Former Drake golfer Zach Johnson is tied for 4th after day 2 of the Master's....2 strokes back.

Too bad he finished with 3 straight bogies. :banghead:

Impressive!!! Great showing for the Valley by Johnson. He's going to be right up there with D.A. for one of the Valley school's most successful golfers.

His excellent play in the Master's so far follows a top 10 (9th place) finish in the WGC-CA Championship. A top 5 Master's finish will probably double his yearly earnings. Hopefully the Bulldogs golf team gives him a call if that happens!

Sorry for my ignorance, but who is D.A.?

Drake did get $100,000 when Johnson made the Ryder Cup team last year.

While he hasn't won a whole lot of tournaments, he is consistently up there on the Champions tour after a long career on the PGA tour. He is almost to $10 million in career earnings on the PGA/Champions tours, but throw in his foreign events, and I bet he has exceeded it.

In 8 events played this year, he has 4 top 10s and 6 top 25s. Last year, he was top 10 in the Senior U.S. Open, Senior British Open, and Senior PGA Championship. Last year was good to him overall as he was in the money in all 24 tournaments he played with 8 top 10s.

He's in a championship drought right now of almost 2 years (5/22/2005) and hasn't won a playoff yet in his career (0-3).

He is the pride of ISU golf. I believe he has represented us well. No major championships or Ryder Cup appearances, but he is a darn good golfer. Has raised a lot of money for our golf team over the years.

Congratulations to Zach Johnson for winning the Masters. He earned it the hard way, from playing golf at Drake (not exactly a golf power) to the mini-minitours to the Hooters Tour to dominating the Nationwide Tour, then beating the world's greatest player in THE tournament every player covets.

Hard not to root for a guy like that.

Congrats to Zach!

Here's and idea for Drake fans......consider changing the school colors to include green.....the same color of green as "the jacket"........it would be a bolder color for both the school and the conference.

Just a random thought........

But was Jesus really by his side all day long and rooting for him and no one else to win?

What schools are golf powers? I have no clue....I'm guessing it's mostly southern schools (warm weather year round). Drake is usually at or near the top of the MVC in golf, but I don't know anybody who really follows the sport at the collegiate level.

Zach Johnson was not the #1 golfer on his high school team or on his college team. He's a guy who never gave up on his dream. Class act all the way.

Stanford, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Florida, Arizona State and most big southern schools dominate college golf. I believe Wichita State is a fairly successful program as well.

I hear you on that... not a big fan of the praising the Lord speech but if that was comforting to him along the way, more power to him.

It was nice to see Johnson win he seems like a class act. I was relieved when no other player was able to get to 1 over and force a playoff. After all the emotion Johnson showed after leaving the 18th – I had no idea how he would be able to get it together mentally if he had to play a few more holes.

I never pegged him as a Master's champion this early in his PGA career but after what I considered a very good showing in the Rider Cup, I knew he was going to win his fair share of tournaments going forward. It was a well earned victory.

Zach is a great guy. Drake was really good when he was there - qualifying for regionals in 1998 after getting all the way to the finals in 1997 and finishing tied for 23rd in the nation. Zach was typically the "#3" guy on the team behind Ben Poehling and Ben Pettitt (http://www.cantour.com/stats2.php?pageID=Bio&id=230). Pettitt was the MVC medalist (http://www.mvc.org/records/golf.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=7600) in '97 and '98, and if I remember correctly Zach finished 3rd in both of those tournaments. Poehling was behind the green on 18 yesterday, along with fellow former Bulldog golfer Mark Ohde.
Zach is a good basketball player also - particularly as a shooter. He was the Drake representative in the State of Iowa 3 point shoot-out finals held at Carver Hawkeye during halftime of an Iowa game in '97 or '98. He won the event at Drake pretty easily.

Congratualtions! This shows what perserverence and determination can do for an athlete. He had an amazing tournament. I wonder if he'll take some Drake dignitaries out for a few rounds at Augusta.

That would be the Intramural 3 Point Shoot-out I'm referring to above.

No. INS doesn't have a men's golf team. I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, though.
I know Zach and Pettitt (and most of that golf team - Ryan Hartman, Clint Pogemiller, Corey Braunschweig, Neil Johnson, etc.) from around that time as I was affiliated with DU during that time period.

Johnson finished tied for 2nd (behind Tiger Woods) at the Tour Champisonship in Atlanta, pocketing $619,500.

He came within one stroke Saturday of tying the lowest round in the history of the PGA tour.

Zach must really like the state of Georgia....in 3 tournaments in that state this year, he has won 2 of them and finished 2nd in the other.

Let's hope he remembers his alma mater with some of those earnings. :original:
