No they lost their top player. Falker is returning this year sorry.
And how painful would that fall be ? As painful as say a fall from #8 to not even making the NIT ?

It looks to be a down year for the Missouri Valley Conference, but SIU doesn't have down years.
SIU hasnt had a down year. Maybe they havent gone as far as expected but down no.
As far as the first part of the quote I have this undeniable giddy feeling that GP as well as others will be proved wrong..

One was a leader, one was a scorer. Falker is a top 2 returning scorer yes.. sorry.
It'll be similar to that I think, especially since one SIU fan is already quoting Gary Parrish rankings in October in their signature. Add that to the fact that a lot of SIU fans are having Final Four aspirations in upcoming years.

The quote is not for the ranking it is for the comment following the ranking. I have communicated quite a bit with Gary and he is very genuine and seems to have a great deal of knowledge about CBB. I will trust his judgment for now.

I think that these pubs and articles only state one opinion and like :banana:everyone has one on their male body... Until the ball is tossed up for the first real game... exhibition do not count... everyone is an unknown... We all do not know how everyone is going to react to playing... we have a general idea but everyone is 0-0 in preseason and everyone has high hopes for their team....

Why are people flaming this?
This is good for the MVC. We should strive to have at least one school in the preseason media/polls every year. It shouldn't matter so much who the school is..... For the record, the same thing happened last year when Creighton was in these type of polls.
Whatever happened to the WSU fans who claimed they want the best for all MVC schools?

WSU was also given a lot of big national pub in November and December of last year. You weren't defending WSU then. In fact, the majority of people couldn't stand all of the attention. So now it happens to someone else and everything's fine and dandy?
Just remember. It may be good pub. But it's preseason October poll stuff. O-C-T-O-B-E-R.

CAUTION.....To all SIU fans...do not, I repeat, do not get prima donna disease....these ratings are great for pub and the Valley but overall they are completely meaningless...Losses to IU and or Butler, USC, Miss St or for that matter UT CHatanooga and it will all disappear in a hurry..As Syracuse was not North Carolina and LSU wasnt DUKE, neither are USC, MSU or IU. We win those games great, we lose, watch out....for years a lot of fans(mostly WSU) have predicted the demise of the Salukis...I would think we would have learned that the games are played on the court, not in preseason rankings or hyperbole.... We have a chance to be very good, but so do a lot of teams...We again have the target on our back which makes it even tougher...cant wait for the games to begin.

Are you still on that? Did you finally read the thread, or are you still going off just that thread title and what was explained to you about the thread? And 10 people out of ~1800 is not alot. 10 people out of the regular ST posters is not alot.
What's the big deal in people having hope for the near-distant future? It's 4 years before it even matters though right? Let it go man, because honestly its at least 2 years before this is good ammo for an argument/flamebait. You know, when these guys are actually at tSIU.

I don't think that is how it went down. I remember watching and wanting WSU to do well until they got into conference. I don't recall seeing a bunch of people saying, I hope WSU loses the rest of their games. No maybe after conference season that would be the case. If I remember right, most on here would agree good press for a valley school is good for the valley. This site seems to be quite the lovefest for the first month or a little more, while the non-conference is playing out, but once conference season begins, no holds are barred.
If there was disgust with WSU, perhaps it was the constant bragging and talking like you are the best team ever, I have yet to read that from SIU, and most SIU fans recognize they lost 2 really key parts, but also retain 3 starters, all of which can produce.

I still maintain that SIU lost its top 2 players.
Tatum was the scorer.....I can't recall the defender Tony Young. He was the defensive POY in the Valley in 2005-06, right? I think that Falker is overrated, and Young was more valuable at both ends of the court.
I think they will miss Tony's presence out on the perimeter. Maybe more than so than what Falker gives 'em inside.

Short-term memories on this board ... last year Parrish had WSU at No. 15, Creighton at No. 16 and SIU at No. 17 in his preseason poll. If I remember correctly, COLD led a Valley Talk circle jerk that day.
Now, SIU is the only Valley team ranked and it's undeserved? I don't get it.

Then there was the year that Southern lost their two best players in Williams and Dearman. Then there was the year that Southern lost their two best players in Brooks and Hairston. This year we have to find a way of replacing Tatum and Young. Not saying it will be easy but I do like the track record of the program.

