Ohio St underappreciated???? are you kidding me??? how do they even make it on this poll?

SubGod22

Because they said over the past 10 years. With the exception of this year I think they probably have been underrated. I remember a few years back wondering why they didn't get more play than they did.

What a silly poll. I hope ESPN listens to the results of this themselves, because if anybody underappreciates teams, it is ESPN. If the poll shows Creighton and SIU and Number 1 and 2, perhaps that says something distinct about a failure on the part of ESPN. If their readers and watchers are appreciating the Valley teams, then ESPN is failing to meet the expectations of their audience. How about a few less ACC (overrated) games and few more Valley (underrated) games.

They should ask who is the most overrated teams? #1 - DUKE!!!, #2 - North Carolina, #3 - Kansas, #4 - Indiana, etc... Why do we always have to watch these teams? I am sooo tired of them. I don't even know the players anymore because they just leave for the NBA each year. If I wanted to watch those players and type of game, I would watch the NBA.

Ouch! It would be a sad day to be included in this poll. One thing is for sure, the Shocks are not underappreciated nationally! (See #8 consensus ranking) :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

While ESPN can surely pay consultants to get better data, perhaps their intent is to gather some unscientific data on who they should be giving more air. And we all know they are arrogant enough to believe that if the general public thinks a certain way, it's probably due to ESPN's programming practices.

Absolutely! Especially when you consider the alternate. Being overrated means you have arrived on the national scene. It means your program is being cradled in the collective arms of the national media.

It's still a great day!

There is a simple reason WSU is not in the poll: the poll is for teams that have been good for the past 10 years!!!!!

No one year wonders allowed :grin: :clap:

Current results have CU & SIU running 1 and 2. Looks like those two schools are recognized nationwide.

Or this is the only site that knows about it. BTW, both made my list. I would be curious what some of the people on here think and how they are voting given the teams. Kind of interesting.

Whatever helps you sleep at night.. :lol:

Be sure and wake me up when CU hits a consensus #8 in the polls early in the season with only 9 wins.

It's always a great day to be a Shocker!

It would be impossible for me to try and explain comprehension to one that is unable to consistently comprehend so I will cease wasting my time.

P.S.

If you would like to start a topic concerning how the Shockers finished last season be my guest. This thread is about "underappreciated" teams like the Salukis.

P.S.S.

Remember how hard it was for your team (S16 team) to crack the top-25? Very said indeed.. :no:

On another note I feel that the Bluejays should not have been included in this poll because I don't feel they are underappreciated on a national scale. Creighton basketball has redefined mediocrity and mediocrity does not garner national appreciation beyond what they already receive.

Now Saluki basketball, while contemptible on many levels, has been successful and may have even raised their national image slightly above all the other nameless directionals out there... I believe the Saluki's are underappreciated. I'm sure it has nothing to do with their style of play though.. :innocent:

If memory serves me, both Creighton and SIU were ranked in the final regular season poll which means a heck of a lot more than being ranked early in the season.

Also, it is nice to see that ESPN SportsNation wants to see more Creighton and SIU - top 2 underappreciated per the poll. Maybe someone at the network will notice and get the league a few more games.

It would be great if ANY Valley team can get more time and airplay on ESPN. Would be a welcome change from the typical self-fluffing over BCS schools...

I have a hard time with Gonzaga on any underrated list......maybe 6-7 years ago, but not now.

If anything, I think they've been overrated the last several seasons.

Seems like they won a lot more NCAA tourney games when they were the unknown, low-seeded team.....ever since they started getting high seeds, they've been a non-factor.

Here is the aggregated top 10. (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2864704)

What do all 7 of these schools have in common?

1. Wisconsin
2. Southern Illinois
3. Xavier
5. Creighton
6. Butler
9. Marquette
10. Illinois

Right, they are all Midwestern schools. (And that is not including Pittsburgh, Memphis, Oklahoma St., Vanderbilt, (all of which are on the fringes of the Midwest) - It does include the Cincinnati schools, which some may argue are not Midwest).

Here is how it breaks down by "expert."

Bilas = Top 6 Midwestern schools

Forde = 5 Midwestern schools

Glockner = 7 Midwestern schools

Katz = 5 Midwestern schools

Lunardi = 5 Midwestern schools

If it proves anything, it proves there is an east coast bias. I don't know how much clearer evidence you would need. Also, I think there is a developing West Coast bias (reference DUBulldog's previous post, which I agree with). So it seems, as always, the Midwest is overlooked. This is just another example of that.

Matrix

I can see where some of the West Coast teams are coming from. Their games are on so late at night that it would be easy to see how they wouldn't even get a thought from anyone in the eastern time zone.

Very cool indeed - national perception of the Jays is obviously different than that in a certain Kansas town:

5. Creighton

The yang to Southern Illinois' Missouri Valley yin, the Bluejays have plenty to chirp about themselves. They are coming off a ninth straight 20-win season, and since 1998 they have made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and have owned the Missouri Valley tournament, winning the title six times. The Jays also are the standard-bearer for mid-majors with top-shelf facilities, playing in the terrific Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., in front of some of the game's rowdiest fans. Creighton regularly ranks in the top 30 in the nation in attendance. Bonus: In April, head coach Dana Altman took over at Arkansas for about a day and a half before changing his mind and returning to the post he's held for 14 seasons, meaning both Creighton and SIU retained their excellent coaches.

Today's version: Most underachieving (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2865999).

Here are the experts ballots (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2866090).

Evansville made Andy Katz's list at #9. The only Valley school to get a vote. Plenty of Big 10 and Big 12 schools getting votes with Michigan at #1.

Guess that is good for Evansville? At least it means someone has high expectations for them?
