The only difference that I see is that Gonzaga had a national superstar in Adam Morrison which gave them more press. As far as team success it's SIU for sure. Besides that, the WCC is a puke conference next to the Valley. In a head to head matchup, SIU would smash those guys.

I don't get it. Is it still a rumor that Gameday's coming to Carbondale? I thought it was already a done deal.

SIU has established itself as a rich basketball program over the last decade, obviously the premier one of the Valley. However, as MSN mentioned, I don't think they've acquired Gonzaga status as the Salukis have been given less notoriety and haven't quite accomplished the same success - to a certain extent - as the Zags have. Now granted, it's easier for Gonzaga to get on the airwaves thanks to their west coast late night time slots, but still have managed primetime spots on ABC and CBS, unlike the Salukis. Gonzaga has been consistently a Top 25 team unlike SIU. The Zags have also held spots in the Top 10 and even Top 5 on numerous occasions. Gonzaga's parlayed that to No.2/3 seedings in the NCAA's while the Salukis highest has been a 4. Gonzaga, as mentioned by txsaluki, also has been to an elite 8 and several sweet 16's. It's close, but Gonzaga has had the more storied past and thus the better program IMO.

you know, having joined the board during the valley season last year, I missed all of the WSU hype that led into the season and the excessive bravado that so many WSU posts must have had during their glorious ride to #8.

By the time I got here, there were just whisperings ... words like "the abyss" were being thrown about and SIU fans seemed to have a special sense of smugness when dealing with WSU fans in particular. I questioned "why"?

Pomeroy has SIU's RPI the last three years at 7 (2007), 29 (2006) and 17(2005). Gonzaga was 60,10 and 10. A three year average has SIU ahead.

Gonzaga's center getting busted and suspended last year along hurt. It appears that the center will be reinstated this year. Maybe Gonzaga jumps SIU in these ratings this year.

We're gaining quickly, and Cold, haven't you heard Poshard got Carbondale to whore out $20 million for the needed arena renovations this year?
