View Full Version : Toure Murry 6'3" G 2008 Newest Shocker Commit

Didn't notice this posted anywhere but I read on Rivals where Murray committed on Monday during an in-home visit by the Shocker Coaches. Murray is a 6'3" 160lb combo guard from Klein Forest High School in Houston, TX. Mentioned he liked the Shockers offense, their fan base, and how much he likes the coaches.

He has grown about 4 inches in the last 6 months or so and it is hoped that he will maintain that pace for another few months.
His high school has produced more than its share of D1 talent recently, which has held down his stat sheet.

I think this is the same High School that incoming BU Freshman Anthony Thompson came from. I believe I read that he choose WSU over Bradley amoung others.

Somebody's been lying to this kid....
“What put them over the top was that they have a great fan base, good academics and I felt the coaching staff showed me love,” Murray said. “I respected them and trusted them. They have a great winning tradition. They go to the tournament almost every year and it’s a great conference.”
Ummmm.....since WSU has only made the NCAA tourney one time in this kids entire life,
1. Either someone flat out lied to the kid
- or -
2. When he used the word "tournament", he was referencing the Not Invited Tournament (NIT).
Either way, its pretty funny.:clap::banana:

I would bet that he's 7'3" by the time he enters college this time next year. What a weapon a seven foot point guard will be for the Shox.
BTW, how many scholarship players does WSU have right now?

All 13 are being used for this year. 3 will be available for '08 with the losses of Cooz, Braeuer and Thomasson.

I didn't post anything about this verbal because of the reactions (and snide remarks) on, for example, SalukiTalk:
Bigdawg68: Thought this was too good to pass up. WSU got a 2008 verbal Monday night. 6-3 shooting Guard Toure Murray out of Texas committed to the Shockers over Bradley, Fresno State and SMU.
The interesting part was that he listed as one of his reasons for going there was great academics. Then he was quoted as saying
“They have a great winning tradition. They go to the tournament almost every year . . . .”
Either someone as WSU is feeding him a line of huey and he isn't smart enough to figure it out; or he just isn't that smart. One year out of 20 they have made it to the tourney? He might want to look at that again. LOL.
I am sure WSU did not mislead him. What they probably told him was we go to the tourney every year. They just forgot to mention it was the MVC tourney.
AND
SalukiRD: Sounds like a bright kid... not.
If he's that ignorant he probably won't qualify academically anyway.
I am not certain what Toure Murry meant by his comments but SIU fans and DoubleJayAlum decided to make fun of this recruit and of WSU. Very classy of them; they are so smart they could coach CU or SIU by themselves. Of course, maybe they didn't understand Toure's meaning? Impossible, geniuses like DoubleJayAlum, SalukiRD and Bigdawg68 could not be wrong. Of course, I can make several guesses about the meaning of Toure's comments.
1. Gregg Marshall has taken teams to seven NCAA tourney appearances in the last nine years. That's a pretty good record and a player might wish to play for such a coach. If "they" means Gregg Marshall and his coaching staffs, then his statement is true.
2. WSU has been in postseason play (NIT or NCAA) for four of the last five years.
3. He might be predicting the future. As Xelpho said on SalukiTalk: Absolutely hilarious! Let's just hope this kid isn't Nostradomus though.

So the kid thinks he committed to Winthrop then? I guess that does make more sense.
I remember sitting at the bar watching Withrop on one of the big screens as they were playing at the same time Creighton was on in the NCAA tournament last year. Winthrop has a nice program - hopefully Marshall can get the Shox playing at Winthrop's level and they can make the NCAA tournament someday.

I'd like to question Xelpho (if he's man enough to come over to VT) why he hopes this kid isn't a good predictor of the future....
Is it because he just couldn't live with his own jealousy (assuming that Toure's "prediction" were to come true)?
Is it because he couldn't stand to see another conference member experience success (as WSU and Bradley both did in '05-'06) and help bring this conference the visibility it has today?
Is it because he couldn't stand one or two Shocker fans going over the top out here on VT?
Does he fear a repeat of what happened in the first 33% of the '06-'07 season (when a few of us Shocker fans got a little full of ourselves to varying degrees)?
Xelpho....come out and explain this to us.....if you're man enough.

