ISU men's basketball recruits playing in state tournaments

TERRE HAUTE — The future of the Indiana State men’s basketball team isn’t consigned to an interview room just yet.

As ISU continues to seek its next coach, a process that should heat up next week with interviews, ISU recruits Jordan Printy and Clayton Vette are both in the semifinals of the Iowa state basketball championships, being played this week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

Printy, who plays for Class 4A No. 1 Linn-Mar (Iowa’s 4A is similar to Indiana’s 4A), scored 18 points in a 73-60 quarterfinal victory over Sioux City North. Printy co-led the Lions (22-1) with 18 points, three assists and three steals.

Linn-Mar plays Urbandale tonight in a semifinal for the chance to advance to Saturday’s championship game.

Vette’s Waverly-Shell Rock team had an easy beginning in its Class 3A quarterfinal, drubbing Pella 60-38. Pella is best known as the hometown of the Korver (Kyle, Klayton) clan — Kaleb, Klarc and Kirk are currently on Pella’s roster.

Vette, who is still bothered by a hamstring injury that dogged him throughout the season, scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds, having to do little in Waverly-Shell Rock’s rout. At press time, Waverly-Shell Rock was playing Grinnell (18-7) in the Class 3A semifinal. The championship game is Saturday night.

ISU assistant coach Greg Lansing went to Iowa to see how Printy and Vette — players he was instrumental in recruiting were faring.

“They’re both playing on top teams in the state, and they’re both in the semis with a good chance at winning state,” said a thrilled Lansing. “Jordan’s had a real good year, many people have told me how much he’s improved his all-around game this year. Clayton is such an imposing figure, and that’s what people see, but he also has such athleticism.

“Its been fun to watch them play up here. It’s also been great to hear so many coaches ask me, ‘How did you get those guys?’”

Lansing also strongly denied a published report that said he had been named ISU’s interim coach, saying that no one in the ISU athletic department has given him that title.

Lansing declined to speak about his own prospects for the ISU coaching job. He is expected to be among the candidates that will be interviewed next week.
