Nothing against the rest of the Valley, but as a Saluki fan you (and I) should mind if we lose today. We are playing for a seed and winning the Valley Tourney should hopefully solidify a 3 seed. A loss gives them an out to make us a 4, 5 or even a 6 seed (See Gonzaga). Would love for 3 or 4 Valley teams to get in, but not at the expense of our seeding.
Please keep the updates coming as it's tough to get the Salukis on TV here in New Jersey.

Unfortunately since the game wasn't on national TV, probably no committe members saw it.
But I think BU has proved they belong. I hope they make it. Too bad they didn't make their FTs down the stretch. It also appeared to me that BU was a little tired at the end.
If the committee considers the 13 games that Jeremy Crouch missed, I think they will have a real chance (BU was only 7-6 during those games).:valley:

How was Tatum NOT called for a foul when he tackled Tauai trying to inbound the ball after Shaw's putback?
I'm sure there were questionable calls that went both ways and I'm not saying this was the difference in the game, but Tauai was literally tackled trying to inbound the ball. Why wasn't a foul called on that play?

The WSU season is already over, so that statement doesn't hold much water. SIU could very easily lose in the championship, the other team, whether it is Mo State or Creighton, will need it more, will play a little harder.

Or when Tatum was tackled to the floor a couple times off the ball, Falker slapped in the eye, etc etc. They just kept playing because that is the way it goes. They missed calls, they made up calls, that is the way of the ref.

I don't know about that. Last year they got blown out in the first round and this year their team is only marginally better. If SIU-C is going to get out of the first round they are going to have to hope for a favorable matchup. But don't worry, they won't go down without a fight (literally). They will be carrying the Valley banner into the Dance and possibly erasing all the great pub WSU and Bradley earned last year with solid, big-time basketball, and not this gimmicky stuff that the hillbillies from Carbondale subscribe to. *sigh*

I don't think so. WSU and Bradley put the Valley on the map last year with concurrent Sweet Sixteens and WSU's plunge this year after beating 'Cuse and LSU has only created the perception that the Valley is stronger than it is. If you want to measure WSU's weight in the public arena just look back a couple weeks when you beat us at home and your subsequent national ranking. Why would beating a Valley cellar dweller mean so much to the pollsters?

WSU and Bradley put the Valley on the map last year with concurrent Sweet Sixteens and WSU's plunge this year after beating 'Cuse and LSU has only created the perception that the Valley is stronger than it is. If you want to measure WSU's weight in the public arena just look back a couple weeks when you beat us at home and your subsequent national ranking. Why would beating a Valley cellar dweller mean so much to the pollsters?
T

You need to recheck your history of when you lost your ranking and we got ours. Yours was gone before you set foot in the Arena. If you would have beat southern, you probably would have gotten that ranking right back... however the slide continued.

*sigh*

If SIU is only marginally better this year does that mean that the rest of the valley got worse?
With the type of system that SIU-C employs and the way the majority of Valley teams are built like, SIU-C will always be successful in the Valley. They reduce the game to the lowest common denominator and beat the ***** out of everything that touches the basketball. It is a travesty to the founders of this great game but nonetheless effective. One need only look to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL to see how effective a defensive system can be in a league and also how destructive it can be to the entertainment-value of the game..
A highly talented, high-scoring, exciting star will never be able to overcome a clutching, grabbing, defensive player who is left un/under-regulated. That is what referees are for. If there were no referees in sports every game would become a physical grudge match and the stars would never, ever shine and eventually everybody would lose interest.
If SIU-C is matched up against a finesse-style NCAA team they are probably going to beat them unless they really lay an egg. However, if they are matched up against a big and tough team (who can score) then SIU-C will probably get a dose of their own medicine and go home embarrassed.
You ask what do I hope for? I hope that somebody cures the disease that is SIU-C basketball and let's get the ENTIRE Valley back to playing solid, fundamental basketball. Until this happens every single game that SIU-C plays will always have an asterisk by it in my book.

An interesting note about the New Jersey Devils and the NHL: The NHL actually amended the rule book to stop the clutching and grabbing that had infected the league due to systems that a couple teams, namely the Devils employed. This "gimmick" was so effective that they had to change the freakin' rules of a sport that is over 100 years old. The same thing is going on with SIU-C and their "gimmicks". But how do you change the rules of basketball? How do you specify that excessive physical play is allowed under the goal but not on the perimeter where SIU-C works their "magic"? The only thing that will stop SIU-C besides an abandonment of their current philosophy is an NCAA rules change and that simply won't happen because the rest of the country is not infected like the MVC is. Big-time basketball programs know that Ugly-Ball will never sell and they can recruit the kind of athletes that can overcome SIU-C's systematic advantages. The real scary thing would be if a Duke or a Kansas with their superior athletes employed SIU-C's philosophy. Then you would have an UGLY mess on your hands (pun intended). The great thing is the top programs still play great basketball and the only people that have to suffer from this malady are Valley fans considering the Uglies haven't made much noise nationally..