Reread my post. I never made fun of the kid at all. In fact, I actually feel a little bit sorry for him because what he believes to be true about WSU simply isn't. Its no fun to be fooled.
2. WSU has been in postseason play (NIT or NCAA) for four of the last five years.
Once again, reread my post. I suggested that perhaps the NIT was what the recruit meant when he used the word "tournament." I guess its also possible that bigdawg68 was correct and the recruit meant the MVC tourney, which, by the way, every team gets to participate in nowadays.
Spin it any way you want, but Murry's statement is just plain funny to everyone (well, except for WSU fans).

Maybe you were the one who was fooled, DJA.
I'm not trying to post smack, because I know you weren't there.......and I know that I wasn't there.
You may spin your own interpretation and call this funny, or hilarious, or whatever. I can laugh along with you for that, knowing that you're just looking for an opportunity to have some fun at the expense of our program and VT / WSU fans.
But if his decision to commit was as much (or more) due to the coaching staff than the school itself, then he heard the truth. Coach Marshall and his staff have a good record of getting teams to the tourney.
It's all how you choose to interpret his comments. Fair enough?

The young man was obviously referencing the NCAA appearances in regards to coach Marshall who, by the way, has a better NCAA tournament appearance record over the last 9 years than any current coach in the MVC. Adding the fact that coach Marshall is now in charge of a program which is by all intents and purposes the "Class of its Conference" by way of tradition, fanbase, money, and overall community support; and realizing that his impressive record was achieved while heading up a program that was more like the "Drake" of its conference, backs up this young man's enthusiasm.
On a side note: it appears that the behavior displayed in this thread by representatives of our "little brother" up north and a few from our "illegitimate step-cousin" in Carbondale, that a vacuum, caused by my diminished participation is attempting to be filled. Let me assure those fine folks that the "machine" can be started back up at any moment giving them much more to worry about than the semantics of a new Shocker signee. :original:

MKR, Creighton owns wins over Louisville and Florida in the NCAA tournament in the last decade... losses to Maryland, Illinois, Auburn, Iowa, Central Michigan, West Virginia, and Nevada (maybe forgot someone).
I won't argue with WSU's one miracuolous run of efficiency, but long term consistency is heavily slanted one direction.

I think most MVC fans would take Creighton's underperforming on the big stage if they could reverse roles. It's much better than being on no stage at all.
I suspect if we did a "Team A vs Team B" like they do before selection Sunday, and asked basketball fans which has the better program, Creighton would be chosen over WSU every single time.

The Buffalo Bills of the early 1990's weren't known for their good football teams led by Kelly and Thomas. They were known as the losers who couldn't get the job done.

A WSU kid makes a dumb quote and its the media's fault. If a kid from Creighton, SIU, MSU, or Bradley makes a similar quote the source is treated as gospel by WSU fans. If there are positive quotes about WSU made by anybody, those quotes are always assumed to be accurate and in proper context by WSU posters. Don't you and other WSU posters have quotes appearing in your signatures? How can we be sure those people weren't misquoted or their statements taken out of context?
According to Coldblooded, WSU is the media darling of the MVC. If that's the case, why would any media source publish any quote that might make WSU appear in a bad light? :innocent:

You can compare things without being on the same level.
The whole point was that neither team could win when it mattered most - for an NFL team that being the Super Bowl, for a mid-major college basketball team that being an NCAA Tournament win or two.

Rafters? You can't see the rafters beecause they have this enormous, I mean just incredibly huge scoreboard that covers the entire rafters. It's gigantic! It's an 8-sided job with all the bells and whistles. Not one of those cheap, undersized 4-sided jobs. Oh wait, it was Indiana State fans that were bragging about getting a new scoreboard. Nevermind.

You made me think of a classic memory. 2006. Omaha. The WSU-Creighton game was on FSN and they zoomed in on the student section. A student waved around a sign that said, "WSU: Official Sponsor of the NIT". Pretty good stuff. That was funny, but even funnier was later that year CU was NIT-ing, while WSU was in the Sweet 16.
