Damn close vote! You can't really argue if any of the top 3 were selected POY. I have a sneaky feeling that Mr Funk will come to StL with a chip on his shoulder and light it up.

same could be said for Matt Shaw, but there are only some many places and lots of players, some are bound to get left off. It doesn't mean they aren't good players still.

Congrats to Mr. Tatum.
I'm interested in the D.Watts "snub" too...I think it stems more from the writers wanting to put at least the best player or two from every team somehwere on the three teams 9 of the 10 schools are represented on the First/Second/Hon.Ment teams, as they should be.
I think last season with Johnny Mathies being left off the first team was a bigger snub than anything this season.

Very happy Tatum won.
am a bit surprised tho, actually thought they would go with Funk whether that was right or not.
I'm more surprised Tatum won with Falker having as many votes as he did. The dreaded split vote almost happened.
I was sure if Tatum won, Falker wouldn't even be close, but Surprisingly he was.

Congrats to all the winners. Well deserved for sure.
I was surprised to see Laurie get Newcomer over Boo Richardson. I'd have to take a closer look at the numbers.
Glad that Osiris won FOY. If Levi Dyer doesn't lead the All-Improved team there ought to be an investigation.
Falker was my pick for MVP, but I guess he'll win it next year.

Can someone explain to me how 6.2ppg, 4.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds a game is better than 9.9ppg, 5.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds a game from Boo Richardson? Thats a travesty.
Also, why does Spencer Laurie have stats for 03-04 and 04-05 season?

I'm actually more surprised that Nick Porter didn't make at least the third team.
For the record, I have no problem with Tatum winning POY. He stepped up when his team needed it.
Osiris Eldridge was an absolute no-brainer; he is an absolute star in the making... I look forward to 3 more years of battles between OE and Isacc Miles.

I only watched Boo play a few times, but he just doesn't shoot it well enough to earn the nod over Laurie IMO. Kind of thought Osiris might get that as well honestly.

Laurie: .362-fg .621-ft .347-3pt 2.3-TOs 1.97-A/T
Boo: .394-fg .697-ft .327-3pt 3.4-TOs 1.49-A/T
Travesty. He averages 1 more turnover a game, has better stats in almost every area except three point and gets beat out? Travesty.

how well your team finishes reflects on how good the player is some times.
A good player on a team full of average players is going to have inflated stats.
A good player on a team full of other good players is going to have to share the rock a little more and his stats don't need to be as high for them to win.
If Boo was truly as good as you think, wouldn't ISU be a little better than they were?

We increased our win total by 6 games with 3-4 new starters and role players and all 4 had never played D1 before. Seems like thats a pretty good reflection on their talent level.
By the way, I don't think he was a total stud, just clearly better than Laurie. Newcomer of the year, no more no less.

Thank you for proving my point. He helped increase the win total by 6 in a tougher conference.
How many games did Laurie's team improve over last year? I understand they're a better team to begin with.
By the way, Boo won newcomer of the week 3 times to Spencer's 1.

How is Coleman not on the first team. League Rebounding Champ and averaging over 14 points a night. Tolliver is a great player and an even better human being, but didn't have as good a year as Eric Coleman...IMO

you proved my point, its much easier to improve from 0-80, than from 80-100, as an example.
Better teams typically have better players. End of story. That's why Laurie won.

Boo started the season something like 2 of 32 shooting. He disappeared in too many games. He is a horrble shooter! He played better later in the season, but was a bust the first half of MVC play.

Also, keep in mind that these polls are voted on by people who work within the Valley and, more than likely, their votes are based on how these guys perform during the conference season, when they actually get to see them first-hand.
Boo Richardson (in Valley play)
8.2 ppg, 1.1 spg, 4.1 apg, 2.8 rpg, .356 FG%, .303 3FG%, 1.4 A/TO
*8.1 shots per game
Spencer Laurie (in Valley play)
6.2 ppg, 1.2 spg, 4.2 apg, 2.4 rpg, .375 FG%, .333 3FG%, 1.6 A/TO
*5.8 shots per game
It seems like Richardson had big fall-off between the non-conference and conference schedules.

No, they play PG. Laurie doesn't turn it over as much neither are great shooters, but I'll take Laurie over Boo as a shooter any day. Everyone in the student section was yelling for him to shoot it every chance we got.
I'd take Laurie over Boo every day of the week. I guess you can tell, I'm REALLY not a fan of his.
I would have taken Osiris for this award as well. I'm shocked Laurie won it, but not that he got it over Boo.

Good job for siu. Tatum stepped up more often than funk did. But just by looking at numbers, funk averages more points, more rebounds, and more assists a game. I know thats only just a little part of it. Im not taking anything away from tatum, but just wondering.

Like Miller last year, conference champion gets a large weight to the winner. I'd go with Falker by a small margin, but I'd have had no problem with any of the three winning it.

SIU players aren't called for it, they are given awards for it, they win Valley crowns with it, earn top 15 rankings with it, and on and on and on.
What more proof do you need that it is indeed a nice defensive play, not in the minds of some, but in the minds of most, including the media and the coaches!
The only ones who don't think so are the ones on the losing side, which I guess maybe this seaon is starting add up to a lot.

Just so you guys who like to whine and make cracks about SIU's defense and its postseason awards haul are clear on the subject, the defensive awards are voted on BY THE COACHES. Let me repeat ... BY THE COACHES.
So is it fair to say you guys may be overexaggerating? If the coaches think it's good defense, I don't know what your gripes are.
