If this game gets out of hand at all, there may be an attempt to stop the flapping the "unflappable" Hawk..Billy Bluejay will utilize some "SIU-style" defense and hand check the unflappable hawk...

Also, if you'd like to watch this game for free (televised today on Nebraska public television):

http://www.netnebraska.org/television

Unflappable Hawk to make an appearance

Saint Joseph's will be accompanied to Omaha by its Hawk mascot, which has not missed a game, home or away, since it was originated during the 1954-55 season.

The mascot is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game, representing the school's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." A few years ago, ESPN used a "flap-o-meter" on a national broadcast of a Saint Joseph's game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game.

Jim Brennan, an ex-Marine, was the first Hawk and served as the mascot for three years. Jim Miller is in his second season as the current Hawk and is the 30th student to wear the wings.

Pretty sloppy play for the last couple minutes. I do like Creighton's aggressiveness driving the ball, even though a couple times was a little out of control.

Creighton having a hard time figuring out how to score against their zone. Some good ideas from some young guys, but once they drive and get in trouble they don't know what to do with it and have forced some shots.

Creighton needs to figure out how to play against the zone. Also needs to cut down on turnovers IMO. Knowing Dana he'll get everything taken care of at halftime and Creighton will go on to win by 50 points LOL.

Any normal person knows why WSU lost the game Friday night and it wasn't because of the refs or the final play. Selecting a few posters from SN really doesn't prove or mean anything.

I dunno why you're trying to turn a CU game thread into a thread about WSU's game Friday night.

If you wanna go ahead and ignore the original question regarding today's officiating, go ahead.

You look less obsessive when you at least keep the talk about WSU and its tendencies off of a CU thread.

What a strange game. Our newbies who have been playing well all stunk it up tonight and then the seniors who outside of Watts haven't done anything light it up. I feel very fortunate to have that W. St. Joe's is pretty good even with their mediocre record.

Very happy that this team passed its first test in a close game - all others have been double digits for or against. St. Joe's on the other hand is not getting it done with OT loses to CU and Gonzaga and a 5 point loss at Syracuse. Martelli is a good coach but I'll keep my Sooie Pig thank you very much. :innocent:

Those 5 pts were pretty damn big, a 3 in a guy's face and an acrobatic lay-up during a run that put us in the lead.

MoValley John

I don't think anyone was hoping that Creighton lost. Even Dawg was pulling for the Bluejays. Being critical of Stinnet is fine, he had an off night. He did score his points when it mattered, but if he had contributed earlier in the game, it might not have gone into overtime.

That said, he is a freshman and freshmen are going to be inconsistent. Creighton got the win and it's a good omen to know that if the youth is struggling, you still can put the game in the hands of a your seniors.

Hahahahahahaaa.. I think that's what you hope I'm thinking. I think there's a fair share of BJ fans out there that think the same way, with the teams reversed of course. I just like joshing things up a little just to make sure CU fans know this WSU fan isn't just gonna "take it" when some CU fans go chiming in on WSU threads, notably Mr. Brownnoser, DJA.

That was clearly a little jab at UNI fans. Last year, about two or three weeks into conference play, a UNI fan posted that they were driving the bus. Until the last week of conference play, I bet the bus is still at the station.

Jays 6-1 after the first seven games.

I thought if CU came out of the first 7 games with a 4-3 record I would be optimistic.

They've got some issues to work out, like every team in the Valley (except your 2008 Champs, the Drake University Bulldogs:clap:).

Jays will be 9-1 (and if they lose any of the next three, well, they can kiss any at-large chance down the drain) heading into their opening MVC game with Illinois State.

WSUballer: Before the game, P'Allen granted his immortality to the Great and Wise Hibma. Thus, he was indeed mortal for this game.

The hawk was unflappable. It was interesting. (In fact for the first 32 minutes of the game, the crowd was more fascinated with the Hawk than the game).

Even during the National Anthem. One hand on the heart, one flapping. Can you say rotator cuff surgery?

