Ely Out Approximately 8 Weeks
University of Evansville junior men’s basketball player Shy Ely (Indianapolis, Ind./Speedway) is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks after suffering a chipped bone in his left patella during a UE basketball camp on September 9.
An MRI on Monday confirmed the chipped bone in the patella, or kneecap as it is commonly referred to, for Ely. He is expected to miss the next eightw eeks of practice, but should return around the start of the regular season. Evansville will open up the 2007-08 regular season on Sunday, November 11 against Samford at Roberts Stadium.
“It is a tough break for Shy,” said UE head basketball coach Marty Simmons. “He has been doing a great job all summer, and even though this is a setback, we look forward to him being back in our lineup around the beginning of the regular season.”
Ely finished fifth on the team in scoring last season at 6.9 points per game in 31 contests, including four starts for the Purple Aces. He will enter this year as the team’s second-leading returning scorer behind fellow junior guard Jason Holsinger (11.5 ppg). Evansville will return eight letterwinners from last season’s 14-17 squad this winter under the direction of first-year UE head coach Marty Simmons.
