From the Des Moines Register:
Snagged pantyhose gives D.M. holdup suspect pause

The police report had the makings of a "Jerry Springer" episode: a man dressed as a woman, the threat of violence, thrown shoes, and some yelling.
When it was over, Matthew Frederick Tandy, 33, of 3023 State Ave., Des Moines, was charged with robbery, interference with official acts and harassment of a police officer. It might have been worse, police say, but Tandy's pantyhose got caught on some chicken wire, which foiled his escape.
Officer Natale Chiodo's report said the chain of events started with an early morning holdup at the Walgreen drug store, 104 E. Euclid Ave. An employee said a person tried to steal about $500 worth of merchandise and pulled a knife when confronted by the manager outside the store.
It was shortly after 2:30 a.m. "It was pitch dark. I drew my weapon and used the flashlight on my gun. I was startled to see a man in pantyhose, blue sweater and wig five feet away in a combat stance holding a knife in his left hand," Chiodo wrote in his report.
Chiodo said he backed up "while giving loud verbal commands to drop the knife," but the suspect tossed a size 10 ladies' shoe at the officer and "took a step toward me and acted as though he was going to fight. He was wielding the knife in an underhand grip."
Then the man "suddenly stopped, and I could see that his pantyhose were tangled in a chicken wire fence."
Chiodo said he continued to yell commands, while the suspect tried to free himself.
Chiodo told the man that "if he didn't drop the knife and get on the ground, I was going to kill him."
The man paused, then followed Chiodo's direction as backup officers arrived.
No one was hurt in the arrest or the robbery.
Employees said the suspect walked to the store's pharmacy, picked up a notebook from the shelf and began to write in it. He later requested to use the restroom, handing a shopping basket full of merchandise to an employee and asked that it be taken to the front of the store.
The man later walked to the front of the store, grabbed the basket from the counter and said, "I'm going to hate having to do this to you guys" before he walked out, police said.
Tandy alleged that his boyfriend told him to steal the items, police said. He was in the Polk County Jail on Thursday on $33,150 bond.

First Gay Couple Married in Iowa
WHO-TV
August 31, 2007--The Polk County Administration Building is a busy place today, as same-sex couples line up to apply for a marriage license. At least one same-sex couple has already been married. Tim McQuillan and Sean Fritz of Ames, were married this morning.
Reverend Mark Stringer of the Unitarian Church of Des Moines performed the ceremony in front of his home in Beaverdale. He says he has married a number of gay and lesbian couples over the years, but this is the first union that is legal.
Thursday, Judge Robert Hanson ruled Iowa's marriage law unconstitutional, and that same-sex couples should be allowed to get married. Hanson also ordered the Polk County recorder to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
There's a good chance that Thursday's ruling could be overturned on appeal, or at the very least, a stay or hold on that ruling could be issued until an appeal could be heard. In his ruling, Judge Hanson says couples who are, "Otherwise qualified to marry one another may not be denied licenses to marry or certificates of marriage or in any other way be prevented from entering into a civil marriage."
It's a ruling that same-sex couples had long been waiting to hear. "It's very heartening and encouraging. We're happy to be a part of it," says Larry Hoch. He is among the plaintiffs who filed the lawsuit. He and his partner aren't planning to get married right away, but they could, now that a judge has determined it is legal for them to do so.
The recorders office is expecting many requests for marriage licenses between same-sex couples as a result of this lawsuit. The attorney representing the plaintiffs says the judge made a difficult decision on a highly emotional subject. "Judges have the unique power and duty to evaluate any law to make sure it's consistent with the constitution," says Denny Johnson.
Thursday's ruling is likely not the end of this discussion. The Polk County attorney's office has filed an application for a stay, asking the judge to temporarily suspend his ruling. They anticipate that will happen very soon, and when it does, same-sex couples will no longer be able to apply for a marriage license.

Iowa Group Seeks Impeachment of Judge Who Approved Gay Marriages
WHO-TV
September 12, 2007 (AP)--A nonprofit group is calling for the impeachment of a district court judge whose ruling overturned Iowa's ban on gay marriage.
Bill Salier, a 2002 candidate for U.S. Senate, says Polk County Judge Robert Hanson violated the state constitution by legalizing gay marriage. Salier is a founder of the group Everyday America.
In a statement, the organization says Iowans must stop officials from overstepping the constitution to change society as they see fit.
Hanson ruled in August that the state's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
Impeaching a judge takes an act of the Legislature, which is controlled by Democrats.

Toying with doll lands man in hoosegow
The Associated Press
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A man was arrested after a government agent allegedly found him in an office building restroom lying next to an inflatable, anatomically correct doll with his pants down. Craig S. McBulldog, 47, was charged Wednesday with indecent exposure, a misdemeanor.
The criminal complaint against McBulldog says he was discovered in the public restroom by an agent for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, which is one of the federal agencies that rents space in the Hach office building.
McBulldog was arrested, and Cedar Rapids police took him to the Linn County jail. His arraignment was scheduled later Friday, police spokeswoman Cristy Hamblin said.
Another agency has an outstanding warrant against McMcBulldog, but the reason for that warrant was not immediately clear, Hamblin said. He was still in jail Friday morning and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
McBulldog's criminal record includes a 2004 conviction for burglarizing Just For Me bridal boutique. Shortly after the burglary, police officers found McBulldog in a nearby alley, carrying a mannequin wearing a bridal dress.

Man Thinks He Managed To Masturbate Without Waking Roommate
DES MOINES, IA–Drake University sophomore Craig McBulldog, JR is under the mistaken impression that he managed to masturbate without waking roommate and top-bunk occupant D.U. Bulldog. "For about 10 minutes, I could feel the loft frame vibrating slightly," the 19-year-old said. "Then, the vibrating escalated just a tiny bit for about 30 seconds before stopping altogether." The incident marked the fifth time in as many days that McBulldog's stealth masturbation was detected.

A THAI woman is at large with her husband's penis today after discovering the man's unfaithfulness.
McBulldog, 35, came home in Bangkok yesterday and found her 34-year-old husband DUBulldog in bed with another woman, said police Lieutenant Colonel Kornwat Hunpradit.
She later gave him several beers before cutting off his penis with "a sharp object,'' Lt-Col Kornwat said.
The husband was now in intensive care.
"We suspect she took both her weapon and her husband's penis because we cannot find the penis in their apartment. We even checked a toilet but she did not dump it there,'' Lt-Col Kornwat said.

Brassieres Disappear from Victoria's Secret (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080701/NEWS/80701009)
Fifty brassieres have been stolen from Victoria's Secret at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.
Des Moines police list no suspects in the undergarment theft, which occurred sometime between 10 a.m. Saturday and noon Monday.
The bras were various sizes and colors. Police listed an estimated value of $2,000.
Meanwhile, a store spokesman for Walgreens at 1330 E. University Ave. reported a bold theft of a toothbrush. A police report said a man entered the store about 5 p.m. and went straight to the aisle with electric toothbrushes.
He grabbed a toothbrush and ran out the door to a white car with a get-away driver. Other Walgreens stores in the area were notified in case the thief tried to return it for cash at another store, police said.