See I love this kind of logic......WSU fans got all hot bothered because their TEAM made the sweet 16 and then climbed to #8 and crashed and burned. That's great...and congrats your TEAM had a good 1-1/2 years.
But while you were patting each other on the butts for your great TEAM, SIU was building a PROGRAM that has, can, and will continue to be able to absorb the losses of great players by replacing them with better ones. So instead of one team every 10 years thats good, we can have one every year.

Secondly, you obviously didn't get what I was trying to say. You used the world "our" in describing who takes in all the jinxes on here. It's not the rest of us. It wasn't so bad that you made the "bold" predictions as was your flat-out arrogance and assholic nature in doing it. If you want, I can re-post the quote and you can see how bad of an *** you made out of yourself. The fact that you said, and I summarize "LSU cannot be stopped and will not be stopped; Wisconsin cannot and will be stopped unless Tucker/Davis got injured" is what took the cake. Sometimes it's the way you say things and the way you said this stuff, you made it seem like God was your right-hand man.

Per USA Today write up
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
GETTING INSIDE
No Valley team is enjoying itself more than SIU.
The Salukis dominate the conference to the tune of five MVC regular-season titles in the past six seasons, six straight NCAA appearances and a Sweet 16 berth in 2007.
Everything went right over the summer. SIU opened its wallet to keep coach Chris Lowery for $750,000 a year. That quieted some doubters who didn't think SIU had that kind of cash. It does, and the commitment it made to Lowery might pay immense dividends.
Lowery's recruiting class is top notch. The university and city of Carbondale will work together on major renovations and improvements for athletic facilities. ESPN GameDay is expected to visit SIU for a game against Creighton (Jan. 26). Other MVC schools would kill for that string of hits.
None of it would be possible without Southern's calling card: defense. The Salukis play it like nobody else. This year should be no exception. Center Randal Falker and forward Matt Shaw are physical stoppers in the front court. Point guard Bryan Mullins makes other guards go where he wants because he is so strong and quick. Anybody else who wants to play for Lowery will work just as hard on defense.
SIU will miss guards Jamaal Tatum and Tony Young. Tatum carried the offense last season, when the plan often called for him to create with the shot clock running down. Young scored a little and defended a lot.
It's up to sophomore Josh Bone to help replace the lost scoring. Junior Wesley Clemmons is a good defender who also needs to score more.
Judging by history, SIU will score just enough to make its defense work quite well.
NOTES, QUOTES
STRENGTHS: SIU's man-to-man defense grows in reputation each season and it's deserved. Opponents fear the physical Salukis, especially in rowdy SIU Arena. Those two factors make SIU the team to beat. SIU will likely switch its offensive focus to its inside players, at least until the guards prove they can score consistently. Randal Falker and Matt Shaw can carry the load.
WEAKNESSES: Zone defenses bothered SIU last season. Chris Lowery wants to devote more time to offense this season in an effort to help his team score a little more easily. The bad shooting rap hasn't hurt SIU so far. This might be the season, especially if the guards aren't tough enough to maintain defensive intensity through shooting slumps.
LAST YEAR: 28-7 overall, 15-3 in the MVC; lost in third round of NCAA Tournament.
HEAD COACH: Chris Lowery (career 78-26); 4th year at Southern Illinois (78-26).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Bryan has the ability to run this ball club and still seek shots. He's already more vocal and he feels like this is his team." — coach Chris Lowery on guard Bryan Mullins.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
SCOUTING THE NEWCOMERS: Carlton Fay is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound freshman who averaged 22 points and 11.5 rebounds in high school. He is perhaps ready to contribute immediately off the bench. Brandon Wood is a good shooter, and SIU always needs those.
KEY EARLY-SEASON GAMES: No question that Indiana's visit to SIU Arena (Dec. 1) is the MVC's biggest nonconference game. SIU is in position to think about NCAA Tournament seeding in December. A win puts the Salukis back in the national spotlight. The only downer is that the game is relegated to ESPNU. SIU also plays Butler (Dec. 2Cool, two days before the Valley opener against Missouri State. Dangerous timing.
PROGRAM DIRECTION: Nothing seems to derail SIU. The program survived and prospered through coaches and star players leaving Carbondale. Lowery seems happy, and that bodes well for the future. The school is located in prime recruiting territory, a much-needed upgrade to SIU Arena is on the way and the Salukis should be on top of the MVC for years to come.
PROBABLE STARTING LINEUP: PG Bryan Mullins, SG Josh Bone, SG Wesley Clemmons, PF Matt Shaw and C Randal Falker.
ROSTER REPORT:
Sophomore guard Chris Cornelius sat out last season with a knee injury and hasn't played in two years. He redshirted as a freshman.
Junior forward Tony Boyle broke a bone in his right hand days before practice started. He is expected to return in early November.
SIU may have wrapped up the MVC's best recruiting class. Guard Torres Roundtree and forward Anthony Booker, both from St. Louis, are highly regarded.

