View Full Version : "Shocker" hand gesture deemed offensive, disrespectful

Looks like some high school football players in Iowa are going to be suspended for using "the shocker" hand gesture in the team photo.
The gesture, involving the middle, index and pinky fingers, goes by various names including "the shocker" when the connotation is sexual in nature.
Cordes said that if athletes in past seasons had been using gestures that could be considered offensive, school administrators were unaware of it. If the administration had knowledge that the gestures could be considered offensive, it would have taken the appropriate steps, he said.
In explaining her decision to run the altered photo, Ann Wilson, general manager and co-owner of the Daily Times Herald, said Monday that the players' action "was disrespectful to the team, to us and to women, which means mothers, sisters and girlfriends."

That's actually not what "woman" means.
from dictionary.com:
the female human being
there was also this definition, which even the most hardened bonehead bigot should find a little offensive:
a female person who cleans house, cooks, etc.; housekeeper: The woman will be in to clean today.
So Ms. Wilson is wrong: this action was not offensive to sisters, mothers, and girlfriends. It was offensive to housekeepers.

Nyght, next time you see your own fans mocking our hand gesture, ask yourself (and answer honestly) this question:
Which fan base do you really think has the intention of using "the gesture" in an obscene manner?
We're innocent. It's all a matter of perception, as well as your own perverted "interpretation" of it.
A couple more questions to ponder.......
How many Shocker fans have been asked to leave a game because they were using an offensive hand signal?
Now how many Creighton fans were asked to either leave the Savvis Center (as it was called then) or tear up the "Rolan is a Felon" sign a few years ago?
I rest my case.

Here is where Shocker fans need to be careful, it has become an obscene gesture. Regardless of intent, it is well known what the hand gesture means and unfortunately, I think it will eventually be banned- even at Koch Arena. It doesn't matter what the Wichita fan base wants it to mean, prevailing culture has hijacked it. This is not unlike the Stars and Bars. The south loved to wave the confederate flag, and in reality, it had nothing to do with slavery. regardless of any innocent intent, the flag became synonmous with slavery and is now deemed by most of America as offensive. Just as the Confederate flag is now offensive, so is the shocker. It will have to go.

My two year old has a tendency to point with his middle finger. He has no intent of using "the gesture" in an obsene manner.
The difference is that my wife and I are trying to teach him to not point with that finger because it is not appropriate. Wichitans, on the other hand, know the Shocker has a negative connotation but take steps to teach it to their children nonetheless. Some would call that bad parenting....but blue collar is blue collar. :innocent:
BTW, I'm sure in Wichita its perfectly acceptable to refer to a riverboat as a Cleveland Steamer.

I believe Shocker fans were using the hand gesture long before it became popular and most WSU fans intend it to represent support for the Shocks rather than something Creighton gals seem to enjoy. How this all turns out is unclear and, just like the Bradley mascot, this may be under fire from the NCAA someday.

In the urban dictionary you can find the definition of the shocker. You can also find that a bear is a term for a hairy gay man. The Missouri State Fudgepackers has a ring to it that some can answer to. If it is convenient.

I'm not offended by the hand gesture itself, I just think people find it a little weird that there are small children at Koch or Scottrade flashing it. I would imagine, however, that not every WSU fan knows what it means.
By the way, I once had the shocker flashed at me by about half of WSU's cheerleading squad from their charter bus after the MSU-SIU game in St. Louis two years ago.

Please note, I don't find "the shocker" personally offensive. However, if someone is offended by it, then it becomes an offensive gesture. Pretty simple really. The original story was from a small high school in Iowa - people there were offended by it apparently.
Here's a question - what would happen if a WSU fan was asked to leave an opposing arena after making said gesture? Don't laugh, it could happen.

I already indicated that I was done with this discussion. And I already addressed your question a few posts earlier, JayPharmAlum. Not saying that it couldn't happen, it just hasn't happened yet.
I'd like fans of the league to turn their animosities outward.....to schools like Florida State, Illinois, North Dakota (Fighting Sioux, right?) and Notre Dame.
I left Bradley out for two reasons: 1. out of respect to a fellow conference member, and 2. The Brave mascot and its fans have already fought that battle.
Is there anyone out there who is offended by Spartans or Trojans? How about Rainbow Warriors?
A "hand gesture" is only one way a fan shows support for its school. Others besides the mascot itself are cheers such as "Let's Go Peay"......"Go 'Cocks," or bonfires in College Station, Texas that get out of hand and end up killing innocent students.
Can anyone think of other (arguably) misguided antics that haven't been mentioned in this thread?

