Great. Barry finally figures out Turg, and they replace him with another coach he can't beat. He may now be the worst coach in the MVC.

As an MVC fan, this is good for the conference. I hope he does as well as Turgeon did - 1 NCAA trip a decade for the Shox sounds about right. :original:

Good get Shox.:valley:

Congrads! Great hire. Sounded very impressive at the news conference. Considering what he's already accomplished, I think the Shox are better off then what they were with Turg. Gurantee he's a better bench coach.:shockers: :jays: :valley:

He is going to be great in the Valley. Pretty good press conference so far. I wish someone would have thrown a black sheet or something over the table.

No worries about him going home, he looks very happy to be there.

his body language told me different.... i noticed he was drifting off sometimes, deservedly so, he was probably thinking about how much winthrop meant to him over the years

I got not such vibes. If he does the turnaround again, he will have lost all credibility with the coaching world. He said we had nothing to worry about, that would not happen here. I believe him.

He even made a joke of last year's 1 day coaching job at CofC....plus this year he brought his wife, kids and even in-laws....I think we are good.

To all Valleytalk posters - contrary to popular opinion, not all Shocker fans are loonies. However ASM does not fit into that category.

Shox will have a different look. Full-court press, 3/4 court press, 1/2 court D all mixed in with some man-to-man and some zone. Wants to play uptempo and create baskets off of defense.

Sounded like his preference for offense was (in this order) 1) Transition, 2) Secondary break, 3) Motion offense.

I liked his repeated references to emphasizing a players strengths and hiding their weaknesses. Sounds like he might be more willing to adjust the system to the players rather than Turgeon's seeming insistence on adjusting the players to the system.

Now, if there was anything at WSU next year other than Sr's, Fr and JuCo's, I'd be pretty confident about WSU's chances next year.

This sounds very, very familiar. Does he run a high-post offense as well?

Congrats Shocker fans. It is a good hire and I am glad you did not pay him a million. Another sweet sixteen run or two and then you can pay him a million.

The real question now becomes what if ...:shock1:

With that salary, how many years are you giving him if he does not make the tourney?

But, that can wait. All the best until conference play starts. It seems like a good fit.

Well, right now I'll take any tournament. I just want to see the Shocks in the post season, preferrably the NCAAs.

No high post from Marshall. Motion offense if the fast break, secondary break and maybe a set play or two don't work

Winthrop has already named Randy Peele, an assistant at Winthrop, as their next head coach.

At the press conference, Marshall mentioned he would be hiring at least one, possibly 2, assistants. Sounds like this move was in place and decided before Marshall got to Wichita.

That might explain the lack of urgency in getting back to Rock Hill to meet with the players.

Peele was formerly a head coach at UNC - Greensboro.

His teams certainly play a physical style. Eight months from now, I'll be reading about how the Shockers are thugs.

From a Winthrop fan:

I read an article 2 years ago that said EVERY single player who had ever played for GM at WU graduated!

That my friends is icing on this cake.

Some quotes from the press conference:

"Preparation will not be a problem, hard work will not be a problem, playing with passion and intensity will not be a problem," Marshall said. "I can't guarantee you every shot will go in and I can't guarantee you that we will win every night, but you will get an honest effort and you will get something you can be proud of on that court night in and night out.

He planned to meet with his former players in Rock Hill, S.C., Saturday evening. At least one, and possibly two, of his coaching assistants would come to Wichita State with him, Marshall said, declining to name them.

Wichita State's new head coach told reporters he would concentrate on recruiting in the next few weeks, and said he looked forward to his first practice in the upcoming season with his new team.

"I am very aware of and very cognizant of the fact we are not done with the growth that has started in the last several years, but can actually aspire to even greater heights," Marshall said.

In the past nine years, Marshall said he has been recruited nine times about other coaching jobs _ three of those times this spring.

Winthrop, under the coaching of Marshall, has made seven NCAA appearances in nine years. Marshall was honored earlier this year as the Big South league's top coach. Marshall, who won coach of the year honors for the fourth time, led the Eagles to the first perfect conference record in Big South history.

"Today we have a national level coach," Schaus said. "We hired a coach that is highly regarded throughout the country. I am going to tell you it is going to take some time. We need to be patient. ... Excellence is not about one season, it is about building a program."

Sure, the Big South Conference isn't a world beater, but just looking at who Winthrop played the last two years, where they played them, and the point differential is fairly interesting:

(the rankings are what the teams ended up being at the end of the season)

06-07
at #2 North Carolina, lost by 7
at Mississippi State, won by 11
at #24 Maryland, lost by 11
at #12 Wisconsin, lost by 3
at #11 TAMU, lost by 20
at Missouri State, won by 11
#17 Notre Dame, won by 10
#12 Oregon, lost by 14

05-06
at Marquette, won by 7
at Alabama, lost by 3
at South Carolina, lost by 14
at Auburn, lost by 2
at Memphis, lost by 10
Tennessee, lost by 2

Sure, mostly losses against the bigger name schools, but NONE of them were at home, most of them were at the opponent's arena, and a few of them were fairly close against some really good teams.

Not bad for a team from one of the worst conferences in the nation going up against some of the very best.

Those of us old heads can recall when Wichita State regularly faced the "thugs" cry under the Smithson II tenure. I've often wondered what caused the change in Valley officiating standards. Personally that style of play does not appeal to me, I suppose with more success I'll be a convert :naughty:

Also, I don't intend this to be a jab at SIU as it is very difficult to argue with continued success. I just wish you could have pulled off the defeat of that damned mythical bird :cursing:

Go Valley!!

You and me both. We stuck it to those chalkers, and Falker threw it away. Oh well, it was a great game to watch, despite the ending.

He runs low post, high post and 3/4 post. Occasionally, he throws in 1/4 post to provide confusion for a possession or two.