Yep, that's it. I've given up.
The USA Today article, as you claim to be the "third national news service to run a story" about SIU actually has all the Valley teams listed, and most, if not all the NCAA Division 1 teams. Nice sugar coating, I guess..
As for the logo, I stand by what I said. It has to be one of the more "fruitier" logos of NCAA athletics. It begs for prissiness and heavenly angels. But since SIU appears to be on line for another celestial trip to the NCAA's and a Final Four/National Championship, I guess the logo fits.
For PR sake though, ditch the fairy god stuff.

who said anything about winning national titles?
The only thing SIU fans have said is we like the direction our program is growing, and the goal some day is to get to the final 4 and win a national title. No one is saying its going to happen this year, and if they are, they're crazy.
Heck, to be honest, it may never happen. But if our program continues to make the NCAA tourney as it has the past 6 years, and reach the sweet 16....what, we're not supposed to increase our expectations or goals?
Are we supposed to be satisfied with just making the dance over and over again only to be knocked out in the sweet 16? You adjust your expectations based on your past success, that's all SIU fans are doing. No one said THIS year was the year we take the next step though..no one.

Damn who pissed in your cheerios this week? You are on a one man mission to counter argue every SIU fan on this board. Frankly it’s looking kind of sad.
It reeks of bitterness and sour grapes for last years collapse of WSU and the drubbing some WSU fans took for all the lofty crap they spewed at the beginning of the year.
It appears, you are trying to make SIU fans look like they are building up their team to unreal levels of hype (which isn’t the case, most have been level headed and are optimistic, but realistic enough to realize that there are several roadblocks along the way) so that you can tear them down if they lose...so you can say "HAHA" like they did last year to you.
That hit it close enough to the mark?
Most of us are smart enough to see through this attempt at creating a perception of SIU fans that just isn’t there.

Funny how just one year ago we had many Shocker fans on here talking about how Creighton and SIU had peaked or regressed and how WSU was the only one who's program was moving forward and to the next level...Something that wasnt happening in Carbondale or Omaha....remember that....? Anyone........so now the WSU fans want to snipe a some SIU folks who have high hopes for their team and program...and one thing, at least as of today is true...for the past 6 years SIU has been without a doubt the program that achieved the most success and recogniton nationally...Contrary to COLD and all the other WSU assertions....now anyone with any sense knows that making it to the final four will take a lot of work, luck, etc..will SIU ever make it? Probably not, but maybe. However the same thing can be said for every other Valley school ....again, all that really matters is when the games are actually played...Some WSU fans have very short and selective memories...

It was you last year that said something to the effect of no Valley team will ever win a National Championship, much less go to a Final Four.
I don't think some SIU fans realize how dramatic a drop in overall offense the team has given up in the loss of Tatum. So to say that this year will be yet another cakewalk for SIU and having them go 16-2, 17-1, and so on (as some are predicting) is a little absurd maybe? Now I know those folks are, well at least hopefully are, in the minority.

There is a large difference between what SIU fans are doing and what WSU Fans did.
the main thing being SIU has 6 consecutive NCAA trips, 5 conf. titles, and 1 MVC tourney title to go with the praise and to back it up. WSU had only one.
Secondly, aside from dawgbit, we are just posting the articles and not really commenting on them until others chime in. No one ON THIS board has said SIU is going to the final 4 or national title, you pulled that from a pro-SIU saluki talk and inserted here.

So I guess you can agree to a certain extent that WSU fans were being backed up by 4 consecutive Saturday road wins, two of which were at Top 25 teams and a 9-0 start. If you're gonna play the SIU history back-up card, then WSU fans can claim the, yes short, but still nice history it had in November and December to use as their reason to why there was so much hype in here last year.. and thus some SIU fans shouldn't have been so pissy.

