Julian Mavunga of Brownsburg (IN) is to make his college choice today. Sounds like he is high on the Sycamores. I have a good feeling about getting this kid. Here is an article from Sunday with a mention of him and the pick up game he played in with the Syc's.

BREAKING: Forward Doluony to join Sycamores

By Todd Golden
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State men's basketball team has secured its last recruit for the 2008-09 season.

Koang Doluony, a 6-foot-7, 175-pound forward originally from Sudan, has made a verbal commitment to join the Sycamores.

Doluony -- who played at Nebraska power Omaha Bryan High School -- missed two months of his junior season with partially torn PCL and MCL ligaments in his knee, but made waves with the Nebraska Bison Red AAU team, getting offers from Wisconsin-Green Bay, Youngstown State, Bowling Green and North Dakota. ISU was also competing with Nevada and IPFW for his services.

Doluony averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game during his injury-shortened season at Bryan.

Presuming all of ISU's other verbal commitments stick with their college decisions, Doluony fills the final scholarship available for the 2008-09 class. ISU has received commitments from Carl Richard Jr. and Tyler Cutter.

Congrats to the Sycs, but Bryan HS is not a "power".

{I realize the humor is lost on those of you not from Omaha, but I really thought it was hilarious. Its tantamount to saying "MVC power" Indiana St. :original:}

Oh don't you dare.... I don't want to get started on a rant about a former South Omaha Class B second team all stater. Comparing those two schools is like comparing Stanford and Wichita State :)

Not the teams, the buildings. They are side by side and I confuse the Catholic high school with the OPS high school. Football is easy, they share the same field.

Honest mistake; they are on the same hill and share a lot of the same facilities (football field, pool, etc.).

As an alum of the latter, I'd say it was head and shoulders better than the former. When I was in HS, Bryan was on ABC's Nightline because there were multiple suicides there in a short period of time. It became known as "suicide high" in teen slang.

JayPharm - did you attend one of those schools?

They seemed pretty powerful last year...as these were the last rankings that came out in March:

Boys rankings

Top 10/Class A
Record Prv.
1. Omaha Bryan 24-1 1
2. Om. Westside 19-6 3
3. Omaha Central 16-6 6
4. Bellevue West 16-9 8
5. Millard North 16-7 4
6. Norfolk 19-4 5
7. Lincoln NE 16-5 2
8. Om. Cre. Prep 15-8 9
9. Kearney 18-6 NR
10. Omaha Benson 15-9 10

They didn't suck when McGruder and the criminal who just got kicked off UNI's team were there either...maybe you were thinking of Benson?

The state championship for each of the last two years had the same match-up: Bellevue West vs. Central. Those are the basketball powerhouses in Omaha (and the state).

Bryan has a great coach in Tim Cannon who I knew once upon a time. It should be noted that the Bears did lose in the first round of the state tournament on a disputed last second basket.

Matt Culliver, formerly of the UNI Panthers, was also a Bryan grad.

Maybe it's just bad Karma. Maybe it wasn't screwed, it was meant to be. Maybe a team with the name Bears on it just gets screwed out of the post season. Maybe its just some strange supernatural thing. Maybe Missouri State should have changed their team name, not school name. Maybe.

I think you're onto something John. Only Missouri State is doubly screwed, they are the Bears and their coach is Bear-y Hinson.:bears:

I've never seen the kid play so I dont really know. But, as a whole, I am very skeptical of signing African players. Everyone gets enthralled with their athleticism and room for growth--but its not that simple.

I realize there are exceptions to the rule but Im not a big fan of signing a guy like this.

......"African players"?

I believe that I read in his bio that he has lived in the U.S. since the 4th grade.

Your logic seems to me to be F-A-U-L-T-Y!!!

So he's not African? I suppose it will be a while to see how this kid pans out in the MVC. If he ever averages 10ppg in this league then I will stand corrected.

What if he averages 10 ppg in the MAC? Would that change your mind?

Certainly, I will go to MACTALK.com and say as such. But didn't the dude verbal to the Sycs?

"Koang Doluony, a 6-foot-7, 175-pound forward originally from Sudan, has made a verbal commitment to join the Sycamores."

Is Sudan still in Africa or is it a suburb of Indianapolis?
