What are the positive and negative reasons for
lodging at the Casino Queen?
Thanks.

The boat itself is kinda small. If you want to gamble while in town go to the Ameristar. CQ has the metrolink stop, therefore it is only few minutes to union station. Never actually stayed at the hotel though.
Sorry I can't be more insightful I don't go to St. Louis often enough.

I stayed there in August. It was ok. They have a free shuttle that will take you to the games, or there is the metrolink obviously. I was kinda disappointed overall with the place. For a brand new place, it seemed kinda cheap. The free continental breakfast basically amounts to putting pop tarts or frozen waffles into a toaster. There is a restaraunt in the Casino that probably serves breakfast, but I didn't go there in the morning. The only thing I really liked was the view. All the rooms face the Arch.

Big negative, IMO. Boat was a dirty mess filled with low class folks last MVC Tournament. I've never stayed in the rooms, but I imagine it is similar folks.
Gambling isn't good in STL area. I'd venture out to H*****ahs in St Charles for room and gambling if you desire.

stay at the $500m Lumiere Place, new Hotel and Casino on the St.Louis side, but i think its a 5star hotel so that might not be an option, it is due to open this year. http://www.lumiereplace.com/index.asp
its right by the Dome.

Thanks all.
I should have been more clear.
I am not interested in gambling on this trip.
The downtown hotels have really pushed their rates. As an example, CourtYards rack rate is $149/night. It was just a couple of years ago, the rate was $95. Same for the Hampton.
I can get an $89 rate at the Casino Queen, but when the rate is quite a bit lower than the market, there has to be a reason.
By the way, the Drury Inn at Union Station is booked up for 3/6-3/9 of 2008.

Anyone coming to STL for the Valley Tournament should be asking any hotel they visit for the MVC Discount or in some cases their alumni association discount.
SIU's Alumni Association gets rooms for $129/nightly for the 2008 MVC Tournament at the Hilton at the Ballpark (formally Marriott Pavillion).
The tourney is generating all kinds of $$'s for STL commerce. I remember the SIU Alumni Association rate being $89 a night a few years ago. Then $99,$109,etc.
If you're looking for less expensive, non downtown room rates, try out by ST Louis Lambert Airport. Or try Metro East area (Illinois side) the Collinsville exit is a decent area with room and restaurant choices. I believe it is mile marker 9 off of I55. That is a 15 minute drive to the arena formally known as Kiel. Metro Link (public transportation by train) goes out to Lambert or Casino Queen on the IL side. It does not go as far as Collinsville.

The Queen opened a new casino this summer, and it's (allegedly) much roomier and nicer. I haven't visited it, because Illinois law practically prevents their casinos from opening poker rooms.
As mentioned elsewhere, Pinnacle should have its Lumiere Place up and running by spring; it will take the place of the President, and should be a much nicer downtown option. Farther out along I-70, Harrah's in Maryland Heights and Ameristar in St. Chuck are the two biggest/best boats in the area.

I may check out the Queen's new arrangement Oct. 20th. Thinking of slinkin' into cdale for the SWOMS-WPST game and speeding over to STL to catch some NHL hockey. The night then likely ends at the Queen. I'll try and update the room situation.

If you are just looking for a place to crash the Queen is fine. The new one just opened up and is much nicer than the old. I believe the hotel is the same though.
Positive is easy access to the Metrolink with a stop right at the hotel as well as the Scott Trade Center. Negative is that it is on the east side.
Overall, if you just need a place to crash for a couple of hours a night it is an alright place to stay.