Just because the Shucks tanked last year it has nothing to do with any other team this year. The Media over hyped them after a couple of very nice wins. Those of us that looked at the situation intelligently knew that the Shucks had little to no inside game and were destined for a flame out. So far in this thread you have flamed on SIU and now your are starting on Creighton.
Lets do a little VT history lesson.
Shucks fans: We went to the sweet 16 and with our great coach and best facilities in the known universe it is just a start.

Get the picture ? You want to cry and whine about everybody else when it seems the majority of moronic predictions comes from your own fan base.
Nobody on this thread has predicted any final fours or even sweet 16 for SIU. It was just a thread about some props they are getting from one sports writer.

It was a really pretty impressive workout, but being the first time that the NCAA allowed the two of us to be together as a team this year, it wasn't as smooth as the tapes ($24.99) make it look. There were sloppy moments and occasionaly her ball handling wasn't all that crisp. The one thing I found out, she can handle my deep threat and is really good when I am posting up. Actually, it does. Why is not possible for SIU to tank this year? Because they're SIU and you're a fan of them?
I personally think SIU is being overhyped this year (mainly by a few of their fans) with the loss of some key contributors to a Sweet 16 team (a la WSU last year). I feel SIU has some inexperience at the guard spots this year and the offense will even be more of a premium. If teams know how to throw a little zone at the mighty Dawgs, then I think you could be in a little trouble..
I haven't "flamed" on SIU or CU. Just because I'm making the same points certain opposing fans made on WSU last year, doesn't mean I'm flaming. Check yourself.

Nobody on this thread has predicted any final fours or even sweet 16 for SIU. It was just a thread about some props they are getting from one sports writer.
Again, keywords being "this thread." I just think it's funny how a large majority of SIU fans were dogging WSU's success early last year and now a few SIU'ers are doing the same thing, but everything's hunky dory, right?
You are nothing but an amateur wanna be Cold. As I have said twice already your attempts are pathetic and I am surprised he has not shown up and tried to teach you how it's actually done.
It is not my lifelong goal to become Coldblooded. In fact, there's only about a 5% amount of the time that I actually agree with him on things.
The real fact of the matter is that SIU fans are more concerned with what he says than with SIU basketball itself. You guys have made him a household name, not me.
A little bit more thicker skin needs to be in order for a you and a few of your Carbondale elites.

The season may not have started but Dawgie's wife and I just enjoyed Midnight Madness. It was a two hour exhibition!
You want to talk about a hanging nut-ball, curveball, softball......well I got one too........
MVJ - You should have learned your lesson on this.
Don't over-rate yourself.......it's a long season and ratings don't mean **** right now.

You let all of Saluki Nation down. If they stumble in the basketball season, they are all going to blame you. I can hear the excuses now, coach Lowery saying things like, "I tried to keep the team focused and motivated, but when the players see the example set by the infamous SIU alumn Dawgiestyle just mailing it in, they think they can do the same. Tough to get guys to play tough when Dawgie rolls over."

Obviously, you have no idea what "at the time" means. You definitely weren't an English major, that's for sure.
I know what "at the time" means and my example still stands. Nebraska football was ranked in the top 20 earlier this year and AT THE TIME they were not one of the best 20 teams in the country. Michigan was ranked in the top 10 as well and they certainly weren't one of the ten best schools in the country AT THE TIME. It was early in the season and nobody knew how good or bad they were. Both schools were ranked based on past history, tradition and how pundits thought they would eventually perform. This is the exact same reason that the LSU and Syracuse teams were ranked AT THE TIME that they played WSU.
Frankly, this why early season polls are worthless and polls shouldn't start until at least half way through a sport's season.

I understand what you are trying to say. But based on what we knew AT THE TIME, WSU was deserving of their high ranking. And that was my whole point.
I tend to agree early season polls are, in fact, worthless. But that's how the system works. I know also for a fact that CU fans were just as excited about their Top 20 ranking early in the season as well and we know how they slipped out of the gate..

doublejay,
Why are people flaming this?
Because some WSU fans are insecure.
Because they are liars, green with envy, unable to overcome their fears of being left behind even tho a strong MVC is actually beneficial to WSU.
wsuballer,
It's amazing that you have to deflect arrows from non-partisan observers in this WSU/SIU debate from CU and now BU fans alike, and still don't get that you look like a sniveling, little whiner. Why don't you take the hint before fans from DU, UNI, EU, InSU, IlSU, and MSU also chime in. You're already a laughingstock among SIU, CU and BU fans, and apparently with some WSU fans. Congratulations--you're in rarified territory along with Cold.

