HAHA . . . Summit League? AWEFUL name! Is there another "conference" anywhere that calls itself a "league". I agree, 8th grade AAU all over again. Or maybe not even that high. More like Little League.

Someone please tell me this is a joke! :helpsmilie:

Mid-Con probably got confused with D-Con on more than one occasion.

The name was changed to get rid of the word "mid", the conference is going to try and raise its profile. I'm not crazy about the new name but I'll take it over the Mid-Con and the other option which was Pinnacle.

Ivy League
Patroit League
Horizon League

My point exactly; all power-houses there. NO real "conference" refers to itself as a league. I see this as the Mid-Con's further fall into the abyss.

See above post, if they are trying to raise the profile, you just moved into bad company.

The Horizon isn't that bad, they've done alright for themselves. Like I said the other options weren't too appealing either, I guess its hard to find a name that fits a bunch of schools scattered across the country that don't have that much in common. Really, I'm glad the league is at least going to try and raise its profile. Getting rid of that ancient Mid-Con logo will also be a plus.

I'm not a proponent of overselling anything. In other words, if you have a product, call it what it is and people will buy it. That way, you tend to disappoint fewer consumers. That said, it should be called the NSSC "Not So Sucky Conference".

Then why not just drop the "mid" and go with the Continental Conference? What was wrong with the "mid" anyway? Except for Southern Utah, they are all pretty much in the middle of the country. Plus, the Mid-Con/Summit would do well to be considered a mid-major. They are lucky no one is brave enough to commonly use the term low-major, because that is what they are.

Report: Mid-Con Conference to change name
Confusion, new vision seen as reasons SDSU's future home will alter title to Summit League

There's nothing middling about this name - other than the way it was made public.

Beginning next season, the Mid-Continent Conference reportedly will become the Summit League. The name and a new logo for South Dakota State's future conference home will likely be unveiled next Tuesday at a news conference, but word of the change leaked early because it was part of an advertisement for incoming member Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne placed in a recently released phonebook in Fort Wayne, Ind.

While Commissioner Tom Douple could not be reached for comment Wednesday, the ABC television affiliate in Fort Wayne reported that it received confirmation from the league.

"I'm told there will be a press conference on May 15," said SDSU marketing and promotion director Micah Grenz, the school's representative on the name and logo committee. "Exactly what will be released at that press conference, I'm not totally sure."

According to Grenz, the league began exploring possible changes for a variety of reasons including: its diverse and expanding geographic footprint, confusion over the full name in light of the frequently used abbreviation (Mid-Con) and the mediocre connotation of the word "mid". In a fall survey of 800 student-athletes, athletic staff members, boosters and media, 91 percent felt that a new name and logo - a rainbow doesn't mean what it used to - would boost perception of the league.

Grenz said that more than 100 possible names were initially submitted by committee members. Looking to avoid numbers, geography and the word "athletic," the list was cut to seven - others in that group included the Great American Conference, the United League and the Pinnacle Conference - and then to three that were turned over to member presidents for final approval. . . . Could of renamed themselves the Chuck Norris League, that names guarantees one of the schools would win the NCAA title every year and they would go undefeated in OOC.

I mean, honestly, who would show up to play a team from the Chuck Norris League?

Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council Lanuches Summit Plan

Mid-Con becomes The Summit League

May 15, 2007

Elmhurst, IL - The Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council has embraced a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all its student-athletes.

The Summit Plan, which places an emphasis on presidential leadership, seeks to advance the league to one of the premier mid-major conferences in the country. It focuses on student-athlete welfare, academic performance, increased home attendance, and improving the league's rating percentage index (RPI) in all sports.

The league plans to recognize the academic achievements of its student-athletes at every opportunity, while seeking to improve the Academic Progress Report (APR) scores of each team. The marketing efforts will be focused on increasing the home attendance, which helps support the student-athletes and provides additional exposure. In addition, the Summit Plan will include a review of staffing, budgeting, and scheduling by each member institution to be conducted with the goal of improving RPI in all conference sports.

Included in the plan is the creation of a new image with the unveiling of a new name, logo, and Web site. As of June 1, 2007, the conference will be known as The Summit League (www.thesummitleague.org) (http://www.thesummitleague.org)).

"The Summit League provides a mental image to reach for the top, both academically and athletically," Commissioner Tom Douple said. "The new name fits in perfectly with the Presidents Council's vision for the continued improvement and growth of the league."

The name was developed over the last eight months by a conference-wide committee. The logo itself was designed by Nina Schmidt, a graphic designer at South Dakota State University. . . . (read more)

I would be alot more supportive even with that flaming name they picked if they just came out and said. "Everybody thinks we suck so we are going to fool everybody by changing our name so we can schedule games and attract recruits."
