it's too bad, I he would have been a help at the point this year. I hope he is able to resolve what ever issues he is dealing with.

"Matt has a legal situation that he has to deal with," Jacobson said.

That doesn't sound good.

Half the puddy tats foot ball team has legal issues. You don't see them being released. How unfair.

That's the Iowa football team.

I applaud the coach's no nonsense approach. The David Moss issue at Indiana State hurt Waltman, Huggin's thugs wherever he is or has been, hurt him and now it appears Mike Davis @UAB and John Calipari @Memphis have problems with off-court discipline. I also believe in 2nd chances for some things but they better not be things that reflect long-range negativity on the university or the coach! A scholarship in this day & age is one heck of a financial investment & should be respected as such by all parties involved.

There's not much to applaud here. It just says he has a "legal situation." For all we know, this "legal situation" could prevent him from being a student, putting the decision to kick him off the team out of the coach's hands.

"according an Omaha police report, Culliver was arrested Aug. 4 on charges of possession of a firearm, flight to avoid arrest, unlawful transportation and criminal mischief.
According to the report, an officer was responding to a call regarding possible gunfire. When the officer arrived, a blue Oldsmobile Cutlass was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle fled police until crashing.
A search found shell casings on the car floor and an assault rifle in the front seat.
Another vehicle was found and the rear window was apparently struck by gunfire.
Culliver and another man were taken into custody"

That sounds like grounds for dismissal

That sounds like grounds for prison. I don't think he was going to be available to play for UNI whether he was on the team or not.

What a shame. The kid was a force at the Council Bluffs juco. And to think that prior to his knee injury I wanted him to go to CU...

He has definitely left the team but not sure how accurate the Register story is, I believe that Culliver was in Bangkok on August 4th unless they are talking about 2006.

I didn't think new recruits could travel with the team before school started. How could Culliver have been in Bangkok on Aug. 4?

I didn't think new recruits could travel with the team before school started. How could Culliver have been in Bangkok on Aug. 4?

Due to the nature of the event, representing the United States and not just traveling as a school trip, the NCAA waived the rule about players new to the school being able to travel/participate, with one caveat: If any new player participated in the Games, then UNI would not be able to redshirt them this year. Culliver and O'Rear both travelled with the team to Bangkok, but did not play due to injuries. Both were expected to contribute this year and were brought along to help with chemistry and so they could be in a preparation/practice, etc. Both would have likely played in Bangkok had it not been for injuries, one of the reasons Stout and McKowen were added to the roster for the Games.

Thanks for clearing that up. It sounds like UNI got a good deal on that trip.

For this situation to just now come to the attention of UNI, they (UNI) did not do their job as recruiters. Scouts and coaches ask questions about character and if their are any problems that exist with a player right to and through the player's committment. When the player signs the letter of intent, the good coaches double check one more time. That is done, if the coach is concerned about character.

I do not know the UNI coach, but someone there dropped the ball. I feel for Matt, though I do not know him personally nor could I even pick him out of on the street.

I hope he gets things taken care of within the law. What ever his consequence is, I hope is it reasonable and if he can play basketball somewhere again, good. If it prevents him, hopefully he has an education to fall back on.

I played against him in high school, and he is one of the funniest players to play against on the court. All he does is run his mouth the entire time, but not in a bad way. As for the trouble, he did come from a bad, bad neighborhood. Not a huge shocker there.
