View Full Version : Which New Coach?
Snapshot9

Which new coach will improve his teams's standing the most in the conference from last year? This doesn't necessarily the highest in the conference, but will move his team up by the most slots, i.e, 8th last year up to 4th, 5th up to 3rd, 7th up to 6th). 8th place team would win in my example because they moved up 4 slots.
So, which coach do you think will have the most impact for moving his team up?

Jank. Not sure if it'll be him as much as all the talent he inherited

Is Dana Altman considered a "New" Coach at Creighton......

Even if he was, his maximum upward movement would be 1 spot...

I admit my own bias, but I would not be surprised if Marty Simmons turns things around quickly for the Aces. For all the new coaches hired, he is a product Evansville and is entirely familiar with the situation and what is needed. :aces:

I agree that Marty will make the biggest impact on this definition. Unfortunately, UE has a lot of room to move. :innocent:

Surely, someone outside of the Terre Haute area thinks the Sycamores will be "Upward Bound"? Coach McKenna & Coach Lansing have been thru many many MVC games and know what it takes to get it done. An outside hire, i.e. Marshall, Jankovich, will have to take the tour thru the Valley a time or two to really understand what level it takes to compete every time out (no, all conferences are competitive, but the Valley is more than competitive EVERY SINGLE GAME). I will give a + to Simmons as he has been there but it has been awhile and a ++ to Davis at Drake as he should not be surprised at all. We have the farthest to advance and expect to advance some this next season!

Simmons improving next season is going to be tough. We lose too much.

Jankovich, based on the unbelievable good situation he was thrust into at Ill St. The roster there is pretty well stocked with talent.

I'd like to think McKenna will make the greatest first year strides. A couple of reasons why: first, I think his style, both offense and defense, will better suit the players we have. Offensively, we'll run more, which is what we were doing in December and early January last season while we were winning. When we ran, we won. We'll run more, we'll win more (I hope). Defensively, we'll do more things that will allow our bigs to stay on the floor longer, like, oh I don't know, PLAY A ZONE ONCE IN A WHILE.
Second, KMac already knows what it takes to win in the MVC. I really believe that knowledge will be priceless when it comes to getting the team ready for the conference season. He's been there, for loooong stretches of time, and that will show.
Third, he realizes that we've got to back off on the pressure we put on the certain members of the team for the whole season. The last couple of years, we've basically worn out by the end of the season. Gabe Moore, who I fully believe is one of the premier guards in the league, has been so doggone tired from playing 38 minutes a game, that by the end of the season, he's a shell of himself. KMac has already spoken to the need for this change, and I think he'll get it done.
Last, (and this might be wishful thinking) we might have a bit more of a homecourt advantage this year than the past several, if for no other reason than people will be curious. And if he could get 'em winning, they might come back! Hulman Center can really rock when it's full (I realize that none of you have probably ever seen that, but trust me on that one), and given the right circumstances, could be a HUGE homecourt for us.
I think, at this point, we got the best hire of the first four. Time, of course, will tell, but KMac has said and done all the right things to this point. We'll see how long the honeymoon lasts in good 'ol Terre Haute!!!

Guess if you are a tree or ace you want to think the best but Jankovich obviously has the most talent and easiest situation to jump right into and have early success.

Not sure I agree with you, particularly when Indiana State beat ISUred twice last year, and ISUred didn't have any wins of the caliber of Butler and Purdue. Sure, ISUred didn't do the "last half fade" we've become famous for, but that had more to do with over-use of key players and bad coaching decisions.
No doubt, though, it will be interesting to watch all these new faces...

Last half fade hopefully will not happen with our new coach. It is not hard to coach against the same ole same ole that Royve threw out there. Also, our new guy will throw in some zone wh:sycamores: en man to man is not working. I will say ISU Red looks better on paper though.

When it became clear that Merfield would not be rehired at UE, I searched the web and thought McKenna could be a good choice for someone. The fact that he worked under a coach whom I give the most most credit concerning the growth of the Valley, Dana Altman, gives him instant credibility. I do agree with the earlier post, however, that Jank at ISUred has an abundance of talent on hand. What he does with it remains to be seen.

I would say Jank since he was handed alot of talent on a silver platter.

Indiana State beat ISUred twice last year,
No they didnt. We split. Each team won on the road.
The Sycs gave us what was arguably our worst loss of the season in Normal, but then we came back and won by 15 in Terre Haute.

But then............who won at the Valley tourney; 2 of 3 usually wins a series!

Worst loss of season? ISUred's website says it was a 54-50 game?
I think you might be forgetting your worst loss a 68-49 drubbing by the Salukis, I remember I was there.

Wow...OK wait a second...let me retract my previous post above. I actually forgot about the MVC tourney (if any of you had the night I had that night, you'd forget about things too...and even if you didnt have "that" kind of night, most Redbird fans at least WANT to forget about that game  )
Yes, IMHO our 3 worst losses of the year were home vs. SIU, home vs. Indy St, and in the MVC tourney vs. Indy St. The SIU game simply wasnt even close. We played totally scared, on our heels, and didnt even show up. We were lucky the game was close for the first 10 mins. The Dawgs came in and beat the living piss out of us on our own floor and there is nothing more that can be said about that game.
The 54-50 home loss to Indy St was flat out embarrassing too. When you hold a team to 54 at home you should win. But we didnt come ready to play and couldnt hit a shot to save our lives. I dont even know if what I saw that night could be described as basketball. Then the loss in the MVC tourney to Indy St might've eclipsed that as we completely pissed away a 12 point lead with under 8 mins to go. We were in control for the majority of that game and just seemed to put it in cruise control a bit too early. You cant do that against any Valley team, but we did. Oops.
Sycamore Fanatic, I stand corrected. I thought you were talking strictly regular season. You did beat us twice, but hey, it looks like I at least did succeed in blocking that tourney game from my memory  As for SiuCubFan8...well, you've beaten us 11 straight times so unfortunately we are used to it :banghead: We played you fairly tough in C'Dale though but oh well. Maybe one of these decades we'll beat SIU again :cursing:

I can see wanting to block the tourney game out of mind; most likely was the final nail in the coffin for Porter too, don't you think? However, all is well that ends well...........both Blue & Red ISU's have made changes and our optimistic fan bases can expect imrovement this next season.

Could it be that the Sycamore fans have blocked the next game they played in the MVC tourney??? If I remember correctly they scored 39 or 49 points vs Creighton...something ugly.
That all changes next season though!!!!
