View Full Version : Who will MVC help win?

The more I watch the MVC, the more I think there's a master plan. Tom Davis has mentioned that Drake gets second tier officials for their home games. We've all had beefs with officiating. Now, the winner of a 6 o'clock game tonight plays SIU at 12 noon tomorrow. Putting either Drake or Evansville in a spot that will be very difficult because of recovery times. Drake has finished the season for the past four years on the road against the other team's senior night. Pretty hard to get a win in that emotion packed environment. Four years is more than a coincidence, it almost has to be a considered and planned thing.
So looking at the tournament, who will the MVC help win? Will it just coincidentally happen that a fourth place team wins the tourney to make it difficult on the selection committee?

No, it is not by chance. It is the way it should be IMO. The #1 seed earned the right to have (an advantage) throughout an 18 game schedule.

Conspiracy? In the Tourney? Nah.
I'll give you a conspiracy. How about WSU vs. Creighton on the Bluejay senior night. It's happened 3 out of the last 5 (or maybe even 4 out of the last 6.) Not that this year would have made a difference, we're just playing like dog food (which doesn't taste very well.) :valley:

1/2 the teams in the conference play their last road game at an opponents Sr. Night.
If you don't want to play the #1 seed in the 1st game on Sat then don't finish 7th or 10th...simple as that.

You can call it what ever you like. I think year in and year out scheduling and officiating is done with purpose and that purpose is not to be fair. Four years in a row on playing away on seniors night is not coincidence. I don't have any problem playing the number 1 seed the next day. I have a problem being the first game of the day playing the number 1 seed. Why not play a night game? If the number 1 seed is so good, it shouldn't matter. You have to give them more advantage?

03-01-2007, 01:12 PM
SIU winning the regular season so much helps the conspiracy theories. I don't know that anyone would argue that there is any team whom it is easier for the officials to make lose a game than SIU. Its quite simple. I expect the officiating in Friday's SIU/DU or UE game to be very loose, and suddenly on Saturday the refs will tighten up against the Salukis. Coincidence or conspiracy?

there is no conspiracy, no secret plan for certain teams to win. NONE!
The tournament format has been like this for a while now from what I understand. The #1 seed should be given every advantage in who and when they play. That's the ultimate reward for winning the Regular season title, if it's not, then why have the regular season.
IMO the #1 seed still isn't given the ultimate advantage because they don't reseed the teams after the play in game. It is set up for The #1 seed to play the winner of the 8 V 9 game. What if 10 beats 7? Why shouldn't The #1 seed get to play the #10 seed? That doesn't happen, so quit complaining.
There is not a conspiracy theory either to ensure the valley gets as many bids as they can in the dance. The reason teams like Bradley, or SIU last year end up pulling the upset in St. Louis is because they have more to play for than the regular season champ or higher seeds. They play harder because they know if they don't win they're done.
I'm not saying the high seeds don't play hard, im saying teams playing for their NCAA lives have an extra gear and urgency that the other teams can't possibly understand. Thus upsets happen.
No one is out to get Drake, or Indiana State. Play better basketball during the regular season and you will be rewarded with seeding and playing time advantages in St. Louis. That's all there is to it.

Drake has played one regular season finale at home in the past 9 years, and that was in the year they were supposed to be good. It seems to me the MVC wants to help the upper-tier teams with a home finale against a lower-tier team to generate a little momentum going into the tournament.

03-01-2007, 01:45 PM
I know UNI has played on the road for the last conference game 5 of the last 7 years. We had a home game this year, the other was in 03-04 when we had 17-0 SIU in the Dome. I don't think there's too much to complain about that way.
As for the lower seeds playing in the evening and then turning around. Yes, it's tough, but they are the lower seeds. The other option would be to play the play-in on Wednesday and give a day off. We could re-seed if we do that, but I don't know if the conference would go for extending the tournament. That still doesn't solve the problem of the teams that play Friday night having to come back and play Saturday afternoon.
As for someone other than a top seed winning, I agree with the others that say the 4-5-6 (even 3 and 2 in past years) have more to play for and often pull the upset. I would not be surprised at all if whomever wins the UNI-BU game would go on to knock off SIU (if they get past DU or UE, both of whom are capable of beating the Salukis, especially on a neutral court) for that very reason.

I would agree that that seems a bit out of whack, I don't agree with the conspiracy part. We were favored to win the conference last year and we played our last game at SIU, great place to generate tourney momentum.

lol, I see the pattern, but it isn't done to give Drake a disadvantage. This is absolutely hysterical. Next you'll argue they're going to remove Drake from the league as their final act to keep Drake from becoming good.
again 9 home games, 9 away games. It shouldn't matter when you play, or for that matter where you play them if you're team is any good.
Absolutley hysterical. Next you'll say some how Drake actually has to play 10 road games and 8 home games in the valley, and that's really how they're sticking it to you.

A wise older Valley fan told me that midmajor conferences don't operate like the BCS conferences. Referees, TV appearances, scheduling are all manuevered to better help the conference's national exposure. No equal playing field due to that need for exposure.
Its not really that big of a deal, we just need to suck it up, get better, then hopefully Drake can benefit!

I don't think it's a conspiracy. I think it is kind of odd though that Drake has played so many final games away from home in the past 10 years. Just a strange coincidence I guess. This conspiracy theory is about as dumb as some as the conspiracy theory brought up by mostly SIU fans this year that the Valley will do everything in it's power NOT to allow the #1 seed in the Valley tournament (in this case SIU) to win it and make room for more at-larges berths. Both pretty dumb.
But, I have to admit, and you would probably feel the same way, that finishing away from home 9 out of the last 10 years (or whatever it is) is a little bit unfair. Some teams lose or gain serious momentum for the Valley tournament based on if they win or lose that last game. A home game significantly helps the chance of a "W" IMO and thus a better chance at more momentum.. Strange coincidence I guess..

That said, I really like the movies, but I wasn't one of those morons who sat out side and waited for tix for 3 weeks in the freezing cold when the pre-quels came out.
I think you are way off base with this. Why do you think the games should be reseeded? It's not like the NCAA tournament is reseeded if there's an upset. The tournament is set up to give the advantages to better seeds, but after that it should be up to the play of the teams. Reseeding would take a lot away from the tournament that makes it fun. Besides, it shouldn't make a huge difference for the #1 seed to be playing the 8 or 9 seed, rather than the 10 seed. Either way the #1 is the clear favorite.

are not the thursday games called the "play in" games? They are playing there way into the real arch madness....that starts on friday. Once they are in the real tourney, they should get reseeded.
Since the NCAA tourney doesn't have a play in round, just that stupid game they had to have, freaking dumb. They don't need to re-seed.

Four years in a row on playing away on seniors night is not coincidence.
Over half the teams in the league had to play a senior night on the road. That's nothing new.
If Drake had to play TWO senior nights on the road each of the last four seasons, then maybe you would have a point. But what you're saying here is not something unusual.

Lets figure out the chance of this happening.
Mathematically, a team has a 50 percent chance of finishing on the road.
So, for 8 out of 9 years on the road, you take .5^9 (.5 to the 9th power) then multiply it by 9 Combination 8.
Resulting answer is about .01758, about 1.7% chance of it happening.
"Usual", which is often used to determine if the event will or won't happen, allows for answers between .05 (5%) to .95 (95%).
Even the odds say Drake is getting hosed.