Oh please don't start that lameness. I'm half blind and I couldn't believe how many missed calls went for the Braves. Overall the officiating was fine, but if you were a conspiracy-nut you could go HMMMMM.
Not saying it was the biggest play of the game or anything like that. Just was more asking the question of whether or not a foul could or should have been called.
Not a conspiracy theory smart-a**. And I said in the original post that I'm sure there were calls that went both ways. I just thought that was an obvious questionable play at a key time.

Aight - enough lurking, time to post.
This post arguing that SIU is "marginally better and needs a favorable matchup to get out of the first round" is either hyperbole or hallucingen induced (or the product of blind envy.)
1) SIU is more than marginally better. Record wise, personnel wise, experience wise, this is a far superior team to last years version. They lost nobody and all have gained NCAA experience. You'd be a fool to think that they are no better.
2) They'll get a favorable matchup, since they will be a 5 seed at the lowest (if they beat CU tomorrow they'll prolly be a 3), but it is an earned matchup, not a gift. I think you could slot SIU in at 12 or 11 and there wouldn't be a 5 or 6 in the country that wouldn't join saluki fans in rising up against the unfairness of that darn committee.
3) Yeah, this is my first post on VT, so go ahead and tell me that I should shut up because I haven't been on it since Al Gore invented the internet.

4) Go to the baseball forums and post on a team that is still in the tournament.
I don't know where this envy thing came from. For the past three or four days, I have seen the envy thing being thrown out by Saluki fans. Prior to that, the only fans that accused any other fans of being envious, were Wichita State fans, primarilly ColdBlooded. And that was directed, almost exclusively at Creighton fans. As for people being envious of SIU, that is far from the case. If anyone is envious, it would be fans from ISU, ISU, UE and nobody else. To demonstrate, and I mean this seriously, is what are other fans envious of? You have a good basketball team- so what, so do several other Valley programs. You have a good football team, but you are 1-AA, might as well be div 2- the same as all other Valley (Gateway)programs. Other than that, your facilities suck and you are located in Carbondale. I think people would give up a few wins to (A.) have decent facilities and (B.) not live, have lived or spent time attending school in Carbondale. Get over it, yes teams would like to win more, but there is no envy of SIU.

Yeah, and one more thing. I've been to Wichita, and let me say, it is far from a "hick free zone." If I read one more post from a WSU fan with the word "hillbilly" in it referencing SIU....
Just cause Wichita don't have hills don't mean y'all don't have hillbillies, yo.
See, this is where people get in trouble making assumptions. You just slammed Wichita and the only person that has responded to you never lived closer than 300 miles from that fine Kansas community.

Now, that said, get off your Carbondale sucks high horse. Yeah, it is a small town, but the notion that it full of slack-jawed yokels is rather amusing. I grew up in Minneapolis and live there now, and I'd move back to C'dale if there was work there (which there isn't). Southern Illinois is a beautiful place, and there are a lot of cool folks there. I laughed out loud at the debate about whether Omaha or Des Moines was a more cosmopolitan city (based on the presence of a PF'ing Changs?), and that kinda undercuts VT credibility on the relative "hipness" of valley cities.

You should probably read all my posts on the Wichita/Omaha/Des Moines subject. Having lived on both coasts and growing up in Chicago, I thought the whole thing was very funny.
As for the Twin Cities, I have a sister that lives in Edina, it's nice up there, but other than the wildlife and abundant fishing, Minneapolis isn't for me. One question though, do you all have a Bonanza or Sizzler?

I would not trade our wins for a nicer facility... I live in Florida now and miss the ole arena like none other. How much time have you actually spent in Carbondale? Ever been to giant city, garden of the gods, the wine trails, or hung out with the students? SIU was an awesome college experience. Myself and I am sure most Saluki fans will agree with me after going to school there I wouldn't have traded it to go anywhere else.

See, you back doored into my point. The same holds true for everybody else. Everybody loves where they are, home is home and it is what you make of it. Nobody is envious. Don't throw out the envy card and enjoy the winning.

Just an observation from looking at some stats because I'm really not into talking smack. But I do get a little tired of hearing all the "Ugly" dawg talk.
WSU Avg. 68.6 PPG this year and finished 17-14
"Ugly" Salukis Avg. 63.5 PPG this year and are currently 28-5
The beautiful style of pure basketball, playing it the way it was meant to be played scores 1 more point every 8 minutes than the "uglies".
Another observation:
WSU Avg. 18 Fouls per game
"Ugly" Dawgs Avg. 20 Fouls per game
Thats 1 foul per half more on the "Ugly" dawgs
And the last:
"Next game"
WSU - "No games Scheduled"
"Ugly" Dawgs - MVC Championship Game + NCAA Tournament (6 consecutive)
It must be a great day to be a Shocker!

What does this have to do with anything? Last time I checked, SIU won the regular season, Wichita State finished 6th. I'm confused, a league winner contrasting their style of play against a sub .500 conference team? On the other hand, I have no objections to the way SIU plays, but if you are trying to prove some kind of point, why not try and compare yourself to CU, BU or MSU, not the top team in the second tier.

Yup, well said. I've lived in both California and Florida and now northern Illinois. I miss Southern Illinois. I actually bought a weekend house in Southern Illinois just so I could be closer to the place I wish to retire (in about 25 years lol). Speaking of which -- I get to fire up my 260 hp I/O deckboat in about 1 month!!!