Qwiet Center for 32 minutes.
Qwest Center, an actual home court advantage for 13 minutes.

A win is a win. It's going to be a mess this year in the Valley season.

Also, a nice moment of silence for the victims of the Westroads Shooting before the game.

The new guys certainly had some struggles tonight. Thankfully, our seniors decided to step up. Hibma and Bahe played out of their minds.

The biggest enigma to me was Dotzler. Those 3 turnovers on back-to-back-to-back possessions down the stretch almost cost them the game. Very disappointing for such a veteran player.

The guys stepped up and played very well in OT. Hopefully a learning experience for the new guys.

The Jays have had a different player step up each big game (except for Xavier). First, Stinnett, then Watts, then Witter and today Hibma/Bahe. The team is very unselfish and has a lot of options.

This was a really odd game today and I felt it was going to be that way from the outset. Just a weird vibe in the arena.

The game was poorly played (and frankly, not well officiated). Student section was sparse. Crowd was reserved until the 8:00 minute mark of the 2nd half, but for a short while it was electric and clearly played a role in the outcome of the game.

Watts, Bahe, and Hibma were awesome and clearly led the team. Josh, Cavel, and P' were not at their best.

Anyway, a win is a win and I am happy at 6-1. That being said, I can't say for sure that the Jays have many great wins and I'm not about to crown their ***. I suppose we'll see what DePaul, Nebraska, and St Joes are in a couple of months.

MVJ, don't know if you were at the game, but the foregoing statement is simply not accurate. First, Josh had 10 assists, never a bad outing. Second, At least half of the turnovers though charged to Josh are really on his teammates. He got stripped from behind with teammates failing to communicate to him that a defender was coming from behind. A couple of turnovers resulted when guys freelanced, changing direction after Josh was already passing the ball instead of continuing through with the set offense (P'Allen did it to him twice) . Those are the things you don't see on TV. That's what happens when you have a lot of new guys in there still learning to play with each other and the offense.

He also played solid defense and had a couple of steals to go with 5 boards.
Josh did have a few lapses as did most of the others on the floor at one time or other, but consider he played 32 minutes with the bulk of the ball handling duties against a pretty aggressive St. Joe's defense - to say he stunk up the place just isn't true.

We'll agree to disagree. Many of the instances you note are times where I would still lay the blame on him for holding the ball too long. Altman's offense works by passing the ball quickly, not by dribbling incessently.

Josh got stripped from behind because he dribbled too much when he should have passed to a wide open Bahe in the corner for a 3-ball. At least one of times where you are blaming Stinnet, Josh got into his own trouble by first dribbling without moving the ball anywhere for a few seconds and then picking up the dribble without anyone to pass to.

There were also a few times where the turnover probably should've been charged to him but wasn't, because he threw up an errant pass and then another Jay took an offensive foul during the scramble for the loose ball. And several times he drove to the lane and then got stuck in mid air halfway between a shot and a pass.

He may not have stunk up the place, but he did not have a good game, either. As Perrault said, he probably had about a 'C' type game. Unfortunately, Witter didn't have a good game either.

Agree to disagree it is. The foul thing is BS, as well as the statement he was responsible for other turnovers not charged to him. Not a single time did a player pick up an offensive foul in a scramble for a loose ball caused by Josh. I didn't think, nor did I say it was Josh's best effort. On the other hand, St. Joe's played a very physical pressing/trapping defense on the perimeter and did an excellent job of disrupting passing lanes as well as bumping the guys around trying to cut through the lanes. When you are the guy with the ball in your hands most of the time, you are going to get the brunt of that kind of defense. They were also bigger. Did you notice Josh gave up 3 to 5 inches to his defender most of the time? So, to the extent you think he dribbled too much, (I disagree) chalk it up partly to great defense by St. Joe's and our young guys not getting in position to receive passes when they are supposed to get there.

Josh did have some lapses, and he certainly has had games where he did a better job of taking care of the ball. My point is to say he stunk up the place when he had 10 assists, a couple of steals and played well defensively was a really narrow-minded analysis of his game.