Thanks for providing valuable insight and analysis to the discussion. Do ya now feel better getting your anti-WSU koodies off your chest?
I honestly think you're ripe with insecurity due in part to your "hit and run" posting approach. Maybe you should learn to dry it up and take constructive criticism like a man, you little twirp.

Me--insecure about what? That the Salukis have danced for six straight years? Surely you jest--frankly, there's nothing about WSU to make any SIU fan insecure.
As for my hit-and-run posting, it's probably because I have a life and a business to run. You might want to wean yourself away from the keyboard and donuts...
Taking constructive criticism from you? That's pretty funny, considering fans from other schools are laughing at you.

Insecure maybe because you won't let a dying thread die?
How many posts do ya have on Salukitalk? Will your fingers keep away from the keyboard when the season starts? Is it possible to be eating donuts and be on the computer at the same time? Pot meet kettle?
You seem obsessed over the interests of other fans about me. I don't see many laughing. You must be a good psychic.

uuum,
I post a lot on Salukitalk because well, let's see--perhaps I'm a Saluki fan? Why do you care so much? I can't say I've even read anything on ShockerNet. You go poking around on ST also? Gee, talk about inferiority complex...
I even took a couple months off from posting on ST last season because it was getting so busy, and there was too much to read. I took a couple years off from VT because of 'tards like you.
And yes, fans from CU, BU and SIU are laughing at you--read the posts. All you've been doing is defending yourself against them (in futility, I might add) when the numbers suggest there's no defense. You're a blowhard who doesn't get it, when it's clear for others to see. Disclaimer: I am no fan of CU or BU either, but it's clear to some of their fans also that you're a laughingstock.

So you can post a lot on Salukitalk because you're a Saluki fan, but I can't post a lot on Valleytalk, because I'm a Valley fan?.. :helpsmilie:
I poke around on all Valley fan sites (as does your BB DJA) to see what's going on with recruiting, scheduling, fan's thoughts, etc.. Is that not ok? Do I need your permission?
You took a couple months off of ST and still managed nearly 5000 posts? Maybe you're the one that needs to wean off the computer and donuts a bit..
Nice resort to name-calling again. Now I know I'm definitely getting into your head. Feed the fire...
You took "a couple years", more like months, off of VT because you couldn't stand a little bit of internet ripping.. Thicken up your skin, Nancy.
Once again, I reread the opposing fans' posts and again I see no laughter. Maybe you like to insinuate it. Maybe you want it. I don't know. I don't care. Why do you care so much about what other fans think about me? Do you really need other fan's approval to justify your feelings for me? I'm glad to know that you care what others think about me. I must rank high up there in the things you think about most during a day.. and that makes my day.. Thanks!

bballer (or so you say),
I'm done with you--it's all clear for everyone to see--fans from other schools (to include non-SIU fans) are annoyed by your drivel--I'll just leave it at that. You must have some serious personal issues.
I wasn't aware that I had crossed the 5,000 post threshold on ST (I haven't), and even if I had, realize that I was one of the first ones to join that forum after it was formed--which makes me a frequent poster, but not nearly as frequent as some of the ones that joined way after me. It doesn't matter, I'm damn proud to be a SalukiTalker, as it is comprised of one of the most knowledgeable sports fans around, with few petty posters like in VT (which isn't bad compared to other boards I would guess).
As for VT, yes, I did stay away for a couple years--not sure why that is so hard to comprehend. So while you blast me for being a nerd for being on one board, you admit to being a nerd on multiple boards. Congratulations: you're in the dork hall of fame.
Nice attempt at deflection: declaring we are obsessed with you. Dude, check the friggin' scoreboard. There is nothing to obsess or be envious of--you're just a bitter man following a program that enjoyed one brief year of success, and you can't take mediocrity anymore. For your sake, I hope Marshall is as good as advertised.

I'm a nerd for looking for information regarding VALLEY teams? I guess there are alotta nerds out there, including those at the most knowledgeable sports sites ever, ST, because they seem to talk a lot about the WSU boards, not that I care..
You ignored a lot of points I countered with you. Instead you revert to the ole' let's change the subject-"scoreboard"-you're mad cuz your team sucked last season and mine didn't- line. Love it..
I doubt you're really gonna be "out, biatch" (very macho and original I might add), but if you are... have a nice life, don't be so estrogeny, and learn how to listen to the other side, even if it doesn't always agree with your perfect views.
