View Full Version : Iowa State at Drake

Micky D brings the Clones to the Knapp Center. Big game for both squads. ISU has guard problems, injury problems and they're just plain ugly. Drake confidence growing but we really need the bench to put something in the box score except turn overs. Our guys were gassed at the end vs. the Dukes because we didn't get many minutes from the bench. What do you all think?

"Rebuilding or not, I don't think its too much to ask to win at least ONE out of the last six games against MVC opponents.
As I said in the now-defunct game thread, 6 straight losses to MVC teams should not EVER happen to a program like ISU in basketball. I don't care how good everyone says the MVC is.
I kind of chuckled when I saw the line on the game earlier today. Now I find that I chuckled for the opposite reason that I should have."

I got a kick out of these posts:
Didnt UNI beat a decent LSU a couple of years ago?
Response to the above post:
And your point is? LSU had a decent team that year, but they were without one of their main guys that game. It was early in the year...similar to when Drake beat our '99 team. After that win and the start UNI had...everyone thought they were going to dominate the Valley and they didn't even finish top 2. In fact, if memory serves me, they petered out badly late and finished something like 4th or 5th, but got into the NCAA because of their early season success.
"decent" = Final 4 team

I think it's really interesting how UNI fans call Iowa State a god awful team when the puddy tats just squeeked by them. Then I think it's really funny when UNI fans say they had an "elite" program. Duke is an elite program. North Carolina, Kansas and Texas have elite programs. Directional schools don't have elite programs. Iowa State should be better than they are. They have players, they just don't have guards...kind of like a directional school I know. They've got two big guys who can play, a forward who can play and a good guard who's injured. As I said before, they are not that bad. Last night we were very very good, feeling hot hot hot. Who knows about the next game. I'm not calling us champs, but I am enjoying every victory. This is the best start Drake's had since the late eighties. With any luck we'll be 9-1 on Dec. 14.

I'm not trying to gloat here.....but it really wasn't as close as the final score indicated. Drake already had a 30 point lead 3 minutes into the second half.
I was confident that Drake would win the game, but certainly never expected what I saw last night. I've never seen a McDermott-coached team look so flat, so lifeless. As an FYI, Wesley Johnson did play for ISU....he had half their points at halftime.

I'll say it again: Iowa State is NOT a good team. I don't care if we did just "squeak by them", maybe we should have beaten them by more, maybe we're just not that good this year. Time will tell. That said, a 35 point win over anybody is a good win, and like I said...you looked good doing it. I was probably cheering for Drake just as much as you were. Me calling Iowa State awful wasn't meant to be a jab at Drake, but apparently that's how you took it. Drake's going to beat the crap out of us this year IF both teams play like they did last night. Serious question:
Will Drake get a top-25 vote this week? I'm almost to the point where I'd say that they might.
That got me thinking: Why not? Drake is 6-1 right now. Their one loss was close and on the road to a good St Mary's team. Even though ISU is awful this year, beating them by 35 will raise some eyebrows. Even though the rpi is practically worthless right now, Drake's rpi is 17. Drake hosts a cupcake tournament this weekend, and should emerge from that 8-1. Drake isn't one of the 25 best teams in the country, but if a BCS-conference team had that resume, they'd probably be getting votes next week.
Mick Taylor

Drake's start is nice, but no one should pretend they're beating powerhouses. The only team with a winning record they've beaten is Duquesne, and if you look Duquesne's record up, their wins are almost entirely against the dreck of the earth. The win at Milwaukee was nice, but they're nowhere near where they were as a program a few years ago.
If anything, Drake's six-point loss at St. Mary's might be their most impressive performance.
Drake should enjoy it now, because winning at home is what every team should do. When they get in the Valley, the jury is still out. Drake might be Indiana State '05-'06 and '06-'07, version '07-'08.

True, Duquesne has beaten some bad teams, but they also hung with Pitt last night before finally going down by 5. They are a solid team, and Drake beat them despite playing an absolutely horrible second half. It impressed me that Drake was able to hang on and beat a decent team, even while playing far from their best basketball.
The win at Milwaukee was nice, but they're nowhere near where they were as a program a few years ago.
I don't think anybody will dispute that. The thing that was impressive to me about that game wasn't that Drake won, but the way they absolutely manhandled that team on their own court. It's not that UWM and Iowa State are powerhouses....far from it, but it's the way Drake is beating them that has some Drake fans pumped up.
This is a completely different Drake team than the last several years....it will be interesting to see what happens when opponents have them well scouted. I thought Iowa State's gameplan last night played right into Drake's hands, especially ISU's defensive gameplan.

I agree entirely with this. Drake is a different team from the past mainly because they have a different coach.
I think some people expected Keno to play exactly the same system as his father and maybe have exactly the same results. But he is not and they are not. Give teams a few more games of film on Drake to see some differences and I think you will see the adjustments being made.
I would expect Drake to get a fast start in Valley play, though I haven't looked to see who/where the play early. The real trick will be the second trip around the league once teams have seen them and even more tape is available.

Drake doesn't really have 'bigs'. Heemskerk and Cox (each 6-8) are the only 2 guys on the team taller than 6-6. Cox rebounds very well, runs the floor well, can drain the 3 (50% on the season) and can put the ball on the floor. Heemskerk isn't flashy at all, but he's very solid around the basket, knows how to position himself.
Drake's wings have been very good. Houston is 1st in the league in scoring, Young is 2nd. Houston is shooting 50% from 3-pt, Young 49%. But, neither one is strictly a shooter, both are very good at creating off the dribble. They can both hit the pull-up jumper or take it all the way to the hoop. Young's range extends out 4-5 feet beyond the 3-pt line, as does Klayton Korver's.

