de-value yourself...

The collapse (8 losses in 11 games) included 3 losses against teams with RPI's over 100. Hardly a tough schedule.

well i'd call falling from undefeated at what 9-0 and #8 in the country to 17-9and mid pack of the conference as a collpase.

That's also not devaluing my team, just because Wichita is average, doesn't mean the other teams in the conf. are, and just because wichita collapsed, dosn't mean the other valley teams did. I don't see how that's devaluing my team, we won those games that you didn't. All that tells me is that SIU is better than Wichita. Fine with me.

Exactly.. SIU is the better team. Thus WSU getting beat by a better team doesn't consitute collapse IMO. And besides, I worry more about "collapses" at the end of the year rather than at the beginning or in the middle.

so if you are more worried about end of the year happenings, which I agree are more important, why do we still hear shocker fans still beating their chest over their meaningless #8 ranking and wins over LSU and SU at the beginning of the season? Serious question.

During that 3-11 streak I guess we still had enough in the tank to beat you.

Where?
I think it's more of other Valley fans (notably SIU and CU) bringing those wins up and saying they don't matter. I've yet to see a WSU fan bring those victories up in a while now..

This Shocker fan has a ton of respect for Dana. He is definitely one of the reasons the MVC is where it is today. A really good article. It's says alot to see Dana and MT turning down the chances to go to a BCS school and have them stay in the Valley. Hopefully more coachs in the Valley will follow that lead.

That's in response to some of the CU banter that's been going around.

I can say for certain though there's a bigger majority of CU fans that have WSU in some form of their signatures than WSU fans having CU in theirs..

Thanks for contributing in this newly formed "WSU" topic btw..

What's most hilarious is the fact my signature not only shows what kind of program SIU has but also its domination of your wanna-be C-USA Shockers yet you continue to smoke out of the same crack pipe and try to make it sound like we're the ones who are off our rockers.

Don't think so.

Dana is a shining example of what coaching is all about! For him it is not about the glory. what he has done for the Valley, but most especially, for the city of Omaha is amazing. It is because of the success of Dana & Creighton that we have the beautiful Qwest Center and that 15,000+ people show up for every game. It is because of Dana's leadership and success that Creighton & the Omaha were able to secure the 2008 opening regional for the NCAA tournament.

We love Dana here and while we know that he may someday leave us, we are confident that he has an amazing replacement sitting right behind him at every game...one Mr. Kevin McKenna.
