Wright State's coach Brownell is a name to keep in mind. Some info on him...
During Brownell's tenure as head coach, the UNCW men's basketball program has enjoyed an unprecedented era of success. The Evansville, Indiana, native brings a four-year head coaching record of 83-40 to the Raiders along with two NCAA Tournament appearances. UNCW posted a 25-8 mark this past season and won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, beating out Final Four participant George Mason University. The Seahawks advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they lost in overtime to George Washington University 88-83. His four-year Colonial conference record was 61-22 which was the best overall winning program in the league during that time. Two different groups (the league's coaches and media; and Collegeinsider.com) have twice named Brownell the Colonial Conference Coach of the Year (2003 and 2006) and Foxsports.com cited him as this season's National mid-major coach of the year.
"While Brad's record is outstanding, it is his character and values that excited us most in making a final decision. We believe he is the right person to lead our program on and off the court and we are delighted that he, his wife Paula and his two daughters are joining the Raider family," said Mike Cusack.
Averaging just short of 21 wins a season, Brownell has compiled five All-CAA performers, one CAA Player of the Year, four CAA All-Defensive Team selections, one Defensive Player of the Year and seven CAA All-Academic honorees besides two CAA regular-season titles, two CAA Tournament Championships, two Coach of the Year awards and two NCAA Tournaments.
Before accepting the helm, Brownell was the assistant or associate head coach at UNCW under current DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. The Seahawks posted a 136-103 mark during that eight-year period, including two NCAA and two NIT appearances. During his 12 years in Wilmington, UNCW was one of the best defensive teams in the nation, leading the CAA in defense in all but two of those campaigns.
A native of Evansville, Ind., Brownell arrived at UNCW in 1994-95 and immediately worked with Wainwright in bringing the Seahawks into the national spotlight. With Brownell on the bench, the Seahawks earned the school's second NCAA Tournament berth in 2001-02 and advanced to the Round of 32 with a stunning 93-89 overtime upset of fourth-seeded Southern Cal in the NCAA Tournament.
At Evansville, Brownell worked as a graduate assistant coach with former coach Jim Crews during the 1991-92 season as the Purple Aces fashioned a 24-6 record en route to the MCC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Brownell earned his Bachelor's Degree from DePauw in 1991 and completed his Master's at Indianapolis in 1994.

Brownell's never had a losing season in his five years as a head coach and he is red-hot. After leaving UNCW, he turned Wright State into a conference co-champion team in his first year (after they were pre-season 5th-6th pick).
But, if Wright STate wins the Horizon tourney and they get into the NCAA, you can forget Brownell going to Evansville. He will be at a Big Ten school instead.

Hey, when you guys mention names such as Marty Simmons, please mention who they are, where they're currently at, etc. for those of us who don't know.
I've mentioned Rick Herdes before. He is the current coach at University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. USI is a perennial D2 power that is currently 26-5. Herdes was just named GLVC Coach of the Year. The other night his team came from 17 down to win. In that game, his team allowed an amazing 7 points in the second half. The opponents did not score for the final 9 minutes of the game.
USI's coach before Herdes was a guy named Bruce Pearl. The same Bruce Pearl that has won consistently at Wisc-Milwaukee and is now turning Tennessee into a national power.
Evansville let Bruce Pearl out of town. Let's not let another successful coach in Herdes leave too. We've seen what Pearl did to a program. Herdes is enjoying the same kind of success.
Herdes has much more charm than Merfeld. He'd be perfect for attracting kids to UE plus he already lives here.

How about Jason Zimmerman, the Aces' assistant? He had a few years playing and coaching under the best coach in the NCAA.

NO.....to Rick Herdes. He wins at the D2 level by recruiting unhappy D1 retreads from all over the country. You cannot do that in the D1 ranks. I have friends who know him at a professional level at USI....they all say he is an arrogant jerk who inherited a no-lose situation from Bruce Pearl. They stated that if their kids were good enough to play college basketball, they would avoid allowing their kids to play under Herdes.
YES....to Pete Gillen. We need a jolt to the program. He is an unemployed, big name coach who knows how to win at the midmajor level as well as recruit quality student-athletes. He turned Xavier into a power.......why not his old nemesis, UE?

Ben Miller. Son of Eldon. He is an assistant at Missouri State and there was talk of him on our board when Mac left...
Young guy with a ton of energy and you might get his old man as an assistant...

At this point UE needs to go with a "name coach" who can quickly bring in MVC caliber recruits. Not sure if a young guy with energy can have an instant impact.

UE should wait until after the tournament to see who is available before pulling the trigger too soon.