Yes, but none of the other new coaches came from within the system, having familiarity with all of the players and tehir strengths and weaknesses.
I never said Keno has completely abandoned the Doctor's styles, but he has modified them to fit his talent as well as made some adjustments.
For most coaches scouting Drake, looking at past style is a good starting point, but this team has different talent levels (and health-Korver) to go along with the modifications, so it will be hard to prepare for them, at least for the first time through the Valley.
The other new coaches are putting in new systems that opponents have to try and prepare for, but the players are also adjusting to the new system as well. The Valley will be an interesting place this year with all of the newness.
As for Drake doing better than the others, well, 365 days ago, Wichita State was doing quite 'well'. It's a long season.

Actually I've always felt that a new coach has a better chance of winning coach of the year because no body's ever seen his stuff. They've seen most of Keno...sure he tweaked the offense a little but the defense will look very similar with the exception that we're covering the shooters better. That, IMO has less to do with the scheme than it does with the players.

Right here watching Drake games....starting with Lewis Lloyds first year at Drake. Just in the last few years have I enjoyed being on the PC and hanging out in forums. I did not know about DrakeNation or ValleyTalk until last year. Don't worry, I'm not the kind of fan who will vanish with a loss. I love my 'Dogs win or lose. But they better freakin' win!:innocent:
Let's wait til conference season at least starts before we start crowning your unproven arses.. ... k?
Looking forward to it and agreed. We are going to win BIG games this year....and often.
Wow. I never thought I'd see the bandwagon DU fans come-a-callin' with their "smack" in my lifetime. Who woulda knew?
Let's just clear one thing up. I'm no bandwagon fan. I'm no sleeping fan when at the Knapp. I'm 44 and when possible, you can find me in the dogpound hangin' with the chicks.:naughty:
Leonard.....Josh...you dudes are STUDS!!!! Drake has arrived. Outsiders should fear.
What....I can't post a picture? Whats up with that? I had a great pic of Leo and Josh.....:cursing:

They must have played the game in their practice gym or a high school. That teeny barn is simply too small for the high-octane Bulldogs.

GRRRRREEEAATTT and WSU's first conference game is against Drake....I'm so excited.....:helpsmilie: I'm glad it's at least a home game for the Shox.
I am impressed by Drake so far. Valley play will be different I'm sure, but I definately didn't think they would be where they are right now.

The worst thing about this complete domination of the Clowns was that it killed our RPI. We dropped a couple spots to #17. And after next weeks killing of Iowa, we will drop even farther.
I am starting to think we should drop these weak Iowa teams and try to play better non-conference opponents.:lol::clap:

So after ISO fans run McDermott, will Missouri St be willing to offer him enough money to get him?

I don't know. $150,000 is probably too much for Missouri State to pay a coach. They have to pay for a baseball field thay don't fill and a new basketball arena. I look for them to fire Barry and hire the cotton candy salesman. They are still holding out hope for Buzz Peterson.

Duke has the same problem. It is not a problem.

Arg, you are just trying to drive me insane today man, I hardly even care that I'm 90% sure you were joking, in-state rivalries are great for the team, both in terms of the number of fans that it gets to the game, and in terms of recruiting, since we're guaranteed to have a game (maybe two if you count the cyclones) against people that our recruits have at least seen on national TV and to dominate them like we did is even better. It makes us at least look like we're not just another mid-major wannabe, anyway, grr, I just had to get that off my chest, since it really bugged me.
And beyond that, we're not always going to be doing better then Iowa and ISU, but it does look like we'll be a lot more competitive for at least a while, and because Iowa and ISU fans can't understand that, both of those programs will be looking to cut us out of their schedules and will be looking for any proof/evidence of support from the Drake/UNI side of things that it would be a good idea, so please don't give them any.

Lighten up, I'm all about Drake.
You're all about Maid-Rite, ya chucklehead.
Prack.
As a newly minted Drake fan, are you going to try to make it to a game at the Knapp Center this year? The West End Lounge has better food (a vending machine) than Maid-Rite.
Tmmroy....welcome to ValleyTalk....always good to have more Drake fans.....you might also want to check out Drakenation (http://www.drakenation.com)

Coming to a Drake game this year, you can take it to the bank! Sneaking in some Maid Rite, a bucket of George's chili and a pack of Twizzlers. Hope the beer at the West End is COLD, got some chili to wash down!!!!
Oh yeah, righnt back at you you big ******bag.

The beer is always cold (and cheap) at the West End....and McBulldog has a seat reserved for him at the end of the bar. I'd probably stay away from the bathroom....but with a bucket of George's chili, well......
And, if you stay there late enough after a game, the place will be full of drunk college girls. :innocent:

If you are going to visit Drakenation, you are going to have work the words "prack" and "shat" into your posts a lot more often. Of all the Valley boards, that one is by far the most entertaining to read.
Maybe when I get bored, I should start a thread breaking down all of the Valley sites.... It might be interesting to see everybody's thoughts...

I understand that they use prack and shat on Drake nation, but do they use fack? Like "That is one quick facker." That Facker has some ups!" I think I've also seen it used with the word mother preceeding it.

Erg, that may be tricky, I always try to at least pretend to know proper English on forums, breaking the habit might be a little too much for me,