In terms of logic, I suspect that even my children would agree that it is at best "impolite" and at worst "offensive" to make a gesture that could be construed as disrespectful. I didn't need a doctoral degree to figure that out, but I'm glad I have one so I can help to clarify things to simpletons.
As a side note, a second high school football team in Iowa (Harlan) suspended players for making the hand gesture in a team photograph. So please note two things: 1) it's probably not a great idea to teach your kids "the shocker" and 2) don't travel with the Shox to UNI or Drake.

Shocker (hand gesture)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Example of the Shocker. The shocker is a hand gesture with a sexual connotation. The ring finger and thumb are curled or bent down while the other fingers are extended. The index and middle fingers are kept together (touching) and the back of the hand faces outwards (away from the gesturer).[1]
[edit] Reference
The gesture refers to the act of inserting the index and middle fingers into a vagina and the pinky finger into the anus. Because of its explicit sexual connotation, the shocker is sometimes considered vulgar. Occasionally, the thumb may be positioned so that it may stimulate the clitoris. Mnemonic rhymes are used in order to remember its meaning, including "two in the pink, one in the stink" and "two in the goo, one in the poo". [1]
The shocker is generally referred to as being "given," "thrown up," "delivered," or "popped" rather than "shown", as with "the finger."

First of all I don't see anyone in your picture of the Shockers making the same gesture shown or described in your urban definition of the shocker.
All of the people in the picture doing the WSU shocker have their thumbs out, the urban defintion and picture have the thumb curled or bent down.
Second, if you want to use urban defintions of words, then some people might find the Missouri State BEARS offensive:
This definition of BEAR from the urban dictionary:
bear

The cougar sign, made by folding in the ring finger of the hand towards the palm, has several stories explaining its meaning. The true story of its origin, however, dates back to 1953, the first time UH played the University of Texas in football. Since this was their first meeting, members of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity in charge of taking care of Shasta I, the university's mascot, brought her to the game. During the trip, Shasta's front paw was caught in the car door and one toe was cut off. At the game, members of the opposing team discovered what had happened and began taunting UH players by holding up their hands with the ring finger bent, saying UH's mascot was an invalid and so were our players. Texas went on to win this game 28-7. UH students were very upset by this and began using the sign as notice that they would never let UT forget the incident. Fifteen years later, at their second meeting, the UH Cougars, proudly holding up the now adopted symbol of UH pride, fought Texas to a 20-20
UH did not play Texas again for eight years, our first year as members of the Southwest Conference. The Cougars were on a mission, and in front of 77,809 spectators (at that time the largest crowd ever in attendance at Memorial Stadium) slammed the lid on the disgrace Texas had attempted to put upon UH 23 years earlier. The final score was the University of Houston Cougars, 30, the Texas Longhorns, 0.

I've always wondered where the Shocker name came from. Now I know. Deep down, I guess I knew the origin all along. :innocent:

Please note, I don't find "the shocker" personally offensive. However, if someone is offended by it, then it becomes an offensive gesture. Pretty simple really. The original story was from a small high school in Iowa - people there were offended by it apparently.
Here's a question - what would happen if a WSU fan was asked to leave an opposing arena after making said gesture? Don't laugh, it could happen.
If you want to complain about the coarsening of America and you wish to use the hand gesture as an example, then fine.
To complain that some are offended seems weak to me. We spend way too much time with correctness in America. Way too much time.
Given the amount of time you have spent on this subject, you must be a liberal. Liberals, as you know, are the inventors of correctness, particularly political correctness. By gawd, we cannot offend anyone.

And then there is the lowest form of life - the extreme liberal lawyer. You know them. They are the ones convincing folks that they were offended by something so they can file suit against anyone and everyone associated with the contrived offense.
It is a disgrace when people go out of their way to be offended so they can raise a stink about it. This thread smacks of that practice.

Here's what offends me:
A president lying about having sex with an intern.
An NFL QB and his buddies lying about dog fighting and wishing everyone would just leave them alone to carry on with their federal crimes.
An NBA center pursuing a rap music career when he should be shooting free throws.
Very little else bothers me, so I don't know what you're talking about and neither do you.

This thread was so much more funny when we could just look at this picture and laugh.