On the contrary AceDad, I think the Aces should obviously look for the best available candidate, but they should also try to wrap it up ASAP.
They had two signed commits back in the fall, and a recent verbal. Who knows if he will now sign, or if the two signees will stay on board. They had three open scholarships for the spring period which starts April 11. If they wait until the first or second week of April, a new coach would be even more handcuffed with any spring recruiting. Need to give the new guy a chance to fill those spots.

I think Brownell is the best candidate but doubt we can get him. Marty Simmons will take the job in a heartbeat if offered and will immediately bring some of the fans back for next year. I think he has proven he can coach at SIUE.
There are a number of assistants at successful programs that will be prepared and ready to move up.......check this out.............I remember this guy from his time at Tulsa. I think he ended up not doing well at FSU and that's why he's an assistant now.
Steve Robinson
Position: Assistant Coach at UNC
Birthdate:
10/29/1957
Steve Robinson is in his fourth year as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina and his 12th as a member of Roy Williams' coaching staff.
Last year, Carolina played three freshmen in the starting lineup for much of the season, but won 23 games and earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Forward Tyler Hansbrough received unprecedented honors at the national and ACC level for a freshman and Williams was the conference and NCAA Coach of the Year.
In 2004-05, the Tar Heels went 33-4, won the ACC regular-season title and beat the No. 1 ranked team in the nation to win the NCAA championship. Robinson helped coach four players who were selected in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft, including Final Four MVP Sean May and ACC Rookie of the Year Marvin Williams. Raymond Felton won the Bob Cousy Award as the top point guard in the country.
It was only the second time in NBA history one school had four players chosen in the top 14 selections of one draft.
The Tar Heels averaged 88.0 points per game, the 10th time in as many years that Robinson has teamed with Williams to coach a squad averaging 80 or more points. The Tar Heels were No. 1 in the nation in scoring and assists, fifth in field goal accuracy and seventh in three-point shooting.
In 2003-04, Robinson coached three different Tar Heels who led the ACC in scoring, rebounding and assists. His primary responsibilities include scouting, recruiting and bench coaching. He was recently named one of the top 25 recruiters in college basketball.
Robinson was head coach at the University of Tulsa for two years (1995-97) and at Florida State University for five years (1997-2002).
As head coach at Florida State, he led the Seminoles to the second round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament, becoming the first coach in school history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in his first season. The Seminoles went 18-14, beat No. 5 -anked Arizona, the defending champions, and upset fifth-seeded TCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Robinson was head coach at Tulsa in 1995-96 and 1996-97. He led the Golden Hurricane to a 46-18 record and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In his first year, Tulsa won 22 games and won the Missouri Valley Tournament for the first time in 10 years. In 1996-97, Tulsa went 24-10 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, Robinson was named the Coach of the Year in the WAC Mountain Division. The 24 wins were the second-most in Tulsa history. Robinson coached future NBA players Michael Ruffin and Shea Seals while at Tulsa.
Robinson has a record of 266-74 (.782) on the bench with Williams.
He was an assistant at Kansas from 1988-95 and in 2002-03, during which the Jayhawks posted a combined record of 214-59. The Jayhawks won five Big Eight Conference regular-season titles and made Final Four appearances in 1991 and 1993. He was the team's academic coordinator; nine players made the Big Eight All-Academic Team and 37 had grade point averages of 3.0 or better.
He coached a number of Kansas standouts, including first-team All-Americas Jacque Vaughn and Raef LaFrentz, All-Big Eight selections Kevin Pritchard, Mark Randall, Adonis Jordan and Rex Walters and Big Eight Newcomer of the Year Jerod Haase.
Before joining Williams in 1988, Robinson spent two years as an assistant coach at Cornell and three seasons at his alma mater, Radford. In 1988, Cornell won the Ivy League title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 35 years.
A native of Roanoke, Va., Robinson graduated from William Fleming High School, and attended Ferrum Junior College, where he played basketball for two seasons. He was one of three student-athletes to receive Radford's first athletic scholarships, and was team captain in 1980 and 1981. He earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1981 and his master's degree in counseling in 1985, both from Radford.
He is a member of both the Ferrum Junior College and Radford University Halls of Fame.
Robinson was born Oct. 29, 1957. He and his wife, Lisa, have four children - daughters, Shauna and Kiaya, and sons, Tarron and Denzel.

Dick is a great man, and a wonderful basketball mind. ALL of our big wins were his game planning. He is as good at X's and O's as anyone. He will be missed at ISU. Would be a great addition to any school, as head or assistant coach.
