View Full Version : Welcoming a new coach to your school?

When a new coach is hired, I am sure that the AD oversees everything, but do they delegate responsibility to other people to see that their new coach and family gets acclimated to the new location and environment the right way.
I am sure the University pays for relocation expenses. Does the new coach drive to the new location, or have the cars transported and fly to the new location?
Like, do they have someone that assists the new coaching family on finding a home, and basically provides any information that they may want. If so, usually how many people are involved in this, and who are they normally?
I am sure new coaches have many domestic concerns besides their occupational concerns. I would just like to understand the process a little more about what happens after a new coach is hired.

I can tell you what I wouldn't do. I wouldn't leave the new coach all alone in his hotel room with his wife and 12 year old daughter who aren't really down with the idea of leaving it all behind and moving to Fayetville while I jet on back to Georgia for the Masters hoopla, leaving it to the Chancellor - a nice guy but no salesman by any means - to try to convince the new coach that he doesn't really want to go back home.

Right, if I was the Wichita AD, I don't think I would leave Marshall's sight for long. Can you say sleepover?

I don't know the complete answer to this, but I would guess it varies by school and the size of their budget.
Generally, I would expect all relocation costs to be paid, including the costs to have autos shipped, if that is what the new coach wants. I would also suspect the amount of assistance in finding housing, etc. is somewhat dependent on the amount of assistance the particular candidate wants. In other words, if the new guy wants help finding a real estate agent/housing, I'm sure every university would recommend real estate agents, assist with arrangement of temporary housing, etc.

I've word that he's already registered at the official WSU Country Club, Terradyne, so there's no leaving now. (Those early termination fees are a real biatch).

You're joking about Terradyne right? I was a member there for a couple years back in the mid 90's. It was like 1,750 initiation and 175.00/mo. No way does he go out there..
I'm fairly certain he will be playing the majority of his golf here:
Flint Hills National Golf Club (http://www.flinthillsnational.com/)
That is where he was wined and dined and you can bet that Mr. Devlin offered him a complimentary membership. I think initiation fees are around 30k. A founders membership was 100k 8 years ago.

The big question: Does COLD start his job as Marshall's lawn mower on May 1 or May 15?
Sorry ... just having fun. Flint Hills is one fine-looking course. Have you played it, COLD?

Holy cow, how many extra golf balls should a 15-20 HC duffer like me bring along? Even with several relatively short par 4's and a short par 5, that is some scary looking rough.

First they have to turn back in the old school's car, cell phones, etc., so that's the first thing the new school should have. I'm also sure they get a nice fruit basket :innocent: .

No, I'm not joking (except about an early termination fee being a big deterrent).
All members of the WSU athletic department get a membership to Terradyne as part of their benefits package. I'm sure it's not the only place Marshall will golf, though.

The Shocker coaches and staff have memberships to Tallgrass, not Terradyne. Turg certainly played most of his golf at Flint with a few rounds mixed in at Tallgrass.
GM will likely play most of his golf at Flint. Who wouldn't given the choice?

Marshall has found one of Wichita's best realtors for his new digs:

I also have a feeling he'll be playing his golf here:

Forget 30K for a membership, he can play for $4.50 a game here!

Well, then Marshall paid for his own Terradyne membership then, I guess. And so did the other staffers that I know.
For 750K + per year, I guess Marshall can easily be a member at all of them....
