Minnesota said to be holding out on a big name....could very well be Lowery he said because Flip Saunders does not want it....prepared to offer 1.5 million plus

How does Katz know this? I thought he was assigned to follow Kevin Durant around for the rest of his college career?

That would be what...6 times what SIU pays him...7 times? He gets that and IMO he's as good as gone. It would be very, VERY hard for any coach in his position to turn down. This would dwarf SIU even doubling his salary. However, for him to turn it down, he would probably seek a LOT of security from SIU.

I love CLO but "a big name" and paying "1.5 mill" doesn't sound like Lowery to me. If they go really deep in the tourney, then maybe.

Minnesota is a great job in name only. To me, it's one of the biggest trainwrecks in Division 1 basketball. Dan Monson did a good job in cleaning up the mess left by Clem Haskins, but it's tough to recruit basketball players to a hockey-mad school. Fans at UM are every bit as passionate and supportive of their hoops program as most other BCS schools, but I don't foresee top 4 Big 10 finishes or trips to the NCAA tournament on an annual basis there. Minnesota is one of the largest universities in the nation, but their basketball prowess is somewhat lacking when you consider its size. If Lowery were to go to the Twin Cities, I wish him success, but it would probably come later, rather than sooner, if at all. I thought Monson would be there longer than he was, but that's the nature of college sports--win, then win more, or else!

Sources tell me that Lowery will be offered $500K in base alone to remain at SIU. I would guess the total package in the future would be around 750K with promotional contracts, etc.

Write this down, Chris Lowery will not go to Minnesota. His wife told me that she thinks snow sucks.

Will SIU get C Lo up to $350 K after this season? With incentives to $ 500 K?
Otherwise he's gone.

The big name is Tubby Smith. If UK losses it's first game he is gone.

Strangely enough, Minnesota almost ended up with John Wooden as their coach in the late 40's. After his second season leading the Sycamores, Wooden had job offers on the table from UCLA and Minnesota. He was going to accept the Minnesota job, but the day he was going to call and accept, there was a blizzard up there (imagine that...), and the phone lines were down. Not wanting to wait too long and let both opportunities go, he decided he'd better take the UCLA job instead. And the rest, as they say, is history...
Just a bit of trivia for 'ya!!!

And I get pissed when the power is out or my cell phone will not work. It does not ever cost me the greatest coach in the history of the game.

They still play in the old type of Barn, their facilities are worse than SIU's
I think he is holding out for bigger fish on the table...

That old barn they play in is pretty cool. I don't think there is anything wrong with it besides the fact that it is old.

It's one of those places that you dont think you'd ever like to move there, but once you get there you dont want to leave.

Uhhh, let's compare locales ...
Twin Cities metro area -- Pretty much amenity you'd ever want in a city, a nice campus, lots of money to spend on salaries, pretty rabid fan base, etc. Oh ... but God forbid ... IT SNOWS!
Carbondale -- The biggest attractions within a 20-mile radius are a federal prison, fishing, the New Madrid fault and all the meth you'd ever want to score.
Yeah ... many of you are so right. Minnesota sucks compared to SIU.

Thanks for the info Indytreefan about John Wooden--I never heard that story before! I didn't mean to rip on Minnesota's program in my earlier post. I just think it's a very tough place to maintain a consistent winner for a variety of reasons. Climate was not one of my considerations, but it is a point that's well raised. However, if that were the case, teams like Hawaii, Stetson, Florida State, and San Diego would be fixtures in the NCAA tournament annually.
As for Williams Arena--I think it's great. It is one of the last bastions of old-school arenas that drip with character, much like the Palestra, McArthur Court, and Hinkle Fieldhouse. We need more venues like that on the college basketball landscape. Gallagher-Iba Arena is nice since they expanded it in Stillwater, but I liked it better when it was a 6500 capacity snakepit known as Gallagher Hall!
